RELIABILITY-BASED DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF AN AUTOMOTIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM FOR ENHANCING KINEMATIC AND COMPLIANCE CHARACTERISTICS

  • This study introduces the Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) to enhance the kinematic and compliance (K & C) characteristics of automotive suspension system. In previous studies, the deterministic optimization has been performed to enhance the K & C characteristics. Unfortunately, uncertainties in the real world have not been considered in the deterministic optimization. In the design of suspension system, design variables with the uncertainties, such as the bushing stiffness, have a great influence on the variation of the suspension performances. There is a need to quantify these uncertainties and to apply the RBDO to obtain the design, satisfying the target reliability level. In this research, design variables including uncertainties are dealt as random variables and reliability of the suspension performances, which are related the K & C characteristics, are quantified and the RBDO is performed. The RBD-optimum is compared with the deterministic optimum to verify the enhancement in reliability. Thus, the reliability of the suspension performances is estimated and the RBD-optimum, satisfying the target reliability level, is determined.

  • The computer-based simulation tools are currently used overwhelmingly to simulate the performance of automotive designs. Then, the search for an optimal solution that satisfies a number of performance requirements usually involves numerous iterations among several simulation tools. Therefore, meta-modeling techniques are becoming widely used to build approximations of computationally expensive computer analysis tools. The set-based approach proposed in the first report of a four-part paper has been a test bed for the innovation of vehicle structure design process in the Structural Design and Fabrication Committee of JSAE(Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan). In the second report, the proposed design approach is illustrated with a side-door impact beam design example using meta-modeling techniques.

  • 기존의 자동차 개발은 주로 정확성(Correctness) 및 안전성(Safety) 확보에 초점을 맞추어 왔으며, 이에 반해 보안성(Security)은 비교적 소홀하게 다루어져 왔다. 하지만 최근 자동차의 인터넷 연결성이 높아짐에 따라 자동차 해킹 사례가 증가하면서, 유엔유럽경제위원회(United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, UNECE)와 같은 국제기관은 자동차 개발에 대한 보안성을 확보하기 위해 사이버보안 규제를 준비하고 있다. 다른 IT 제품과 마찬가지로 자동차 사이버보안 규제에서 또한 개발 초기부터 보안성을 고려하는 "보안 내재화(Security by Design)"의 개념을 강조한다. 특히 자동차 개발은 생명주기가 길고 공급망이 복잡하기 때문에 개발 이후에 아키텍처를 변경하는 것이 매우 어려우므로, 자동차 개발에 있어 보안 내재화는 기존 IT 제품에 비해 훨씬 더 중요시된다. 그러나 문제는 아직 자동차 개발 과정에 보안을 내재화하는 구체적인 방법론이 제시되지 못하고 있다는 것이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 자동차 보안 내재화를 위한 구체적인 방법론을 제안한다. 본 논문에서 제안된 방법론을 통해 자동차 제조사는 자동차 개발 과정에 있어 기능 안전성과 보안성의 측면을 동시에 고려할 수 있으며, 다가오는 UNECE 자동차 사이버보안 규제에 대한 인증에도 대응할 수 있을 것이다.

자동차 엔진 밸브트레인의 타음감소를 위한 캠 형상 설계 (Cam Profile Design for Impulsive Noise Reduction of Automotive Engine Valve Train)

  • Valve train is one of the important noise sources in idling engines. Valve train noise comes mostly from two different impacts. One is the impact between cam and tappet at the beginning of the valve open period, which is an important source of impulsive noise of valve trains. The other is the impact between valve and valve seat at the closing of the valve open period. In case of mechanical lash adjusters, it is very difficult to control the initial impact. In this paper, we designed various types of cam profiles, especially in the opening ramp design, and investigated the effect of cam profiles on the magnitude of the initial impact. The effects that some cam design parameters have on the impulsive noise are also observed.

  • Hybrid electric vehicles have applied electric parts for saving fuel consumption and reducing levels of environmental pollution. Electrification of automobiles is indispensable for entering into global market because of enhanced environment restriction. ISG (Integrated Starter & Generator) system is one of main electric parts and can improve fuel efficiency more than other components by using Idle Stop & Go function and regenerative braking system. However, if ISG motor and inverter work under the continuously high load condition, it will make them the decrease of performance and durability. So the ISG motor and inverter need to properly design the cooling system of them. In this study, we suggested the enhancement points by modifying the thermal design of ISG motor and then confirmed the improvement of the cooling performance.

  • This paper deals with the design process for an outer-rotor-type surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) used in continuous variable valve timing (CVVT) systems in automobiles with internal combustion engines. When the same size, outer-rotor-type SPMSMs generate larger torque and more stable than inner-rotor-type SPMSMs. For the initial design, space harmonic analysis (SHA) is used. In order to minimize the cogging torque, an optimization was conducted using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). At the end of the paper, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is performed to verify the performance of the optimum model.

  • More and more many people show a keen interest in the ergonomics application car. One of the recent trends of cockpit development is to integrate fore part of whole cockpit and compartment. The goal of this study is to develop and Analysis of User's Convenience a cockpit prototype based on the design guide of cockpit integration module. The process of this study has been followed analyzing development trend of next generation Automotive cockpit, extracting the design factor needed to making integration module and laying down the design guide of cockpit integration module. Finally, this study is indicate an instance that evaluation of utilization with Integrated Automotive Cockpit Module System.

경량 연료전지 차체프레임 설계 프로세스 (Design Process of Light-weighted Fuel Cell Vehicle Body Frame)

  • This paper presents a design process of light-weighted fuel cell vehicle (FCV) frame to meet design target of natural frequency in early design stage. At first, using validated FE model for the current design, thickness optimization was carried out. Next. optimization process, comprised of beam model size optimization, shell model design and shell model thickness optimization, was investigated for two frame types. In addition, in order to ensure hydrogen tanks safety against rear impact load, structural collapse characteristics was estimated for the rear frame model finally produced from the previous optimization process and, with the target of equal collapse characteristics to the current design model, structural modification with small weight increase was studied through static structural collapse analyses. The same attempt was applied to the front side frame. The results explain that the proposed process enables to design light-weighted frames with high structural performance in early stage.

크랭크샤프트 강건 설계 (Robust Design of Crankshaft)

  • Finite element analysis along with DOE scheme has been performed to obtain robust design of crankshaft assembly. This study focused on obtaining optimized fillet radius of crankshaft mainly by statistical approach. 27 design cases using 3 factors with 3 levels are constructed by design of experiment. Changes of design factors and noise factor may influence the durability of crankshaft system. General two stages of robust design may enhance the durability of crankshaft model. Increasing crank arm thickness was adopted as a shrink step and change of fillet radius was used as a shift step. By combining these two steps, the stress concentration at the fillet area is reduced and adequate fillet radius is determined for the robust design of crankshaft.

  • A V belt pulley is widely used in automotive industry. More than tow pulleys in one automobile are used, such items as crankshaft, water pump, air-con compressor and power steering pump. Although the shape and usage of pulleys are very simple, the design evaluation of a pulley design is difficult because the load conditions and the installation environment are complicated. So, we formulated the design evaluation for the V belt pulley by using CAE system, which enables to develop a design automation system. By using this system, an engineer can evaluate a pulley design easily without any painstaking effort, such as consideration of the complicated loads and CAE activities. Also the system helps to accumulate the design experience of a company, which guides the optimum design based on experience.
