The full results of troubleshooting process related to the flight control system of a tilt-rotor type UAV in the flight tests are described. Flight tests were conducted in helicopter, conversion, and airplane modes. The vehicle was flown using automatic functions, which include speed-hold, altitude-hold, heading-hold, guidance modes, as well as automatic take-off and landing. Many unexpected problems occurred during the envelope expansion tests which were mostly under those automatic functions. The anomalies in helicopter mode include vortex ring state (VRS), long delay in the automatic take-off, and the initial overshoot in the automatic landing. In contrast, the anomalies in conversion mode are untrimmed AOS oscillation and the calibration errors of the air data sensors. The problems of low damping in rotor speed and roll rate responses are found in airplane mode. Once all of the known problems had been solved, the vehicle in airplane mode gradually reached the maximum design speed of 440km/h at the operation altitude of 3km. This paper also presents a comprehensive detailing of the control systems of the tilt-rotor unmanned air vehicle (UAV).

This paper presents a ground altitude determination algorithm using a laser altimeter and GPS for automatic take-off and landing of UAV. The characteristics of the laser altimeter was analyzed in ground tests and a low-pass filter was designed to reduce the effect of signal interruption due to reflectivity problem. The paper shows that a single sensor cannot measure ground altitude appropriately in terms of reliability and accuracy. To complement shortcomings of the laser altimeter, the linear Kalman filter was designed using DGPS vertical speed. Designed filter was validated and tuned through the steps of simulation, ground test and flight test. It was confirmed that the accuracy for automatic landing is achievable.
As helicopter technology has been upgraded, today its oceanic operation is considered to be usual. In oceanic operation of helicopter, the effect of severe wind, wave, and corrosion must be investigated and the operation procedures for safety as well as the motion of shipboard arising from maneuvers of ship must also be considered. In this paper, it describes the result of trade-off study for shipboard landing and its operation procedure including dynamic interface between ship and aircraft in ship operation and gives a simulation results to implement the oceanic operation of tilt rotor aircraft.

This paper presents the guidance and control design for automatic carrier landing of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). Differently from automatic landing on a runway on the ground, the motion of a carrier deck is not fixed and affected by external factors such as ship movement and sea state. For this reason, robust guidance/control law is required for safe shipboard landing by taking the relative geometry between the UAV and the carrier deck into account. In this work, linear quadratic optimal controller and longitudinal/lateral trajectory tracking guidance algorithm are developed based on a linear UAV model. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme and guidance law for the carrier landing are verified via numerical simulations using X-Plane and Matlab/simulink.

Reducing aircraft speed is the important task in the Rejected Takeoff and/or landing process. It is known that the effect of the Speedbrake is most important factor during the rejected takeoff maneuver in particular near V1 on the critical field length runway. The B747 designer created Automatic Speedbrake Control System to relieve pilot workload, improves brake operation and ensures proper Speedbrake operation for rejected take off. However, those who make the Rejected Takeoff procedure ignored the Automatic function and made it does all manual operations. This lets procedures difficult, complicated, and a cause of confusion and pilot error. This study was conducted to commentary the mechanism and function of the Automatic Speedbrake Control System of B747-8 and to propose appropriate B747-8 Rejected Take off procedures for its function to reduce the workload of pilots and contribute to reduce the possibility of pilot error during Rejected Takeoff.

Unmanned drone stations for automatic charging have been developed in order to overcome the flying time limitation of rotary wing drones. Since the drone stations is an unmanned operating system, each of the drones will be required to have a high degree of landing accuracy. Drone precision landing has been mainly studied depended on image processing technologies, but the image processing systems make several problems, such as the mission weight, the drone cost, and the development complexity increases, and the flight time decrease. Thus, this paper researched accuracy of precision landing based on RTK (real time kinetics) for rotary wing drones. For the experiments of RTK based precision landing, a drone repeatedly performed three missions. The survey accuracies of the RTK about missions respectively were set as 0.3, 0.2, and 0.1 meters. Each mission has one take-off point, two way-points and one landing-point, and was repeated ten times. The experiment results revealed landing error distance means of around 0.258, 0.12 and 0.057 meters on each of RTK setting.

This paper presents a tracking filter of radar beacon system (RBS) for automatic takeoff and landing of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The proposed tracking filter is designed as the decoupled tracking filter to reduce the computational burden. Also, an adaptive estimation method of the measurement error covariance is proposed to provide an improved tracking performance compared to the conventional decoupled tracking filter whenever the accuracy of RBS observations is degraded. 100 times Monte Carlo runs performed to analyze the performance of the proposed tracking filter in case of normal operation and degraded operations, respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed tracking filter provides the improved tracking accuracy in comparison with the conventional decoupled tracking filter.

The results of control law design for a tilt-rotor unmanned aerial vehicle that has a nacelle mounted wing extension (WE) are presented in this paper. It consists of a control surface mixer, stability and control augmentation system (SCAS), hold mode for altitude / speed / heading, and a guidance mode for preprogram and point navigation which includes automatic take-off and landing. The conversion corridor and the control moments derivatives between the original tilt-rotor and its variant of the nacelle mounted WE were compared to show the effectiveness of the WE. The nacelle conversion of the original tilt-rotor starts when the airspeed is greater than 30 km/h but its WE variant starts at 0 km/h in order to reduce the drag caused by the high incidence angle of the WE. The stability margins of the inner loop are presented with the optimization approach. The outer loops for the hold mode are designed with trial and error methods with linear and nonlinear simulation. The main control parameter for altitude control of the helicopter mode is thrust command and it is transferred to the pitch attitude command in airplane mode. Otherwise, the control parameter for the speed of the helicopter mode is the pitch attitude command and it is transferred to the thrust command in airplane mode. Therefore the speed and altitude hold mode are coupled to each other and are engaged at the same time when an internal pilot engages any of the altitude or speed hold modes. The nonlinear simulation results of the guidance control for the preprogrammed mode and point navigation are also presented including automatic take-off and landing in order to prove the full control law.
This purpose of this paper was to review the development trend of the VTOL MAVs with a ducted propellant that can fly like the VTOL at intermediate and high speeds, hovering, landing, and lifting off vertically over urban areas, warships, bridges, and mountainous terrains. The MAV differs in flight characteristics from helicopters and fixed wings in many respects. In addition to enhancing thrust, the duct protects personnel from accidental contact with the spinning rotor. The purpose of the U.S. Army FCS and DARPA's OAV program is spurring development of a the VTOL ducted MAV. Today's MAVs are equipped with video/infrared cameras to hover-and-stare at enemies hidden behind forests and hills for approximately one hour surveillance and reconnaissance. Class-I is a VTOL ducted MAV developed in size and weight that individual soldiers can store in their backpacks. Class-II is the development of an organic VTOL ducted fan MAV with twice the operating time and a wider range of flight than Class-I. MAVs will need to develop to perch-and-stare technology for lengthy operation on the current hover-and-stare. The near future OAV's concept is to expand its mission capability and efficiency with a joint operation that automatically lifts-off, lands, refuels, and recharges on the vehicle's landing pad while the manned-unmanned ground vehicle is in operation. A ducted MAV needs the development of highly accurate relative position technology using low cost and small GPS for automatic lift-off and landing on the landing pad. There is also a need to develop a common command and control architecture that enables the cooperative operation of organisms between a VTOL ducted MAV and a manned-unmanned ground vehicle.
