Storage Capacity Estimation for Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems Considering Material Handling Delay (자재취급 지연을 고려한 자동창고의 저장능력 추정)

  • Considering material handling delay which occurs between storage and processing stations, we propose an algorithm to estimate the required storage capacity, i.e., number of aisles and number of openings in vertical and horizontal directions in each aisle, of an automated storage/retrieval(AS/R) system. Due to the random nature of storage and retrieval requests, proportion of single and dual commands is not known in advance. Two design criteria, maximum permissible overflow probability and maximum allowable storage/retrieval(S/R) machine utilization, are used to compute the storage capacity. Most of studies assume that storage capacity of AS/R systems is given, although it is a very important decision variable in the design phase. Therefore, the proposed model can be effectively used in the design phase of new AS/R systems.

  • In general, Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems (AS/RS ) have racks of equal sized cells to utilize the concept of unit-load. Most of the techniques for the performance estimation of a unit-load AS/RS are a static model or computer simulation. Especially, their models were developed under assumption that the Storage/Retrieval (S/R) machine performs only single command (SC) or dual command (DC). In reality, defending on the operating policy and the status of the system at a particular time, the S/B machine performs a SC or a DC, or becomes .: idle. In order to resolve these weak points, we propose a stochastic model for the performance estimation of unit-load AS/RS by using a single-server queueing model.   • The functional role of warehouses in modern industry is changing from an established concept of storage to a concept of circulation. The target of this study is to improve the stacker crane's efficiency for the internal operations of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS). Eight operating schemes are proposed under the combination of three conditions, namely, the storing method, the layout type, and the sequence of command execution. The moving distance of the stacker crane is calculated using the same gateway data through a simulation based on a C# program. The optimal operating scheme is proposed based on the analyzed simulation results. In conclusion, the combination of conditions of random storage, two-way type warehouse, and dual command execution elicits optimum results in travel efficiency for the stacker crane.

  • Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS), which is an element of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), is a widely used material handling equipment with conveyors and Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Until now the evaluation of operational policies of AS/RS and control algorithms is done theoretically or by computer simulations. In this study, a real-time control and communication software for an AS/RS is developed for actually moving AS/RS miniature. A PC-based real-time operational program can control the AS/RS directly through the communication port. The operational system has additional functions such as storage/retrieval management, inventory management, statistics management, and protocol simulation. The communication protocol simulator of S/R machine can be used for the controller of an S/R machine.

  • Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS), which is an element of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), is a widely used material handling equipment with conveyors and Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs). Until now the evaluation of operational policies of AS/RS and control algorithms is done theoretically or by computer simulations. In this study, a real-time control and monitoring software of an AS/RS is also developed by making actually moving AS/RS miniature. A PC-based real-time monitoring program can control the AS/RS directly through the communication port. The monitoring program has additional functions such as storage/retrieval management, inventory management, and statistics management. The program can not only collect the necessary statistics but monitor the current action of the AS/RS concurrently.

  • This paper deals with a Direct-Input-Output Manufacturing System (DIOMS) which has a number of machine centers placed along a built-in automated storage/retrieval system (AS/RS). During its operations, the storage/retrieval(S/R) machine picks up a pallet from the pickup/deposit port of a machine center and then moves it either to an empty rack opening of the AS/RS for temporary storage or to place it on the port of another machine center for subsequent operation. The machine layout problem in DIOMS is formulated as an integer mathematical programming whose objective is to minimize the total expected distance of the loaded S/R machine during a production period. Recognizing the limit of the exact solution procedure(the Branch and Bound method), two improvement-type heuristics are proposed. One is based on the simulated annealing method and the other the pairwise interchange method. The validity of the heuristics is examined with example problems.

  • We consider an AS/RS(Automated Storage/ Retrieval System) which performs both of single and dual commands. The service times of single and dual commands are assumed to be differently distributed. Steady-state probabilities at the service completion epochs are calculated. Then, we transform the arrival rates of storage and retrieval commands into those of single and dual commands. Using this, we propose a non-preemptive queueing model with priority for the performance analysis of an AS/RS, and obtain approximated means of queue lengths and waiting times.

  • This work focuses on the implementation and optimization of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System(AS/RS) which is associated with Logistics Information System(LIS). We survey literature and present a case study for the optimization of Logistics System. In the case study, we examine the adaptation and implementation of AS/RS after we analyzed the processes of the company. Logistics Information System is an important component to keep up with the competitive advantage in the global business environments. The company in the case applies LIS to its efficient physical distribution management. AS/RS leads to some benefits; maximized storage space, increased productivity, reduced labor costs and human error, and improved accuracy. AS/RS is found especially effective when working with narrow aisles and extremely high racks.

  • Full turnover-based storage policy (FULL) is often used to minimize the travel time needed to perform storage/retrieval operations in automated storage/retrieval systems (AS/RSs). This paper presents an approach for determining the required storage capacity for a unit load AS/RS under the FULL. An analytic model is formulated such that the total cost related to storage space and space shortage is minimized while satisfying a desired service level. To solve the model, some analytic properties are derived and based on them, an iterative search algorithm which always generates optimal solutions is developed. To illustrate the validity of the approach, an application is provided when the standard economic-order-quantity inventory model is used.

  • A large scale automated material handling system (AMHS) is simulated using real industrial input data to analyze its performance so that one can scrutinize the critical factors that affect the AS /RS performance. The factors included in this study are line balancing efficiency, the distance between machines, and cycle time of the machines. The performance of AS /RS is measured in terms of R/M utilities that are latter used to classify the AS/RS structure into three types such as Good, Normal, and Poor. Among the three factors considered in this study, the line balance efficiency within each AS/RS is found as the most critical factor which statistically affect the AS/RS performance.
