Numerical Analysis of Axial-Flow Cyclone Separator for Subway Station HVAC System Pre-Filter

  • In the Korean subway station, three types of pre-filters, which include auto filter, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and auto cleaning demister, are widely used. However, these devices have some problems such as the difficulty of maintenance and high operating cost. In this study, axial-flow cyclone separator was employed as a pre-filter inside a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. 3-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed on a single unit axial-flow cyclone and coupled unit axial-flow cyclone. Calculated and measured pressure drop of the designed axial-flow cyclone were found be comparable to other types of pre-filters and the observed cut-off diameter was less than 10 micron. Considering lower operating and maintenance cost, axial-flow cyclone was proved to be a better solution as a pre-filter.

  • If we can supply accurate minute flow rate to the households, we can solve many problems that are occurring in consequences of uncontrolled flow rate for the households. Therefore, this paper presents an innovative solution to the source of the problems by illustrating how we can control the flow rate to the household. This paper proves such problems even can be solved in a case when there is a room turned off the heating.

  • The chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is generally consisted of pad, slurry including abrasives and so on. However, there are some problems in a general CMP: defects, a high Cost of Consumable (CoC), an environmental problem. The slurry including abrasives especially gives rise to not only increase a CoC, but also prohibition from achieving an eco-process. This paper introduces an abrasive capsulation pad to achieve an eco-process decreasing abrasives used is CMP. The binder wth a water a water swelling and a water soluble characteristic is used for an auto-conditioning, and the $CeO_2$abrasive is selected for an abrasive capsulation pad. Comparing with a conventional CMP, an abrasive capsulation pad appears good characteristics in ILD CMP and is able to achieve an eco-process decreasing wasted slurry.

  • In these days, environmental concerns have been increased throughout the industry and community worldwide. To prevent the ozone depletion, ozone depletion potential of a refrigerant must be zero. Simultaneously, a refrigerant with low GWP (global warming potential) is very demanding to induce green house effect. Chlorine-free HFC-l34a is a refrigerant widely used for automotive air-conditioning system because its destruction potential is ecologically zero. Although HFC-l34a has no ozone depletion potential, its global warming potential is so high that it is not considered as a perfect alternative refrigerant that is acceptable for long-term use. In this paper, experimental measurement has been carried out to analyze the performance characteristics of automotive air-conditioning system using HFC-152a, which has low GWP and zero ODP. Also mixed refrigerant that is composed of HFC-152a and $CF_3$ was applied to investigate an alternative possibility for the automotive airconditioning system. As a result of this study, we could draw following conclusions; With respect to the variation of the rotational speed of compressor, outside air temperature and flow rate, the heat amount of evaporator and compressor and performance coefficient was varied.

The Recovery of Non-ferrous Metals from Broken Light Bulbs using the Magnetic Liquid Based Separation

  • The paper presents results of a study on the selective separation technology of ferrous and non-ferrous metals from broken light bulbs. The proposed method is to use magnetic fluids to obtain a magnetic fluid based- separation. [1] The study was conducted using three types of waste materials: regular light bulbs, auto light bulbs and neon tubes. In order to process the waste materials, a six stages technologic flow was developed: a) separation of light bulbs components; b) Physical and chemical analysis of raw materials; c) grain conditioning of the raw material; d) dry magnetic separation of ferrous components; e) magnetic fluid separation of non-magnetic material; f) recovery of the magnetic fluid adhered to the surface of the separated material grains. [2] This study shows that magnetic fluid separation is only profitable for regular and auto light bulbs and is not profitable in the case of neon tubes.

  • This paper describes a precise temperature control method for refrigerating and air conditioning systems. The control technique is based on the optimal servo control design method and the control algorithm is implemented on a personal computer. To control the precise temperature, two actuators such as an inverter for the compressor speed control and a stepping motor for regulating the expansion valve are used. The superheat and evaporator temperatures are chosen as the system output. So a multivariable system which has two inputs and two outputs to be controlled. The complicative model is identified by using an ARX(Auto Regressive eXogenous) model and the controller is designed by using the Matlab software.

  • A blind system for window glass has been designed and manufactured as a CapStone Design project at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. This system automatically controls the interior illuminance to maintain a uniform temperature. The aim of this project was to support an air conditioning system and heating equipment to maintain a good indoor environment. Proportional integral differential (PID) control using cadmium sulfide (CdS) sensors was applied to control it. Polaroid film was attached to the new blind system to reflect sunlight. It was found that the system had the potential to reduce energy consumption and may be used with a building energy management system (BEMS).

  • On processing of the shipbuilding, Various steel plates are used as the important material in many fields including the shell plate, a structure, etc. Therefore, the proper steel plate management system like a warehousing, pile, delivery is very important. Presently Operators manage the steel plate by using the software program, but they manage many parts manually, so many problems are generated on the steel plate check, management, and operator safety. In order to solve this problem, we developed Auto Steel-Plate Piling System. Also this system automatically manages and traces the steel-plate from warehousing to delivery.

The Effect on Fouling Reduction by the Ball Cleaning System in a Compressed Type Refrigerator

  • The present study was conducted to estimate the effect on fouling reduction in tubes of the condenser. It shows in detail how to calculate the fouling factor from the experimental results of refrigeration systems with or without the automatic cleaning system using sponge balls and to predict the variation of the factor with time. It also represents how to calculate the temperature and pressure decrease of the refrigerant vapor in the condenser and the load decrease of the compressor in the refrigeration system by fouling reduction.

An A/D Conversion of Signal Conditioning for Precision Instrumentation Use (정밀 계측 신호처리용 A/D 변환 구현)

  • In precision instrumentation system, an A/D conversion of signal conditioning has been always suffered from some problems ; offset and drift voltage with environmental situation. This paper suggests a method of reducing the offset voltage and the drift error from the A/D conversion hardware using analog signal switching technique with specific operational amplifier circuits. Also, we have designed a hardware active filter and a software digital filter with Auto Zero Tracking algorithm for better dignal process of the our proposed weighing system. Software technique was performed to obtain the stable data from A/D converter. As a result of our experimental works, the proposed system is expected to be used in the industrial field where a high precision measurement is required.
