  • A Remote Vital Sign Monitor is an in-home healthcare system designed to wirelessly monitor core-body temperature. The Remote Vital Sign Monitor provides accuracy and features which are comparable to hospital equipment while minimizing cost with ease-of-use. It has two parts, a bandage and a monitor. The bandage and the monitor both use the Chipcon2430(CC2430) which contains an integrated 2.4GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum radio. The CC2430 allows Remote Vital Sign Monitor to operate at over a 100-foot indoor radius. A simple user interface allows the user to set an upper temperature and a lower temperature that is monitored with respect to the core-body temperature. If the core-body temperature exceeds the one of two defined temperatures, the alarm will sound. The alarm is powered by a low-voltage audio amplifier circuit which is connected to a speaker. In order to accurately calculate the core-body temperature, the Remote Vital Sign Monitor must utilize an accurate temperature sensing device. The thermistor selected from GE Sensing satisfies the need for a sensitive and accurate temperature reading. The LCD monitor has a screen size that measures 64.5mm long by 16.4mm wide and also contains back light, and this should allow the user to clearly view the monitor from at least 3 feet away in both light and dark situations.

  • The paper presents an intelligent space management system for ubiquitous computing. The system is basically a home/office automation system that could control light, electronic key, and home appliances such as TV and audio. On top of these basic capabilities, there are four elegant features in the system. First, we can access the system using either a cellular Phone or using a browser on the PC connected to the Internet, so that we control the system at any time and any place. Second, to provide more human-oriented interface, we integrate voice recognition functionalities into the system. Third, the system supports not only reactive services but also proactive services, based on the regularities of user behavior. Finally, by exploiting embedded technologies, the system could be run on the hardware that has less-processing power and storage. We have implemented the system on the embedded board consisting of StrongARM CPU with 205MHz, 32MB SDRAM, 16MB NOR-type flash memory, and Relay box. Under these hardware platforms, software components such as embedded Linux, HTK voice recognition tools, GoAhead Web Server, and GPIO driver are cooperated to support user-friendly intelligent space.

  • This article is an overview of the digital library project, indicating what roles Koreas diverse digital collections may play. Our digital library prototype has simple architecture, consisting of digital repositories, filters, indexing and searching, and clients. Digital repositories include various types of materials and databases. The role of filters is to recognize a format of a document collection and mark the structural components of each of its documents. We are using a database management system (ORACLE and ConText) supporting user-defined functions and access methods that allows us to easily incorporate new object analysis, structuring, and indexing technology into a repository. Clients can be considered browsers or viewers designed for different document data types, such as image, audio, video, SGML, PDF, and KORMARC. The combination of navigational tools supports a variety of approaches to identifying collections and browsing or searching for individual items. The search interface was implemented using HTML forms and the World Wide Web's CGI mechanism.

  • With recent development of virtual reality technology, coupled with the growth of the marine industry, virtual underwater simulation systems are under development in various studies, for educational purposes and to simulate virtual reality experiences. Current literature indicates many underwater simulation systems to date have focused on the quality of visual stimulus delivered through three-dimensional graphics user interface, limiting the reality of the experience. In order to improve the quality of the reality delivered by such virtual simulations, it is crucial to develop multi-sensory technology rather than focus on the conventional audio-visual interaction, which limits experiencer from the sense of underwater immersion and existence within the simulation. This work proposes the immersive multi-sensory effector system, delivering the users with a more realistic underwater experience. The sense of reality perceived was evaluated, as the main factor of the virtual reality system.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of the kWebAnywhere system based on WebAnywhere, which assists people with severely diminished eye sight and the blind people to access Internet information through Web interfaces. The WebAnywhere is a server-based web reader which reads aloud the web contents using TTS(text-to-speech) technology on the Internet without installing any software on the client's system. The system can be used in general web browsers using a built-in audio function, for blind users who are unable to afford to use a screen reader and for web developers to design web accessibility. However, the WebAnywhere is limited to supporting only a single language and cannot be applied to Korean web contents directly. Thus, in this paper, we modified the WebAnywhere to serve multiple language contents written in both English and Korean texts. The modified WebAnywhere system is called kWebAnywhere to differentiate it with the original system. The kWebAnywhere system is modified to support the Korean TTS system, VoiceText$^{TM}$, and to include user interface to control the parameters of the TTS system. Because the VoiceText$^{TM}$ system does not support the Festival API used in the WebAnywhere, we developed the Festival Wrapper to transform the VoiceText$^{TM}$'s private APIs to the Festival APIs in order to communicate with the WebAnywhere engine. We expect that the developed system can help people with severely diminished eye sight and the blind people to access the internet contents easily.

  • This study developed a program that can produce videos easily and conveniently, focusing on teenage media producers. Through user research, we identified the needs and problems of teenage producers, and implemented a character customization function desired by users and an emotion and action recommendation system using GPT. In the rendering process, the final image was created by combining audio and video using OpenCV and FFmpeg. Teenage users who do not have expertise in video production can customize web drama characters through a simple interface and receive recommendations for emotions and actions with the help of GPT. The program of this study is expected to be a tool that can help teenage users who do not have expertise in editing and directing to produce high-quality videos, lower the entry barrier to video production, and contribute to the development of the one-person media industry. do. In the future, we plan to provide a video production environment considering mobile or vertical resolution versions.

  • In this paper, we propose a collaborative multimedia authoring system. Our authoring system represents a multimedia presentation in a 3D coordinate system. One axis represents the traditional timeline information (T-zone), and the other two axes represent spatial coordinates (XY-zone). Our system represents a visual media objects as a 3D parallelepipeds and audio media objects as cylinders. This interface allows for simultaneous authoring and manipulation of both the temporal and the spatial aspects of a presentation. Using our system, users can design multimedia presentations collaboratively in the unified spatio-temporal space while freely traversing the spatial domain and the temporal domain without changing the context of authoring. In addition, we suggest an efficient mechanism of concurrency control for shared objects generated by our collaborative writing system. The mechanism is mainly based on the user awareness, the multiple versions, and the access permission of shared objects. Our concurrency control mechanism is designed to keep data consistency by minimizing the collision due to the delay or the failure of network communication and to allow maximum responsiveness for users using optimistic concurrency control. Also, the mechanism maximize the responsiveness by refining the locking granularity and applying different concurrency control mechanisms to each.

  • The increase in the number of music files in smart phone and MP3 player makes it difficult to find the music files which people want. So, Query-by-Singing/Humming (QbSH) systems have been developed to retrieve music from a user's humming or singing without having to know detailed information about the title or singer of song. Most previous researches on QbSH have been conducted using musical instrument digital interface (MIDI) files as reference songs. However, the production of MIDI files is a time-consuming process. In addition, more and more music files are newly published with the development of music market. Consequently, the method of using the more common MPEG-1 audio layer 3 (MP3) files for reference songs is considered as an alternative. However, there is little previous research on QbSH with MP3 files because an MP3 file has a different waveform due to background music and multiple (polyphonic) melodies compared to the humming/singing query. To overcome these problems, we propose a new QbSH method using MP3 files on mobile device. This research is novel in four ways. First, this is the first research on QbSH using MP3 files as reference songs. Second, the start and end positions on the MP3 file to be matched are estimated by using multi-layered perceptron (MLP) prior to performing the matching with humming/singing query file. Third, for more accurate results, four MLPs are used, which produce the start and end positions for dynamic time warping (DTW) matching algorithm, and those for chroma-based DTW algorithm, respectively. Fourth, two matching scores by the DTW and chroma-based DTW algorithms are combined by using PRODUCT rule, through which a higher matching accuracy is obtained. Experimental results with AFA MP3 database show that the accuracy (Top 1 accuracy of 98%, with an MRR of 0.989) of the proposed method is much higher than that of other methods. We also showed the effectiveness of the proposed system on consumer mobile device.
