  • This study investigated the effects of mothers' nutritional attitudes and knowledge on their children's obesity inducing factors: eating habits, food preferences, food frequencies, and physical activities. The subjects were 774 mothers and their elementary school children (774) in Busan. About thirty percent of the children had a tendency toward obesity as a result of their eating habits, food preferences, food frequencies, and physical activities, but their mothers' nutritional attitudes and knowledge had little affect on their children's obesity inducing factors. Though the children were interested in their body weight changes, they chose not to practice appropriate eating habits. Thus, education about good eating habits and appropriate physical activities should be promoted for children's health and growth. Because the mothers' nutritional attitudes and knowledge had little affect on their children in this study, nutrition education in school needs to be enhanced. However, because mothers play many roles in their children's habit and health, they also need to be educated in order that their nutritional attitudes and knowledge help their children's health and growth directly. And school and home should be more closely connected.

Results: The perception scores of the parents and children for total parents child-rearing attitudes were significantly different. There were also significant difference in the subcategories, affectionate-hostile, autonomous-controlling, rational-irrational. The scores for total behaviors problem as well as the sub-categories were all significantly different for the parents and children. Methods: The participants were 114 junior high school students enrolled in 7th to 10th grade in Cavite Province, Philippines. The collected data were analyzed in SPSS, using descriptive statistics, the independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple linear regression. Results: The factors affecting eating attitudes were body dissatisfaction (β=-.47, p<.001), social media affinity (β=.33, p<.001) and grade (10th grade) (β=-.28, p<.001), and the factors influencing body dissatisfaction were eating attitudes (β=-.65, p<.001) and social media affinity (β=.17, p=.041). Conclusion: In order to promote healthy eating attitudes and to improve body satisfaction among Philippine adolescents, educational strategies tailored to social media users will be needed.

Method: The participants were 385 undergraduate students in H University in G city. Data were collected from March 1 to April 30, 2012, and analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Results: The mean of the aging knowledge score was 51.40, the mean of aging attitudes score was 3.06, and the mean of awareness about supporting the aged score was 4.11. Awareness about supporting the aged showed a positive correlation with aging knowledge (r=.299, p<.001). Awareness about supporting the aged showed a positive correlation with aging attitudes (r=.244, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate a need to develop programs for undergraduate students to increase correct aging knowledge, to encourage appropriate aging attitudes and awareness about supporting the aged. In addition, the need for further studies to examine effects of programs are needed.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships between parents'attitudes toward emergent literacy and home literacy practices with toddlers and preschoolers. The researcher developed the instrument based on a literature review and on other researchers'(Fitzgerald, Spiegel, & Cunningham, 1991; DeBaryshe & Binder, 1994) questionnaires for parents of toddlers and preschoolers. The researcher did a pilot study to examine the appropriateness of the questionnaires with 68 parents. A total of 274 parents who sent their children to daycare centers participated in this study in central Pennsylvania. To analyze the data for this study, The researcher employed Frequency, Mean, Standard Deviation, Pearson's correlations, Multiple Regression Analysis. Demographic characteristics and parents'attitudes toward emergent literacy which consisted with writing and reading attitudes of literacy were related to home literacy practices for toddlers and preschoolers.. Writing attitudes and verbal participation in reading were the most predicting variables in home literacy practices. The results of this study addressed the importance of the role of belief systems in literacy teaming between parents and children.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how a sense of community, community provisions, and acculturation attitudes towards Korean and American cultures are related to Korean immigrant parents' parental satisfaction. 477 surveys, consisting of 291 females and 186 males, were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results showed that a sense of community directly influenced acculturation attitudes toward American culture and parental satisfaction. Acculturation attitudes toward American culture also directly influenced parental satisfaction. A sense of community had significant indirect effects on parental satisfaction. These results imply that a sense of community within a larger community plays an important role in Korean immigrant parents' acquisition of identities as members of a new country. Building a sense of community is also important for them to experience less acculturation stress and become more satisfied with their parenting while adjusting to a new culture. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

  • It is common that whoever is having a very low achievement level in mathematics has a poor attitude toward mathematics. However, it is totally opposite when we look at the case of Korean students. On several studies on international comparisons in mathematics and science achievement, Korean students recorded a top ranks among the nations. However, their attitudes toward mathematics are very poor; almost at the bottom in international assessment among other countries compared to international peers. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between students' attitudes toward mathematics and teaching methods and to analyze findings of research articles published within the last 15 years. These findings will contribute not only to understanding a relationship between students' attitudes toward mathematics and teaching methods, but to provide guidelines for how students' attitudes toward mathematics can be improved.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine: (1) the relationships among internalization of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, body comparison, and body dissatisfaction in adolescent girls; and (2) whether or not body comparison mediates the relationship between internalization of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance and body dissatisfaction. The participants consisted of 291 girls from fifth through ninth grades. The data were collected by means of questionnaires given in classroom settings. The findings are as follows: there are significant bivariate correlations among internalization of sociocultural attitudes toward appearance, body comparison, and body dissatisfaction. Furthermore, body comparison partially mediates the relationship between internalization of sociocultural attitude towards appearance and body dissatisfaction. These results seem to indicate that the idea that there are multiple standards of beauty and individuality for every person should be promoted, and this in turn could lower the risk of body dissatisfaction among adolescent girls.

  • This study explored the effects of self efficacy, classroom contextual characteristics and help-avoidance attitudes on academic help-seeking behavior. Participants were 210 4th grade students. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis through the SPSSWIN 12.0. Results showed that students' self efficacy, perception of teacher behavior and goal orientations were positively related to help-seeking behaviors. Help-avoidance attitudes were negatively related to help-seeking behaviors. Cognitive efficacy and social-emotional efficacy facilitated help-seeking behaviors. Help-seeking behaviors were influenced by teacher's supportive help and expectation. Mastery goal orientations and performance-approach goal orientations promoted help-seeking behaviors but performance-avoidance goal orientations impeded help-seeking behaviors. Autonomous intention attitudes expedited help-seeking behaviors but intention based on ability diminished help-seeking behaviors.

  • This study examines the relationships between visitors' environmental attitudes as measured by the new environmental paradigm (NEP) and their recreational motivations based on data collected from a national park in South Korea. The data analysis indicated that visitors' environmental attitudes and motivation were multi-dimensional structures. The NEP composed of three factors named 'Humans over Nature', 'Balance of Nature', and Limit to Growth'. Visitors' motivation also composed of four factors representing 'Achievement and Stimulation', 'Escape and Enjoying Nature', 'Social and Leadership', and 'Family'. However, there were significant correlations among the factors, suggesting they were independent each other. There were also significant differences in visitors' motivation due to their level of environmental attitudes.
