Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate death attitude, death anxiety, and knowledge toward advance directives of nursing students. Method: Participants were 157 nursing undergraduates in Korea. The students responded to a self-reporting questionnaire that included demographics, Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), Revised Death Anxiety Scale (RDAS), and knowledge toward advance directives. The data collection period was December, 9-13, 2019. Data were analyzed by descriptive test, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results: The mean scores for death attitude, death anxiety, and knowledge toward advance directives were 2.70±0.58, 2.45±0.49, and 7.94±2.04, respectively. Knowledge toward advance directives was significantly different according to age, grade, and experience of end-of-life care education. Death attitude was significantly associated with death anxiety (r=. 27, p<.001). Conclusion: Knowledge toward advance directive was relatively low compared to the findings of previous studies. Therefore, nursing colleges need to include legal and institutional aspects when writing written letters on advance directive, death attitude, and ethical approaches to death anxiety.
Purpose: The purpose of this experimental study was to examine the values of a death education program developed to improve life satisfaction and attitude toward death in college students. Methods: The death education program was developed and then used with 22 college students for 5 weeks, once a week for 150 min. Before and after the intervention, students responded a questionnaire developed to measure life satisfaction and attitude toward death. t-test, $X^2$-test, and paired t-test with the SPSS program were used to analyze the data. Results: The death education program significantly improved life satisfaction but had no statistically significant effect on attitude toward death. There was a significant difference in life satisfaction between the experimental and control groups but not in attitude toward death. Conclusion: Based on the above results, it is apparent that the death education program has an affirmative effect on life satisfaction in college students and some impact on attitude toward death. We suggest, therefore, that the death education program should be used with all human beings to help them recognize the values of themselves and their current lives and improve their satisfaction with life.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate paramedic students' awareness and attitude toward a do not resuscitate (DNR) order and death. Methods: This research was conducted among 421 students from the Department of Emergency Medical Technology in a 4-year college located in the Chungcheong and Daejeon districts, from May 14 to 22, 2014. Data were analyzed by using IBM SPSS 21.0. Results: The mean level of attitude toward death was 2.17. The paramedic students with clinical experience showed a positive attitude toward death, of whom 72.0% answered that a DNR order is necessary. The mean level of attitude toward DNR was 2.88. The paramedic students with clinical experience showed a positive attitude toward a DNR order. They indicated that sanctity of life should be respected rather than extending ineffective treatment and that patients' decisions on DNR should be respected. The students who had more knowledge about DNR and felt the necessity of DNR had a positive attitude about death and DNR. Conclusion: Paramedic students need systematic education for proper recognition and values establishment about death and DNR.

Purpose: This study aimed to examine paramedic students' attitudes towards death with dignity and identify the factors that influence their attitudes toward death with dignity. Methods: The study was conducted with 288 paramedic students in Districts C and D from April 13 to May 4, 2024. The questionnaire was self-reported and collected by sending a URL to those who agreed to participate. Results: The mean scores for the variables were 3.03 for perception of death, 2.92 for awareness of biomedical ethics, and 3.16 for attitude toward death with dignity. Positive correlations were observed between the perception of death and awareness of biomedical ethics(r=.172, p=.004). Negative correlations were observed between the perception of death and attitudes toward death and dignity(r=-.289, p<.001). The factor that most influenced the attitude toward death with dignity was the perception of death(𝛽=-.219, p<.001). Conclusion: Biomedical ethics education suitable for the job is needed to promote a positive attitude toward death with dignity by promoting a positive perception of death and improving awareness of biomedical ethics.
Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the factors affecting the attitudes toward brain death organ donation among nurses and doctors in an operating room. Methods: A descriptive research was used. The participants included 90 nurses and 30 doctors who had experience of operating organ transplantation for brain death organ donation. Data were collected from March 12 to May 23, 2020 in the one tertiary general hospital. The outcome measures were perception and attitude of death and attitude towards brain death organ donation. Results: Attitudes toward brain death organ donation was influenced by type of occupation, intention of organ donation and attitude toward death. In addition, the explanatory power of the total variance was 52.1%. Conclusions: Based on the results, it is necessary to prepare an intervention to improve awareness of the brain death and the brain death organ donation.
Purpose: The purpose of this research was to determine the effects of hospice and palliative care education on knowledge of hospice and palliative care and attitude toward death in nursing students. Method: Subjects of this study included 49 nursing students. Using a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research design, we conducted experiments to determine the effects of a hospice and palliative care education during a period of seven weeks from August through November 2009. The program was composed of seven sessions (total: 28hrs). The SPSS/Win 18.0 program was used for analysis of collected data. Results: A significant change in knowledge of hospice and palliative care and attitude toward death was observed after the intervention. Conclusion: The hospice and palliative care education was effective for nursing students in improving their attitude toward death and in increasing knowledge of hospice and palliative care. Therefore, I recommend generous application of this program to nursing students in order to improve knowledge of hospice and palliative care and attitude toward death.
Objectives : This study aims to examine the effects of death education program on meaning in life, death anxiety and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients among nursing students. Methods : Subjects were 155 nursing students of the K college. Before and after the intervention, students responded a questionnaire developed to measure meaning in life, death anxiety and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients. To analyse the data, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, t-test, and paired t-test were used with an SPSS 12.0 program. Results : 1. Meaning in life and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients levels significantly increased, death anxiety levels significantly decreased. 2. Meaning in life levels increased significantly in the 20-24 age group, female, first grade, no religion, no death experience of relatives. 3. Death anxiety levels decreased significantly in the 20-24 age group, female, no religion, no death experience of relatives, but increased significantly in a buddhist group. 4. Attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients levels increased significantly in the 20-24 age group, female, first grade, won buddhist, no death experience of relatives. Conclusions : This study, through the above result, shows that the death education program can be an effective nursing education to improve meaning in life and attitude toward nursing care of the dying patients and to decrease death anxiety. These results suggest that the death education program will be helpful for recognizing the values of themselves and their current lives and improving their nursing intervention care of the dying patients.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of nurses' attitude toward death and their perception of hospice and palliative care on their terminal care stress in long-term care hospitals (LCHs). Methods: Participants included 127 nurses from 6 Incheon LCHs. Data were collected between July and August, 2020. Self-report questionnaires were administered to collect data on their general characteristics, terminal care stress, attitude toward death, and perception of hospice and palliative care. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple linear regression using the SPSS 23.0 statistical program. Results: Nurses' terminal care stress was affected by their attitude toward death (𝛽=.30, p<.001) and perception of hospice and palliative care (𝛽=.28, p=.002) with an explanatory power of 21.6%. Conclusion: Terminal care stress was significantly associated with their attitude toward death and perception of hospice and palliative care. Therefore, educating nurses in LCHs about death and hospice and palliative care is essential to manage their terminal care stress effectively.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitude toward death in Korean nursing students. Method: The sample consisted of 365 baccalaureate nursing students. The questionnaires included questions on sociodemographics and death-related characteristics of the participants, and the Fear of Death and Dying Scale (FODS) to measure the attitude toward death. Result: The mean of the FODS score was 2.63 out of 4, so the participants had a slightly negative attitude toward death. There were statistically significant differences between gender, religion, religion activity, perceived health status, experience of parents' death, experience of friend's death, and overall FODS score. Among the four subscales of overall FODS, the score of the fear of death of self was significantly higher in the participants who experienced clinical practice and who experienced patient's death in the intensive care unit compared to the emergency room. Conclusion: Based on the study results, educational programs to change the attitude toward death are required before clinical practice. Programs need to consider nursing students' gender and religion, and give opportunity to share experiences and feelings about death of family or friend. In addition, using standardized patients and simulators is advised in the need for simulation training.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of perception of good death and knowledge toward advance directive on attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment among university hospital nurses. The subjects of this study were 207 university hospital nurses. Data were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics 24.0 version. The results showed that factors influencing attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment were perception of good death (𝛽=-.32, p<.001), education experience for good death (𝛽=.15, p=.024), and knowledge toward advance directive (𝛽=.14, p=.036). They explained 14.2% of attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. Based on the results of this study, it suggests the development of education programs for good death and life-sustaining treatment to improve the perception of good death, knowledge toward advance directive of university hospital nurses.
