  • Landscape plants as attenuator of vehicular noise were basically experimented with 8 kinds of trees and shrubs at the university nursery, and checked the attenuating effects by the planted distances, species and sound frequencies. The experimental results are shown and sumarized as follows ; 1. Most plants showed the considerable noise attenuating function in the sound frequencies of 63Hz and 1,000Hz. Tall trees such as Juniperus chinensis var. kaizuka and Magnolia grandiflora showed better effects than shrubs or small trees such as Gardenia jasminoides, Osmanthus fragnance, Osmanthrs heterophyllus, Rhododendron indicum, Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Tetragona Aurea' and Pinus paruiflora in 63Hz frequency, but shrubs showed better effects in 1,000Hz. 2. Trees showed 6~8dB attenuation and shrubs 4~5dB regardless an increase of distance between sound source and receiver in 63Hz. 10 meter width of tree belt could reduce 10 more dB, but 5 meter of shrub belt showed the same effect in 1,000Hz. 3. Trees having more leaves and wider crown showed constantly increase of attenuation of sound by the distance in 1,000Hz, and distinct increase of attenuation were observed in 2,000 more Hz.

  • Underwater images carry information that is useful in the fields of aquaculture, underwater military security, navigation, transportation, and so on. In this research, we transmitted an underwater image through various underwater mediums in the presence of underwater turbulence and beam attenuation effects using a high-speed visible optical carrier signal. The optical beam undergoes scintillation because of the turbulence and attenuation effects; therefore, distorted images were observed at the receiver end. To understand the behavior of the communication media, we obtained the bit error rate (BER) performance of the system with respect to the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Also, the structural similarity index (SSI) and peak SNR (PSNR) metrics of the received image were evaluated. Based on the received images, we employed suitable nonlinear filters to recover the distorted images and enhance them further. The BER, SSI, and PSNR metrics of the specific nonlinear filters were also evaluated and compared with the unfiltered metrics. These metrics were evaluated using the on-off keying and binary phase-shift keying modulation techniques for the 50-m and 100-m links for beam attenuation resulting from pure seawater, clear ocean water, and coastal ocean water mediums.

  • A non-integrated type noise filter on a Coplanar Waveguide (CPW) transmission line is demonstrated by using a highly resistive $Co_{41}Fe_{38}Al_{13}O_8$ nanogranular thin film with the dimensions of $4\;mm (\iota)\times4\;mm(\omega)\times0.1\;{\mu}m(t)$. The noise suppression characteristics are evaluated without placing an insulating layer between the CPW line and the magnetic thin film. The insertion loss is very low being less than 0.3 dB and this low value is maintained up to 2 GHz. At a ferromagnetic resonance frequency of 3.3 GHz, the power loss is very large and the degree of noise attenuation is measured to be 3 dB. This level of noise attenuation is still small for real applications; however, considering the small magnetic volume used in this work, further improvement is expected by simply increasing the magnetic volume and by integrating the magnetic thin film into the CPW transmission line.

  • In many fire emergencies, the auditory fire alarm signals are very important to save the occupant's life. But as the sound insulation of building elements has been improved, it is more difficult for occupant to recognize the fire alarm signals when the audible fire alarm worked. This is the first study to show the sound attenuation of audible fire alarm device in apartments. We measured and analyzed the sound attenuation level in seven units. The result showed that it was not sufficient to detect the sound from the fire alarm device in bedrooms. Whether the fire alarm device worked or not, the differences of sound level in bedrooms were below 1$\sim$10 dBA. To give the minimum sound level 60 dBA in bedrooms, the proper sound levels from alarm device installed in livingrooms were suggested using computer simulation.

  • The silencers are used to attenuate noise generated by the exhaust fan for industrial processes. The types of silencers applied in this study are absorptive duct silencer, expansion chamber, absorptive chamber and resonator. This study was carried out to verify the attenuation by the various silencers and elements. As a result, the difference of attenuation between the calculation and the measurement was about 1-7㏈. The attenuation by absorptive duct silencer and absorptive chamber was negligible at frequencies below 250Hz. The expansion chamber should be used for low frequency applications where the absorptive duct silencer was Ineffective. The attenuation by resonator may be realised when the ratio of frequency to resonant frequency approaches 1.

  • With rapid industrial development, a railway has become a main traffic means. But, the railway noise has caused much annoyance for the residents living nearby railway tracks. Therefore, execute regulation standard of railway noise has established for quite dwelling environment from January 2000. However efficient soundproofing measures are very difficult because of the lack of basic data and insufficiency of the existing research. In this point, this study attempts to survey the characteristics of attenuation and propagation of railway noise. And this study intends to get the basic data for establishment of a standard for domestic railway noise.

  • The performance of noise attenuation of the adaptive active noise control algorithm is improved using the recurrent neural network. The FXLMS that has been frequently used in the active noise control is simple and has low computational load, but this method is weak to nonlinearity of the main or secondary path since it is based on the FIR linear filter method. In this paper, the recurrent neural network filter has been developed and applied to improvement of the active noise attenuation by simulation.

  • This paper deals with the characteristic analysis of noise filter for the reduction of conduction noise, especially, common-mode noise. Attenuation in the system containing noise filter is analyzed and equivalent circuits for common- and differential- mode noise are derived. To clarify the effects by parasitic components of the inductor and capacitor, digital simulations using Design Center are carried out.
