  • The size and concentration of wear debris in lubricating oil often reveal the operating condition of the rotating machinery. To evaluate the possible application of light attenuation measurement for the estimation of wear debris concentration in the lubricating oil, the light transmittance through the lubricating oil cell contaminated with various concentrations of diatomire particles was measured, the attenuation coefficient was estimated from the transmittance measurement and the coefficients were compared with those obtained from the scattering theory. The comparision showed good agreements between them. It is also noted that the experimentally determined attenuation coefficient showed almost linear relation with particle weight coucentrations for the concentrations within the range of 2000 ppm. For the case of 0 ppm weight concentration of diatomire particles in the lubricating oil cell, the thickness of the cell required to give $100 \muW$ light attenuation is 7.75 mm. This result indicates that the light attenuation method will be one of the possible candidates of machine failure diagnostic sensors for the estimation of wear debris concentration in the lubricating oil.

  • To provide a quantitative parameter of evaluating diagnosis of the liver diseases accurately, the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was estimated from liver phantoms, 15 normal human livers and 30 liver disease patients. Two kind of phantoms(No.1: 1552m/s, No.2: 1562m/s) which have velocity (1560m/s) similar to that in human liver were constructed and their ultrasonic attenuation coefficients were determined. In this paper the spectral-shift approach and spectral-difference approach were used for estimating ultrasonic attenuation coefficient, \ulcornerdB/Cm.MHz). These two approaches were utilized to esitmate for 15 normal humans without any liver disease and 30 liver disease patients. The results indicate that the two types of phantoms produce the value of near the suggested value of 0.5 and the attenuation coefficients of hepatoma, normal liver, corrhosis, fatty liver and hepatitis show decreasing value in order named, suggesting that the present study can be of clinical value incorrelating the estimated attenuation coefficidents with the liver diseases.

  • In the analysis of the mass distribution and SMD (Sauter Mean Diameter), planar laser imaging technique Is a convenient and useful one when compared to the mechanical patternator or PDPA (Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer). But for the accurate usage of this laser technique, it is required to compensate the signal attenuation and to find the attenuation coefficients. In the present research, we considered effects of the spray distributions on the attenuation coefficient and improved the accuracy of planar laser imaging technique by the reduction of errors issuing from the signal attenuation.

  • Artifact corrections including normalization and attenuation correction were important for quantitative analysis in Nuclear Medicine Imaging. Normalization is the process of ensuring that all lines of response joining detectors in coincidence have the same effective sensitivity. Failure to account for variations in LOR sensitivity leads to bias and high-frequency artifacts in the reconstructed images. Attenuation correction is the process of the correction of attenuation phenomenon lies in the natural property that photons emitted by the radiopharmaceutical will interact with tissue and other materials as they pass through the body. In this paper, we will review the several approaches for normalization and attenuation correction strategies.

  • Background: Shielding properties of compound or mixture is presented in terms of mass attenuation coefficients using Monte Carlo simulation. Mass attenuation coefficients of cement, gypsum and the mixture of gypsum and $PbCO_3$ has been investigated using monte carlo MCNPX. Materials and Methods: The mass attenuation coefficients of cement, gypsum and the mixture of gypsum and $PbCO_3$ were calculated for photon energies 365.5, 661.6, 1,173.2, and 1,332.5 keV energies. Results and Discussion: The simulated values of mass attenuation coefficients were compared avaialable experimental results, theoretical values by XCOM and found good comparability of the results. Conclusion: Standard simulation geometry used in the present investigation would be very useful for various types of sample for shielding and dosimetry applications.

  • The study was carried out by numerical integration based on the diffraction properties and elemental composition. The elemental compositions of breast tissues in the literature were tested. The photon attenuation coefficients calculated using the recent elemental composition were found within 0.2-16% for adipose tissue and within 0.04-17% for glandular tissue with the experimental reference data. The attenuation coefficients of cancerous breast tissue calculated according to the elemental content previously measured in breast cancer patients were found within 0-17% with experimental data in the literature. The attenuation coefficients are of great interest to medical research. To calculate realistic attenuation coefficients, the characteristic coherent scatter, which is most intense at small angles, must be considered. For this reason, experimentally measured form factor data were reviewed, and the most compatible one with the theoretical form factor data produced in this study was used at low momentum transfer x (0 < x ≤ 8 nm-1). The differential linear coherent scattering distributions were calculated for an energy value of 17.44 keV and compared with their experimental counterparts.

  • The attenuation due to rain has been recognized as one of the major causes of unavailability of radio communication systems operating above about 10 GHz. To design radio links for telecommunications and to evaluate attenuation due to rainfall, it is important to have a good prediction model for rain attenuation such as a model for drop-size distribution of rainfall(DSD), a theoretical model for specific rain attenuation, and an empirical model fur effective path length through rain. In this paper, the extended generalized gamma distribution for drop-size distribution, based on the measurements in Chnugnam National University, is proposed as a new DSD model, and predicted specific attenuation characteristics using proposed DSD model and rain attenuation values in the 44 GHz satellite path using ITU-R effective path length model, are analysed. The predicted attenuation levels are also compared. It is found that an accurate prediction method for DSD is very important to reduce the prediction error in the local satellite path.

  • This study is to explain the characteristic of excess attenuation on the ground through the outdoors experiment about noise propagation and the reduced model experiment of acoustic. The outdoors experiment on the attenuation of noise propagation was tried with the small engine that had large acoustic output, and then it was conformed that there was relationship between the excess attenuation calculated by measurement from distance attenuation and Log(D/(Hs+Hr)). As a result, it was found that the attenuation of noise propogation depended upon the direction of the wind and frequency and was regressed in a straight line. And the numerical values of excess attenuation on the ground could be calculated by regarding Log(D/(Hs+Hr)) as a parameter with an airing resistance $\sigma$. It was found that when the mean square error between the excess attenuation calculated by measurement and the value calculated by a fomula $L=-20Log\mid1+(r_1/r_2)Qexp(ik, \bigtriangleup r)\mid$ about optional $\sigma$ was least, the optimal decision of u was made. As the characteristic of model is the model experiment on a reduced scale of 1 to 40, It was conformed that it corresponds enough with the measurement value with measuring the distance attenuation in the large anecoic chamber.

  • In this paper, we propose an interpolation technique to rain attenuation data which represents dynamic characteristics by time variations. By using this technique, it is possible to sample the rain attenuation data at an arbitrary time interval, and thus it would play an important role in developing adaptive transmission scheme for countermeasuring rain attenuation. We propose the interpolation technique which can synthesizes rain attenuation data by extracting the most proper parameters required to emulate the dynamic characteristics of rain attenuation. Interpolation results to measured data of I minute time interval will be demonstrated, and it is shown that more exact performance evaluation of adaptive transmission scheme to countermeasure rain attenuation can be achieved.
