  • Interferometric Monitor for Greenhouse Gases (IMG) is a sensor to monitor the earth's radiation balance, the temperature profile of the atmosphere, the temperature of the earth's surface, and physical properties of clouds, and was loaded on ADEOS satellite. In this paper, we estimated IMG level 2 data by comparing with a Clobal Telecommunications System data (GTS). The IMG level 2 data over sea without cloud cover gave good agreement with the value that had been obtained by buoy and sonde.

  • In this paper, a method for multi-physics analysis of the temperature-dependent properties of an oil-immersed transformer is discussed. To couple thermal fields with electromagnetic and fluid fields, an algorithm employing a user defined function (UDF) is proposed. Using electromagnetic analysis, electric power loss dependent on temperature rise is calculated; these are used as input data for multi-physics analysis in order to predict the temperature rise. A heat transfer coefficient is applied only at the outermost boundary between transformer and the atmosphere in order to reduce the analysis region. To verify the validity of the proposed method, the predicted temperature rises in high-voltage (HV) and low-voltage (LV) windings and radiators were compared with the experimental values.

  • In order to determine the precise effective temperature and surface gravity of warm stars, all synthetic spectral lines in the wavelength range of $4000-5700{\AA}$ with T=6000-7750 K, and log g=3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 for [M/H]=0.0, $V_{rot}$=10 km $s^{-1}$, and $V_{tubl}$=2 km $s^{-1}$ were calculated using the SYNSPEC package(Hubeny, et al., 1995) and the Kurucz(1995) model. Then, the depth-ratios for all line pairs were investigated and we selected two and six depth-ratios appropriate for the surface gravity and temperature indicators, respectively. We plotted six grids with X- and Y-axes for the depth-ratios of surface gravity and temperature, respectively, for the simultaneous estimation of these two atmospheric parameters. This method was applied to the spectum of $\delta$ Scu for the determination of its temperature and surface gravity simultaneously.

Modeling of transient temperature distribution in multilayer asphalt pavement

  • Mathematical model has been developed for determination of temperature field in multilayer pavement and subgrade, which considers transfer of heat by conduction and convection, receiving of heat from total solar radiation and atmosphere emission, output of heat due to the emission from the surface of pavement. The developed model has been realized by the finite element method for two dimensional problem using two dimensional second order finite element. Calculations for temperature field have been made with the programme realized on the standard mathematical package MATLAB. Accuracy of the developed model has been evaluated by comparison of temperatures, obtained theoretically and experimentally. The results of comparison showed high accuracy of the model. Long-term calculation (within three months) has been made in pavement points in accordance with the data of meteorological station for air temperature. Some regularities have been determined for variation of temperature field.

Application of Master Packaging System to Fresh Shiitake Mushroom Supply Chain on Semi-commercial Scale (생표고버섯에 대한 마스터 포장 시스템의 현장 적용)

  • Master packaging system is a technology combining primary and secondary packaging to preserve the fresh produce in the supply chain. Master packaging system with tailor-designed gas transfer and $CO_2$ absorber of $Ca(OH)_2$ was applied to fresh shiitake mushroom in its supply from farm to retail store. The temperature, humidity and package atmosphere were monitored through the distribution and/or storage until the packages were opened to measure the mushroom quality. Conventional perforated individual packages without secondary master pack were prepared and travelled the same path for comparison purpose. While high temperature history was observed in some initial period of actual practice of the mushroom transportation and storage unexpectedly, the package atmosphere around the produce in the master packaging system was maintained at modified atmosphere consisting of $O_2$ concentration of 0.4 to 4.2% and $CO_2$ concentration of 0.7 to 1.7%, which is known to be beneficial for the mushroom preservation. While curing the mushrooms with precooled drying was effective for quality preservation, positive effect of master packaging system could be apparent for the uncured mushroom. Harmonized combination of curing treatment, master packaging system and temperature management was suggested for the best quality preservation of the fresh shiitake mushroom.

  • Many of the familiar roadside signs advertising caves open to the public carry the phrase, “Come underground and cool off”. This is reasonable advice, for during the heat of summer the temperature of these caves is indeed pleasantly cool. If the principal tourist season were in the winter instead of the summer, however, the signs would probably read, “Come underground and warm up”, for in winter these same caves are far warmer than the surface. Cave temperatures are nearly constant throughout the year.
