  • This study proposes a model for road surface temperature prediction on basis of the heat-energy balance equation between atmosphere and road surface. The overall model is consisted of two types of modules: 1) Canopy 1 is used to describe heat transfer between soil surface and atmosphere; and 2) Canopy 2 can reflect the characteristics of pavement type. Input data used in the model run is obtained from the Korea Meteorological For model validation, the observed and predicted surface temperature data are compared using data collected on MoonEui Bridge along CheongWon-Sangju Expressway, and the comparison is made on winter and other seasons separately. Analysis results show that average difference between two temperatures lies within ${\pm}2^{\circ}C$ which is considered as appropriate from a micrometeorology point of view. The model proposed in this paper can be adopted as a useful tool in practical applications for winter maintenance. This study being a fundamental research is anticipated to be a starting point for further development of robust surface road temperature prediction algorithms.

  • For selected (pure and compound) metallic species effects of saturation ratio, temperature, particle size and number density on condensation mechanisms are first reviewed. The tendencies for vaporization and condensation differ between metallic species because of the significant differences in their saturation pressures. Then particle pressure of a metal vapor species at incineration temperature is calculated by simplifying waste as a compound of methane, chlorine and small amounts of metals and assuming a thermodynamic equilibrium state. Next the condition is assessed for which supersaturation of combustion gases by the species above the critical level for homogeneous condensation may occur, when the gases contain a large number of pre-existing particles such as entrained ashes. Regardless of the presence of chlorine in the waste, the homogeneous condensation of PbO vapors may occur, depending on number density of the pre-existing particles. However, when chlorine exists in the waste, the homogeneous condensation of PbCl$_2$vapors does not occur, which is similar to the case of Cd and Hg vapors. Thus these highly volatile species, PbCl$_2$, Cd, and Hg, may emit to atmosphere as vapor phase. In general, for reducing the emission of hazardous metallic species into the atmosphere, the number density of pre-existing particles has to be increased. For fixed particle number density, the temperature drop rate must be kept in low if the temperature at which a condensable vapor species emits from a incineration system is fixed, while the temperature drop rate must be kept in high if the residence time for which a condensable species stays in the system is fixed.

  • For this research, they were monitored $CO_2$ flux and environmental factors ($CO_2$ concentration, soil temperature, soil moisture, soil organic carbon, soil pH, soil Eh) in foreshore, paddy field and woods sites at the winter season (January 2009) and the summer season (September 2009). Seasonal and spatial variations for monitored data were analyzed, and linear regression functions of $CO_2$ flux as environmental factors were estimated. $CO_2$ fluxes averaged between surface and atmosphere monitored in foreshore and paddy field at the winter season were shown $-8\;mgCO_2m^{-2}hr^{-1}$ and $-25\;mgCO_2m^{-2}hr^{-1}$, respectively. $CO_2$ fluxes averaged between surface and atmosphere monitored in foreshore and paddy field at the summer season were shown $47\;mgCO_2m^{-2}hr^{-1}$ and $117\;mgCO_2m^{-2}hr^{-1}$, respectively. Thus, $CO_2$ was sunk from atmosphere to surface at the winter season and it was emitted from surface to atmosphere at the summer season. $CO_2$ fluxes in woods site were emitted $145\;mgCO_2m^{-2}hr^{-1}$ at the winter season and $279\;mgCO_2m^{-2}hr^{-1}$ at the summer season.

  • An optimum route to synthesize Ti-Mo system powders is investigated by analyzing the effect of the heat treatment atmosphere on the formation of the reaction phase by dehydrogenation and hydrogen reduction of ball-milled $TiH_2-MoO_3$ powder mixtures. Homogeneous powder mixtures with refined particles are prepared by ball milling for 24 h. XRD analysis of the heat-treated powder in a hydrogen atmosphere shows $TiH_2$ and $MoO_3$ peaks in the initial powders as well as the peaks corresponding to the reaction phase species, such as $TiH_{0.7}$, TiO, $MoO_2$, Mo. In contrast, powder mixtures heated in an argon atmosphere are composed of Ti, TiO, Mo and $MoO_3$ phases. The formation of reaction phases dependent on the atmosphere is explained by the partial pressure of $H_2$ and the reaction temperature, based on thermodynamic considerations for the dehydrogenation reaction of $TiH_2$ and the reduction behavior of $MoO_3$.

  • A drone has recently got attention as an instrument for weather observation in lower atmosphere because it can produce the high spatiotemporal resolution weather data even though the weather phenomenon is inaccessible. Sea fog is a weather phenomenon occurred in lower atmosphere, and has observational limitations because it occurs on the sea. Therefore, goal of this study is to analyze the vertical structures about inflow, development and dispersion of sea fog using the high-resolution weather data with the meteorological sensor-equipped drone. This study observed sea fogs in the west coast of the Korean peninsula from March to October 2021 and investigated one sea fog inflowed into the coast on June 8th 2021. θe - qv diagrams (θe: equivalent potential temperature, qv: water vapor ratio) and vertical wind structures were analyzed. At inflow of sea fog, moist adiabatically stable layer was formed in 0-300 m and prevailing wind was switched from south-southwesterly to west-southwesterly under 120 m. Both changes are favorable for sea fog on the location. θe and qv plummeted in a layer 0-183 m. The inflowed sea fog developed from 183 m to 327 m by mixing with ambient atmosphere on top of sea fog. Also, strong mechanical turbulence near ground drove a vertical mixing under stable layer. At dispersion of sea fog, as θe on ground gradually increased, air condition was changed to neutral. Evaporation occurred on both bottom and top in sea fog. These results induced dissipation of sea fog.

  • Container system automatically controlled in its atmosphere of high CO2/low O2 was devised to contain and store pork belly meat at chilled temperature. The meat in the container system was compared in the quality preservation at 0℃ for 21 days to that in air-filled container and vacuum package. The container atmosphere could be controlled to be of 47~60% CO2 and 7~10% O2 through time-controlled intermittent CO2 injection. The controlled atmosphere in the developed system was effective in suppressing pH change and aerobic bacterial growth contributing to sensory quality preservation. Compared to control of air-filled container, vacuum packaging showed lower microbial growth and slower pH change on the meat but with high drip loss. The devised container system to keep high CO2 and mildly low O2 concentrations is effective in the meat quality preservation on overall, and may be extended to a variety of meat products with possible modification tuned for product requirements.

  • In this paper we present an independent FORTRAN code for calculating LTE-plane-parallel model atmospheres. The transfer equation has been solved using Avrett and Loeser method. It is shown that, using an approximate non-gray temperature distribution together with the iteration factors method (Simonneau and Crivellari) for correcting the temperature distribution reduce the number of iteration required to achieve the condition of radiative equilibrium. Preliminary results for pure helium model atmospheres are presented.

  • The vaporization of $MgFe_2O_4$ was studied in $H_2-CO_2$ atmosphere over the temperature range of 600 to 90$0^{\circ}C$ by means of the transpiration method. It was found that the rate of vaporization for $MgFe_2O_4$ is controlled by a first order phase-boundary chemical reaction. The obtained activation energy of vaporization is 17.1 Kcal/mol.

  • A new method for measuring optical phase changes of reflection beam from optical mirror is proposed. The optical phase change is liable to change with varying atmosphere conditions. This optical phase changes are measured against air pressure, temperature, humidity and CO$\_$2/ concentration variations. It is clarified that the optical phase changes are most effected by humidity change.

  • NiAl powders containing oxide dispersoids have been produced by mechanical alloying process in a controlled atmosphere using high energy attrition mill. The powders have been consolidated by hot extrusion and hot pressing followed by isothermal annealing to induce microstructure coarsening to improve high temperature properties. Grain growth and dispersoid coarsening kinetics have been investigated as functions of annealing time and temperature. Coarsening of dispersion strengthen NiAl and dispersoid has been discussed. Some clues of secondary recrystallization have been investigated. Mechanical property measurements have been also made and correlated with the microstructures.
