  • One of the oldest, most common engineering problems is measuring the dimensions of different objects and the distances between locations. In AEC/FM, related uses vary from large-scale applications such as measuring distances between cities to small-scale applications such as measuring the depth of a crack or the width of a welded joint. Within the last few years, advances in applying new technologies have prompted the development of new measuring devices such as ultrasound and laser-based measurers. Because of wide varieties in type, associated costs, and levels of accuracy, the selection of an optimal measuring technology is challenging for construction engineers and facility managers. To tackle this issue, we present an overview of various measuring technologies adopted by experts in the area of AEC/FM. As the next step, to evaluate the performance of these technologies, we select one indoor and one outdoor case and measure several dimensions using six categories of technologies: tapes, total stations, laser measurers, ultrasound devices, laser scanners, and image-based technologies. Then we evaluate the results according to various metrics such as accuracy, ease of use, operation time, associated costs, compare these results, and recommend optimal technologies for specific applications. The results also revealed that in most applications, computer vision-based technologies outperform traditional devices in terms of ease of use, associated costs, and accuracy.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify perception level of QR and the usage level of QR technologes and to examine the relationships between the firm characteristics and the usage level of QR technologes and QR adoption in domestic fashon industry. Using the usage levels of QR technologes and QR adoption as the dependent variables, the selected firm characteristics, as independent variables, were firm size, perception level of QR benefits, and product characteristics. The findings from the empirical analysis of this study can be summarized as follows : Firm size and perception level of QR benefits were significantly associated with the usage level of QR technologies and adoption. Product characteristics were partly associated with QR adoption. The four elements were partly associated with QR adoption. Most of the QR adopters were using the QR technologies, and will tend to have four elements. From the results of this study, the researcher expects the information from this study to contributes to the body of knowlege about the identification, adoption and utilization of component technologies for QR management systems and draws several counterproposal as follows : The advancement of domestic fashion industry is possible through the systematic adoption of QR by the collaboration of the government & the industry. Most nonadopter had financial problems as a constraint to QR adoption. Financial supports are needed from trade associations and government. The fashion industry may promote the type of smart QR. The type of smart QR means usage level of QR technologies which reflect the firm characteristics and the actual industry state in domestic fashion industry. The fashion industry may establish information technology network (i. e., EDI, POS, EOS) between relative industry such as fiber, apparel manufacturers, retailers. The related industry should make a partnership.

  • Less mature nuclear reactor technologies are characterized by a greater uncertainty due to insufficient detailed design information, operational data, cost information, etc., but the expected performance characteristics of less mature options are usually more attractive in comparison with more mature ones. The greater uncertainty is, the higher economic risks associated with the project realization will be. Within a comparative evaluation of less and more mature nuclear reactor technologies, it is necessary to apply economic risk measures to balance judgments regarding the economic performance of less and more mature options. Assessments of any risk metrics involve calculating different characteristics of probability distributions of associated economic performance indicators and applying the Monte-Carlo method. This paper considers the applicability of statistical risk measures for different economic performance indicators within a trial case study on a comparative evaluation of less and more mature unspecified LWRs. The presented case study demonstrates the main trends associated with the incorporation of economic risk metrics into a comparative evaluation of less and more mature nuclear reactor technologies.

  • In this paper, we surveyed the opinion of MOTIE(Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy) R&D PDs about what are the future promising industries and their mainly associated Ppuri-technologies. According to the survey result, the future technology trends are to shift the technologies beyond their own critical performance and dominate human-centered technologies through converging technologies. In particular, the 4 industries, personalized medical technology, intelligent and emotional-based system, solar power technology and flexible technology, are expected to be good perspective industries in the near future. In order to grow these industries, we need to develop the core Ppuri-technologies that are very closely related to the future main industries. More than all, Ppuri-technology acts as a leverage for the future promising industry and is expected to be the strong supporter in manufacturing infra.

  • A technology is continuously developed in a rapidly changing global market. A company requires an appropriate R&D strategy for adapting to this environment. That is, the technologies owned by the company needs to be thoroughly analyzed to improve its competitiveness. Alternatively, technology classification using IPC codes is carried out recently in an objective and quantitative way. International Patent Classification, IPC is an internationally specified classification system, so it is helpful to conduct an objective and quantitative patent analysis of technology. In this study, all of the patents owned by company C are investigated and a matrix representing IPC codes of each patent is created. Then, a structured association map of the patents is made through association rules mining based on Confidence. The association map can be used to inspect the current situation of a company about patents. It also allows highly associated technologies to be clustered. Using the association map, this study analyzes the technologies of company C and how it changes with time. The strategy for future technologies is established based on the result.

  • Shiga toxin (Stxs)-producing enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) and Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1 are major causative agents of severe bloody diarrhea (known as hemorrhagic colitis) and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) associated with extraintestinal complications such as acute renal failure and neurologic impairment in infected patients under 9 years of age. Extreme nephrotoxicity of Stxs in HUS patients is associated with severe outcomes, highlighting the need to develop technologies to detect low levels of the toxin in environmental or food samples. Currently, the conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or immunoassay is the most broadly used assay to detect the toxin. However, these assays are laborious, time-consuming, and costly. More recently, numerous studies have described novel, highly sensitive, and portable methods for detecting Stxs from EHEC. To contextualize newly emerging Stxs detection methods, we briefly explain the basic principles of these methods, including lateral flow assays, optical detection, and electrical detection. We subsequently describe existing and newly emerging rapid detection technologies to identify and measure Stxs.

  • $21^{st}$ century has seen a tremendous advancement in the field of Information and Communication Technology. The commercial utilization of Internet tools and technologies has brought change in the traditional working environment. The functioning in an electronic environment is far more complicated than working in traditional environment and this brings many challenges, threats and potential problems. In this paper we analyze the challenges, threats and potential problems in the working environment of Pokhara University due to application of Internet tools and technology. We have chosen four basic areas on the basis of use that include web resources, electronic mails, social sites and P2P technologies. The main focus is to analyze the impact on work place productivity, social interaction, use and abuse of technology and legal issues associated with them. We, finally summarize the findings and offer solutions and recommendations from the observed data based on direct survey conducted in Pokhara University, Nepal.

  • Cancers are based upon an array of orchestrated genetic changes and the identification of changes causally related to the carcinogenic process. To elucidate the mechanism of cancer carcinogenesis, it is necessary to reconstruct these molecular events at each level. Microarray technologies have been extensively used to evaluate genetic alterations associated with cancer onset and progression in clinical oncology. The clinical impact of the genomic alterations identified by microarray technologies are growing rapidly and array analysis has been evolving into a diagnostic tool to better identify high-risk patients and predict patient outcomes from their genomic profiles. Here, we discuss the state-of-the-art microarray technologies and their applications in clinical oncology, and describe the potential benefits of these analysis in the clinical implications and biological insights of cancer biology.
