  • New algorithms for frequency channel assignment in small cellular mobile radio system are proposed. The algorithms are for a channel assignment method which control the transmitter power level based on the distance between the cell site and the mobile unit. These algorithms are such that any channel can be used by any cell site and mobile unit, as long as a required threshold level of carrier to interference ratio is maintained. As the cochannel reuse distance decreases, the proposed algorithms have given an increase in capacity in comparison to a fixed channel assignment.

  • In this paper, we propose a new channel assignment scheme considering traffic characteristics in the CDMA cellular system. The object of proposed method is to reduce the hard handoff of data calls which are very sensitive to transmission errors. In this algorithm, we use three channel assignment policies. First, all of the data calls are assigned to the primary CDMA channel if possible. Second, priority for primary CDMA channel is given to data calls by assigning some primary CDMA traffic channels exclusively for data calls. Third, data calls are assigned to the CDMA channel most served by neighbor cells, when all of the primary CDMA traffic channels are used. A performance analysis shows the minimum soft handoff probability of data calls in handoff which is guarantied any cellconfiguration is increased above 40% by the adopting proposed algorithm.

  • We describe the looper controller design for a hot strip mill. The looper is to control the strip tension which influences on the width of the strip. It is very important to control the looper control of the hot strip mill, but difficult to control the looper, because there exists mutual interaction among strip gauge, looper angle, and strip tension. In this paper, we present the modeling for the looper of a hot strip mill to control the tension of the strip and suggest a eigenstructure assignment method. The eigenstructure assignment is useful tool that allows the designer to satisfy damping, settling time, and mode decoupling specifications directly by choosing eigenvalue and eigenvectors. Desired eigenvalue and eigenvector are chosen to satisfy the desired responses.

  • This survey paper presents and overview on eigenstructure assignment (EA) control design methodologies. EA is an excellent control design method which may be used to assign the entire eigenstructure(eigenvalues, and right or left eigenvectors) of a closed-loop linear system via a full state or an output feedback control law. In general, EA is well-sutied for incorporating classical specifications on damping, settling time, and mode or disturbance decoupling into a modern multivariable control framework. The purpose of this paper is to provide an extensive survey on EA control design methods that might serve as an introduction to a study on EA. The fundamental concepts and formulations for understanding EA problems are extensively described. The recently reported results on EA are also presented.

  • This paper considers a problem of configuring both physical backbone and logical virtual path (VP) networks in a reconfigurable asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network where links are subject to failures. The objective is to determine jointly the VP assignment, the capacity assignment of physical links and the bandwidth allocation of VPs, and the routing assignment of traffic demand at least cost. The network cost includes backbone link capacity expansion cost and penalty cost for not satisfying the maximum throughput of the traffic due to link failures or insufficient link capacities. The problem is formulated as a zero-one non-linear mixed integer programming problem, for which an effective solution procedure is developed by using a Lagrangean relaxation technique for finding a lower bound and a heuristic method exploited for improving the upper bound of any intermediate solution. The solution procedure is tested for its effectiveness with various numerical examples.

  • This work presents a method of point-to-surface assignment for 3D inspection of solder pastes on PCB. A bounding box enclosing the solder paste tightly on all sides is introduced to avoid incorrect point-to-surface assignment. The shape of bounding box for solder paste brick is variable according to geometry of measured points. The surface geometry of the bounding box is obtained by using five peaks selected from the histogram of normalized gradient vectors for measured points. By using the bounding box enclosing the solder paste. the task of point-to-surface assignment is successfully executed. Subsequently, the geometrical features are obtained via surface fitting.

  • Traditional circuit partitioning algorithm using the cluster development method, which is suitable for such applications as single chip floor planning or multiple layer PCB system placement, where the clusters are formed so that inter-cluster nets are localized within the I/O connector pins, may not be appropriate for the functiona block placement in truly 3-D electronic modules. 3-D hybrid IC is one such example where the inter-layer routing as well as the intra-layer routing can be maximally incorporated to reduce the overall circuit size, cooling requirements and to improve the speed performance. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm called MBE(Minimum Box Embedding) for the layer assignment of each functional block in 3-D hybrid IC design. The sequence of MBE is as follows` i) force-directed relaxation in 3-D space, ii) exhaustive search for the optimal orientation of the slicing plane and iii) layer assignment. The algorithm is first explaines for a 2-D reduced problem, and then extended for 3-D applications. An example result for a circuit consisting of 80 blocks has been shown.

  • The design problem of partial pole assignment (PPA) in two classes of frequency-domain MIMO models by constant gain feedback is investigated in this paper. Its aim is to design a constant gain feedback which changes only a subset of the open-loop eigenvalues, while the rest of them are kept unchanged in the closed-loop system. A near general parametric expression for the feedback gain matrix in term of a set of design parameter vectors and the set of the closed-loop poles, and a simple parametric approach for solving the proposed problem are presented. The set of poles do not need to be previously prescribed, and can be set undetermined and treated together with the set of parametric vectors as degrees of design freedom provided by the approach. An illustrative example shows that the proposed parametric method is simple and effective.

  • Since large space structures(LSS) such as a space station, a solar power station satellite, etc., are theoretically distributed parameter and infinite-dimensional system, they have to be modeled into large finite-dimensional systems for control system design. Besides, there are fundamental problems in active vibration control of the large flexible structures. For example, a modeled large finite-dimensional system must be controlled with a much smaller dimensional controller. This causes the spillover phenomenon which degrades the control performances and reduces the stability margin. Furthermore, it may destabilize the entire feedback control system. In this paper, we proposed a novel control method for spillover suppression in the control of large flexible structures by using eigenstructure assignment. Its effectiveness in spillover suppression is investigated and verified by the numerical experiments using an example of the simply supported flexible beam which is modeled to have four controlled modes and eight uncontrolled modes.

  • A hierarchical placement system based on routing region assignment has been developed to increase the probability of routing completion after placement. While most of the existing placement systems attempt to reduce the cell density at the portions where routing density is high, our method is distinguished in that specific routing regions are allocated to secure complete routing where the routing density is greater than the routing capacity. Hierarchy is vuilt by clustering and recursive paritioning, and the initial placement obtained by partitioning at each level is improved by using the region refinement algorithm. After placement at each hierarchical level, global routing is performed and fouting regions are assigned, if routing density is greater than routing capacity, to be considered at the next level of placement. the proposed algorithm has been implemented and applied to place several industrical gate-array circuits. A couple of circuits which cannot be routed by using conventional placement techniques can be completely routed by using our new placement technique with routing region assignment.
