This paper presents the contact pressure distribution of pin bushing bearings for various lubrication friction modes such as oil film and elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts, a mixed lubrication contact, a boundary contact, and a dry contact. During a sliding contact of a plain bearing, the boundary and dry rubbing contacts are dominated between a piston pin and a pin bushing bearing. This may come from a micro-scale clearance, an explosive impact pressures from the piston head, and an oscillatory motion of a pin bearing. The computed results show that as the oil film parameter $h/{\sigma}$ is increased from the dry rubbing contact to the oil film lubrication friction, the maximum oil film pressure is radically increased due to an increased viscous friction with a thin oil film thickness and the maximum asperity contact pressure is reduced due to a decreased asperity contact of the rubbing surfaces.

Finite element technique considering adhesive forces is proposed and applied to analyze the behavior of elastic hemispherical asperity adhesively contacting the plane surface of semi -infinite rigid body. It is demonstrated that the finite element model simulates interfacial phenomena such as jump -to-contact and adhesion hysteresis that cannot be simulated with the currently available adhesive contact continuum models. This simulation aiso provides valuable information on contact pressure, contact region and stress distributions. This technique is anticipated to be utilized in designing a low-adhesion surface profile for MEMS/NEMS applications since various contact geometries can be analyzed with this technique.
This paper presents hot spot behaviors on the rubbing surface of disk-pad type brake by using coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The height of micro-asperity on the rubbing surface is usually 2∼3 ${\mu}$m in practical disk brakes. Non-uniform micro-contacts between the disk and the rigid friction pads lead to high local temperature distributions, which may cause the material degradation, and develop hot spots, thermal cracks, and brake system failure at the end for a braking period. The friction temperatures on the rubbing surface of disk brakes in which are strongly related to the hot spot and thermal related wears are rapidly concentrated on the micro-contact asperities during braking. The computed FEM results show that the contact stress, friction induced temperature and thermal strain are highly concentrated on the rubbing micro-contact asperities even though the braking speed and force are small during the braking period. This hot spot may directly produce the slippage and various thermal wears on the brake-rubbing surface.

In case of contact fatigue, the accurate calculation of surface tractions and subsurface stress is essential to the predication of crack initiation life. Surface tractions influencing shear stress amplitude have been obtained by contact analysis based on influence function. Subsurface stress has been obtained by using rectangular patch solutions. In this study, to simulate asperity contact under sliding condition, the tip of asperity was simulated by sphere and to calculate crack initiation life in the substrate, dislocation pileup theory was used.

Two surfaces that have relative motion show different characteristics according to surface roughness or surface patterns in all lubrication areas. For two rough surfaces with mixed lubrication, this paper proposes a new approach that includes the contact characteristics of the surfaces and a probabilistic method for a numerical analysis of lubrication. As the contact area of the two surfaces changes according to the loading conditions, asperity contact is very important. An average flow model developed by Patir-Cheng is central to the study of lubrication for rough surfaces. This average flow model also refers to a multi-asperity contact model for deriving a modified Reynolds equation and calculating the lubricant characteristics of a bearing surface with random roughness during fluid flow. Based on the average flow model, this paper carried out a numerical analysis of lubrication using a contact model by considering a load change made by the actual contact of asperities between two surfaces. Lubrication properties show different characteristics according to the surface patterns. This study modeled various geometric surface patterns and calculated the characteristics of lubrication.

A variational approximation procedure is introduced to study the contact stresses between a representative asperity and a feature generally happening in superfinishing processes such as FAM. After a description of the model under consideration is presented, a system of governing equation for the model is derived fullowed by the assumptions made in order to make progress in model development. Final computation is made to evaluate contact stresses on an elastic asperity tip in small scale in size and a computer simulation is performed for detailed surface profile variations on a representative feature. Numerical results are presented along with a discussion of the conclusions that can be drawn from this analysis.

In this paper, FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis of friction was suggested as a method to interpret the contact conditions. Micro-grooves with various dimensions were fabricated on the silicon surface to investigate the frictional behavior with respect to the change in geometrical contact condition. Frictional forces between micro-grooved surfaces and spheres modeled as surface asperities were measured using a micro-tribotester which was built inside a SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). The experimental results show that the relative dimensions and distributions of contact asperities between two surfaces can be predicted by the power spectrum and the main frequency in FFT-based analysis of friction coefficient. Also, it was shown that the friction coefficient for multi-asperities was the result of the superposition of that for each asperity.
Finite element analysis is performed on the subsurface crack propagation in brittle materials due to sliding contact. The sliding contact is simulated by a rigid asperity moving across the surface of an elastic half-surface containing single and multiple cracks. The single crack, coplanar cracks and parallel cracks are modeled to investigate the interaction effects on the crack growth in contact fatigue. The crack location is fixed and the friction coefficients between asperity and half-space are varied to analyze the effect of surface friction on stress intensity factor for horizontal cracks. The crack propagation direction is predicted based on the maximum range of shear and tensile stress intensity factors. With a coplanar crack, the stress intensity factor was increased. However, with a parallel crack, the stress intensity factor was decreased. These results indicate that the interaction of a coplanar crack increases fatigue crack propagation, whereas that of a parallel crack decreases it.
The contact problem of a rigid smooth plane and computer-slmuiated elastic rough surfaces is studied by divided the sampling intervals into three groups. An iso-parametric element ,is used to calculate the contact pressure-separation relationship accurately. It is obtained that: 1) the more asperity shows the higher contact pressure, 2) the smaller element gives the better results but the effect is negligible.
In applications such as MEMS and NEMS devices, the adhesion force and contact load may be of the same order of magnitude and the static friction coefficient can be very large. Such large coefficient may result in unacceptable and possibly catastrophic adhesion, stiction, friction and wear. To obtain the static friction coefficient of contacting real surfaces without the assumption of an empirical coefficient value, numerical simulations of the contact load, tangential force, and adhesion force are preformed. The surfaces in dry contact are statistically modeled by a collection of spherical asperities with Gaussian height distribution. The asperity micro-contact model utilized in calculation (the ZMC model), considers the transition from elastic deformation to fully plastic flow of the contacting asperity. The force approach of the modified DMT model using the Lennard-Jones attractive potential is applied to characterize the intermolecular forces. The effect of the surface topography on the static friction coefficient is investigated for cases rough, intermediate, smooth, and very smooth, respectively. Results of the static friction coefficient versus the external force are presented for a wide range of plasticity index and surface energy, respectively. Compared with those obtained by the GW and CEB models, the ZMC model is more complete in calculating the static friction coefficient of rough surfaces.
