  • A two-dimensional thermal response and ablation analysis code for predicting charring material ablation and shape change on solid rocket nozzle is presented. For closing the problem of thermal analysis, Arrhenius' equation and Zvyagin's ablation model are used. The moving boundary problem are solved by remeshing-rezoning method. For simulation of complicated thermal protection systems, this method is integrated with a three-dimensional finite-element thermal and structure analysis code through continuity of temperature and heat flux.

  • The stability and solubility of piroxicam in propylene glycol (PG), polyethylene glycol (PEC), and PG-water cosolvents have been studied by using high performance liquid chromatography. The degradation rate followed an apparent first-order kinetic and the reaction rate constants at 70, 80, and $90^{circ}C$ were determined. From these rate constants, the activation energy and the rate constant of piroxicam at $25^{circ}C$ in pure PG calculated by Arrhenius equation were 23.34 kcal/mole and $7.0\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;day^{-1}$, respectively. Both of PG and PEG increased the solubility of the drug, but PEG was more effective.

  • We examined the steady state solution for a strongly exothermic mixtures in some class A geometries subjected to different boundary conditions under Arrhenius, Bimolecular and Sensitised reactions. The solution of the governing nonlinear reaction diffusion equation was obtained using the variational method formulation executed in Mathematica package. The paper elucidates the influence of geometry, boundary conditions and types of reaction on the thermal ignition of the reactive mixture. Apart from validating known results in literature, the solution gave further insight into the influence of material properties and conditions on the occurrence of thermal ignition.

  • Characteristics of Char-$CO_2$ gasification for petroleum coke, biomass and mixed fuels were compared in the temperature range of $1,100{\sim}1,400^{\circ}C$ using TGA (Thermogravimetric analyzer). Kinetic constants with respect to reaction temperature were determined by using different gas-solid reaction models. Also activation energy (Ea) and pre-exponential factors ($K_0$) in each models were calculated by using Arrhenius equation and then were compared with experimental values to determine reaction rate equation for char-$CO_2$ gasification. Reaction time for $CO_2$ gasification decreased with an increase of reaction temperature. Also, the activation energy of $CO_2$ gasification reaction for mixture with petroleum coke and biomass decreased with increasing biomass contents. This indicates that mixing with biomass could bring synergy effects on $CO_2$ gasification reaction.

  • The sprayable waterproofing membrane is a recently introduced material in the civil engineering field, and is a material that sprays and attaches a single phase or two phase powder or liquid material to a surface to be covered using a pump and nozzle. Although the material properties are gradually reported through researches, there is a lack of studies on long-term performance compared to concrete materials used with the membranes. In this study, the long-term performance of materials was estimated using the Arrhenius equation. The temperature conditions used in this study were 65℃, 80℃ and 95℃, and the temperature was maintained with the membrane attached to the concrete block for long-term behavior. Then the membranes were tested for tensile strength and adhesion strength in the order of 30, 90, 150, 200, and 300 days. The long-term performance of the material was determined from a long-term perspective by estimating the activation energy by the Arrhenius equation. Consequently, the time to reach 50% of the performance standard could be estimated by long-term test.

  • Respiration of 'Fuyu' persimmon (Diospyros kaki) fruits were measured in terms of oxygen consumption rate and carbon dioxide evolution by closed system experiments at 0, 5, and $20^{\circ}C$. Enzyme kinetics-based respiration model was used to describe respiration rate as function of $O_2\;and\;CO_2$ gas concentrations $(R=V_m[O_2]/K_m+(1+[CO_2]/K_i)[O_2])$, and Arrhenius equation was applied to analyze temperature effect. $V_m\;and\;K_m$ increased, while $K_i$ decreased, with increasing temperature. $K_m\;of\;O_2$ consumption was greater than that of $CO_2$ evolution at equal temperature. Inhibitory effect of reduced $O_2$ level on $O_2$ consumption was more prominent than that on $CO_2$ evolution. Activation energy of respiration decreased with reduced $O_2$ and elevated $CO_2$ concentrations. Activation energy of $CO_2$ evolution was greater than that of $O_2$ consumption. Permeable package experiments verified respiration model parameters by showing good agreement between predicted and experimental gas concentrations in package.

  • This paper presents the integrity evaluation method of the windings in cast resin transformers using vertical thermal distribution analysis. The method is to compare the temperature distribution in a sound condition specimen with that in the failure condition specimen layer-shorted by accelerated testing. The temperature distribution was acquisited by a infrared thermography system, and the Arrhenius equation was adopted to the accelerated testing. The proposed method may be available to detect the failures in cast resin transformers.

  • In general, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in the DC link of PWM inverters fur ac motor drives. The capacitor usually has the shortest lifetime in the system and then determines the lifetime of the inverter system. In this paper, a method of capacitor lifetime estimation is proposed by using an ESR(equivalent series resistance) model and a heat transfer model of capacitor, from which internal operating temperature is estimated. Then, the lifetime is predicted by Arrhenius's equation. A practical example is presented.
