This paper presents the temperature characteristics with structure of 18 kV lightning arresters for distribution. Three types of polymer arresters were fabricated and ceramic type arrester was also ready to investigate. Below $100^{\circ}C$, three types of polymer arresters exhibited almost the same leakage current value, but above $100^{\circ}C$, polymer arrester that arrester module was injected into polymer housing with grease exhibited the highest leakage current and the arrester with the lowest leakage current was the arrester that silicon rubber was directly injected to arrester module. The rising of leakage current of polymer arrester with grease was because of existing grease between FRP winding and silicon housing, and reducing the insulation characteristics of the grease. All polymer arresters exhibited the same temperature characteristics but ceramic typr arrester was slower than polymer arrester in heat emission despite lowest leakage current. It was thought that the air layer between ZnO varistor blocks and ceramic housing prevented the heat emission. However, in spite of the difference of the structure, the variation of the surface temperature of all arresters exhibited the same result.

This paper describes a new approach to the algorithm and fundamental characteristics of the device for monitoring the leakage currents flowing through zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arresters. In order to obtain a technique for a new on-line monitoring device that can be used in the deterioration diagnosis of ZnO surge arresters, the new algorithm and on-line leakage current detection device for extracting the resistive and capacitive currents using the phase shift addition method were proposed. The computer-based on-line monitoring device can sense accurately the power frequency leakage currents flowing through ZnO surge arresters. The on-line leakage current monitoring device of ZnO surge arresters proposed in this work has the high sensitivity compared to the third harmonic leakage current detection devices. As a consequence, it was found that the proposed leakage current monitoring device would be useful for forecasting the defects and degradation of ZnO surge arresters.
This paper describes the results of a study on the sealing integrity of polymer housed surge arrester based on the thermal mechanical test. The polymer housed surge arrester employs silicone insulating materials for its housing, instead of the conventional porcelain housing. The polymer housed surge arresters exhibited the highest sealing integrity because it is not air volume between the FRP(fiber reinforced plastics) module and the silicone housing. In accordance, the sealing integrity of station class surge arresters is investigated with moisture ingress test. And, the influence of sealing integrity was evaluated through such as measurement of the deflection, reference voltage, leakage current. In electrical characteristics, reference voltage decreased in the range of $16.45{\sim}16.15\;kV$ with after thermal mechanical test. In contrary, despite the continued moisture ingress, the polymer housed surge arresters exhibited almost the same leakage current value and the resistive leakage current has risen slightly. As a results, It was thought that the polymer housed surge arresters shows good stability with sealing integrity.
Water hammer pressure waves were measured in a simplified water piping system with and without arresters and air chambers by the operations of the solenoid valve. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of the location of the arresters and the effects of the volume of the air chambers on maximum and minimum water hammer pressures and wave frequency for various flow rates.
This paper describes the measurement result of leakage current flowing arresters connected in feeder lines to propose an optimal management method. Twenty seven arresters set in seven areas were analyzed on a regular basis for 4 months. The results showed that the RMS and the peak value of the total leakage currents for soundness arresters were a range of $200uA{\sim}00uA$. respectively. During the period of measurement, the magnitude of the leakage current didn't show conspicious changes and there were impossible places to analyze arrester's status due to including high THD rate in a feeder line, From the study, leakage current measurement has to be performed at a condition without running an electric train in the line, and the allowable RMS value of soundness arrester is bellow 600uA.
This paper presents characteristics of the aged and new 18kV surge arresters. In order to investigate aging characteristics, we measured total leakage current and resistive leakage current using specially made leakage current measurement system and also investigated $tan{\delta}$ of the arresters and microstructure of the elements. Through the investigation we found that all of the arresters does not aged for 2 years field operation.

The effects of surge arresters for the protection of transmission systems against direct lightning strokes have already been reviewed by many researchers. However, their studies have not encompassed underground cable systems. Therefore, in this paper we investigate the 22.9kV combined distribution systems that have arresters and ground wires. In addition, we analyze the overvoltages on underground distribution cable sections when direct lightning strokes contact the overhead ground wire using EMTP. Finally, we discuss the effect of lightning strokes according to the change of cable length and installation of arresters. This study provides insulation coordination methods for reasonable system design in 22.9kV underground distribution cable systems.
This paper reports the contamination performance of two distribution arresters (new and used ones) tested under three different contaminant conditions - clean fog, ESDD (equivalent salt deposit density) level (A, B, C, and D), and kaolin contamination conditions, and their leakage current, total leakage current, and component of the resistive leakage current were measured in order to diagnose arrester deterioration. The 3rd harmonics was larger than 5th and 7th ones for the arrester under the clean fog, and as the ESDD contamination level was applied, 5th one became relatively larger than 3rd one. Therefore, these results indicated that the resistive leakage current could be used for the diagnosis of the arresters.
The sealing integrity is related to the safe operation of arrester the prime failure reason of porcelain housed arresters is moisture ingress. To be a meaningful tests a polymer arrester sealing test must be a realistic acceleration of field service. We think the test should be an accelerating course of actual temperatures, the enduring property to mechanical load and temperatures should be considered together. A union test method consisting of the thermal mechanical test and thermal cycling test is proposed to test the sealing integrity of polymeric arresters, which uses dielectric loss, leakage current 1mA DC voltage and partial discharge as the diagnostic techniques, and the test results were presented. The comparison states that the TMTCUT method is suitable fur the test of sealing integrity of polymeric arresters. .

Dynamic characteristics of water hammer arresters installed in a building water supply system have been investigated numerically by utilizing a commercial code that employs the method of characteristics. Some preliminary results with those arrester models produced in this study agree well with the previously reported. Then, the arrester models have been incorporated into a water supply pipe system of a 59 $m^2$apartment unit constructed by a leading construction company, and their dynamic characteristics have been investigated, especially on the reduction in the water hammer pressure. It is found that the setting of the arresters in the pipe system, which is recommended by the company, may not be proper for reducing the pressure down below 1,082.0 kPa (10.0 kg$g_f$/$cm^2$) when quick-closure valves in the pipe system are closed within 30 ms at the static pressure of 542.6 kPa (4.5 kg$g_f$/$cm^2$). More arresters in the system may be required to meet pressure criteria stated on the related standards and codes.
