  • Background and Objetive : The aim of this study is to report 3 cases of facial palsy following microvascular decompression in hemifacial spasm patients. It is a rare disease, with few research on the effect of acupuncture therapy on it. Material and Method : We selected 3 cases of facial palsy following microvascular decompression in hemifacial spasm patients, among patients who visited the Facial palsy Clinic of Kyunghee Oriental Medical Center. We treated them with acupuncture therapy(ST6, ST4, BL2, TE17, GV24, GV14, and Ex-HN4 of the healthy side, and LI4 and ST36 of both sides) and aroma therapy. After treatment we observed and checked any changes within clinical symptoms using the House-Brackmann Grade and the Yanagihara's Unweighted Grading System. Result and Conclusion : 1. All three cases were of hemifacial spasm patients who had facial palsy following microvascular decompression. The patients visited 27 months(Case1), 2 months(Case2) and 7 months(Case 3) after the surgery respectively. 2. Period of time till complete recovery is 23 months(Case1), 8 months(Case2) and 3 month (Case3) respectively. 3. All three cases had symptoms of sequelae: retraction of mouth toward the healthy side and involuntary spasm of lips. The later the initiation of treatment after the sugery, the more severe symptoms of sequelae.

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the effects of Aroma inhalation therapy on test anxiety, stress and serum cortisol in nursing students. Methods: The study design was a pre posttest randomized design with a pre-survey, a 5-day experimental treatment (2012.11.17-21) and a post survey. Participants were 65 students - 31 in the aromatic inhalation group and 34 in the control group. The pre-survey included general demographic characteristics and test anxiety, stress and serum cortisol levels for all students. The experimental group received the aromatic inhalation using aroma oil (mixed Maychang, lavender, rosewood essence - ratio of 3:5:2). Results: The experimental group treated with aromatic inhalation scored significantly lower for test anxiety (t=-2.330 p=.023), physical stress (t=-2.910 p=.005) and psychological stress (t=-3.285 p=.002) compared to the control group. However, there were no differences in serum cortisol levels (t=0.228 p=.820). Conclusion: Results indicate that Aromatic inhalation, using maychang, lavender and rosewood essential oils, contributes significantly to reducing anxiety and stress among nursing students, and can therefore be an effective intervention for anxiety and stress.

This bathtub focuses on enhancement of multi-senses and enhancement of health, safety & convenience during bath. The enhancing multi-senses would have four functions; therapy with color and aroma, the massage with micro water bubbles, the visual and auditory with TV & cinema, and the auditory with music and radio. Also, enhancing others of bathtub would have seven functions; emergency bell, blood-pressure check system for health condition, water temperature indicator, keeping water warm, reading a book in that, and controlling of house entrance door and a getting the phone during bath. The aged consumers' needs find throughout a questionnaire survey, and 497 data was analyzed. The main results are as follow. They consider a full bath behavior as a healthcare. They have an intention to purchase or use the elderly and friendly bathtub, and they prefer using it in common facilities to using it at home. They highly need health related function of bathtub, which are massage (64.4%), blood-pressure check system (55.1%) and aroma therapy (45.7%). The emergency bell (67.0%), keeping water warm (62.2%), and water temperature indicator (49.7%), related to safety & information function of bathtub, are needed. Also, they think tolerance for error and low physical effort in bathtub design alternative, opening door and inside sitting support, to be important.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of heat therapy combined with aromatherapy on pain, flexibility, sleep, and depression in elderly women with osteoarthritis. Methods: This study was designed as a nonequivalent control group quasi-experimental study based upon data acquired through a pre-post test. The experimental group (n=21) was treated using an aroma-permeated hot compress applied to the knee. The cotton towel was heated in a microwave to $45^{\circ}C$, and 2~3 drops of lavender were applied on it. The towel was wrapped with plastic bag to prevent aroma leakage and retain heat. The treatment was applied the towel for 20 minutes, three times a day for 3 weeks. The control group (n=24) was not given any treatment. Data were collected using a VAS(100mm) for pain, questionnaire for sleep and depression, and a goniometer for knee flexibility. The data were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$-test and t-test using SPSS/Win18.0. Results: There were significant differences in knee pain (p=.001) and flexibility (p<.001), subjective quality of sleep (p=.020) and depression (p=.003) between the groups. Conclusion: Heat therapy combined with aromatherapy may be an effective nursing intervention and self-care technique to ameliorate pain and depression and to improve flexibility and sleep in elderly suffering from osteoarthritis.

  • In order to prove the sedative, anticonvulsive effects of Incenses and to identify the effect of this medicine to cerebral glutamic acid and GABA density in experimental animal. we used Incense which was made of traditional herb medicines. We also examined what kind of material is to be involved in biosynthesis of these elements. In addition we experimented to find out synthesis of active GABA-T. Incenses were inhaled 8 hours a day for 4 weeks to mice. Finally we have following results. On the convulsion induced by pentylenetetrazole(PTZ), Incenses showed significant anticonvulsive effect. Density of glutamic acid in brain was significantly decreased. On the contrary, density of GABA was significantly increased. The Activity of GABA- T in brain was significantly reduced. The quantity of lipid peroxide in the brain was significantly decreased. Activity of xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase were significantly reduced in brain. From the above results, we confirmed that Incenses decreased the density of glutamic acid, increased GABA density and decreased the activity of GABA- T in brain. For the convulsion which was induced by PTZ, Incenses showed significant anticonvulsive effect. With this we can recognize that Incenses had ability to control the quantity of lipid peroxide in brain. In the conclusion, Incenses has significant anticonvulsive effect, so I strongly recommend to prescribe Incenses to treat convulsive disorder like epilepsy.
