  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of the aroma therapy of three kinds of aroma oil mixtures on asthma. 1. The percentage of granulocytes/lymphocytes population in mouse OVA-induced asthma lung cells was decreased significantly compared with those of control group. 2. The number of CCR3+ cells, CD4+ cells, CD8+ cells, CD23 and CD3e+/CD69+ in lungs of the mice group treated with M1 were decreased significantly compared with those of control group. 3. The number of IgE+/B220+ cells in the lungs of the mice group treated with M1 decreased significantly compared with those of control group. But the number of B220+ cells in the lunes of the mice group treated with M1 didn't show significant difference compared with those of control group. 4. The number of Gr-1+/CD11b+ cells in lungs of the mice group treated with M1 didn't show significant difference compared with those of control group. • The purpose of this study was to determine whether aromatherapy massages with manual lymph drainage (MLD) are significantly more effective than sham massages with MLD in reducing edematous limb volume in lymphedema. This study was performed on 46 patients who had developed unilateral upper or lower lymphedema. Twenty-three patients served as the experimental group and were treated with complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP) applications including aroma massages with MLD, multi layered compression bandages, remedial exercises and skin care. Twenty-three patients in the control group were treated with CDP applications including sham massages with MLD, bandages, exercises and skin care. Patients undergo a therapy program once a day; 5 days a week for 2 weeks. Percentage excess volume (PEV) and body mass index (BMI) were recorded before and after treatment. PEV and BMI were significantly decreased before and after treatment in the experimental as well as in the control groups (p<.05). However, the percentage excess volume and BMI were not significantly improved after treatment between the two groups (p>.05). This study there suggests that aroma massages is not effective in the edema of patients with lymphedema.

Also the change of patients' accompanying symptoms after aroma massage were analyzed using a structured questionnaire. Results: Pain Intensity decreased in the aroma group compared with control group (VAS changes $-0.83{\pm}1.01\;vs\;0.38{\pm}0.86$, P=0.005). The numbers of accompanying symptoms (P=0.044), depression score (P=0.001) and anxiety score (P=0.008) were significantly decreased in the aroma group, while in control group they increased after 2 weeks. However, the stress score showed no significant changes in both groups ($0.05{\pm}0.85\;vs\;0.04{\pm}0.20$, P=0.1519). The depression, anxiety and stress score showed negative correlation with compliance of aroma massage, but statistically no significant. The systolic blood pressure was a little increased in aroma group ($4.53{\pm}14.43\;vs\;0.0{\pm}7.22$, P=0.026), but was not significant clinically. Patients in the aroma group complained of several symptoms such as headache (20%), paresthesia (6.75%) and nausea (6.7%). However, there were no drop-out patients for those side effects. The experiment was conducted once a week for four weeks, and the cortisol concentration in saliva was analyzed for the outcome measurement. As a result, average stress index was 3.97 which showed a high value, and the cortisol concentration of the subjects after the experiment decreased significantly (p<0.05), and especially subjects who were married and had caregiving responsibility showed more changes in their cortisol concentration. The above result shows that dry relax massage using aroma is highly effective for mind and body relaxation of women in their 30s to 40s who are significantly stressed. If such beauty measures are applied properly, it is judged to be helpful for managing the stress.
