향기흡입이 항암 화학요법 환자의 오심·구토와 식욕부진에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Aroma Oil Inhalation on Nausea·Vomiting and Anorexia in Cancer Patients Receiving Chemotherapy)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aroma oil inhalation using peppermint and bergamot on nausea vomiting and anorexia in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Method: Study subjects were 30 patients who had experienced nausea and vomiting when they had been hospitalized in K university hospital located in D city after receiving more than two Cisplatin combination chemotherapy treatments. Among them 15 patients were in the experimental group doing aroma oil inhalation and the other 15 patients were in the control group without aroma oil inhalation. The data were collected from February 1, 2002 to May 17, 2002. The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 program using frequency, percentage, $x^2$-test, t-test, Repeated Measures ANOVA. Result: 1) The degree of nausea and vomiting in the experimental group with aroma oil inhalation using peppermint and bergamot were significantly lower than that of the control group. 2) The degree of anorexia in the experimental group with aroma oil inhalation using peppermint and bergamot were significantly lower than that of the control group. Conclusion: aroma oil inhalation was effective for relieving patients' nausea vomiting and anorexia receiving chemotherapy. Therefore, it is proposed that aroma oil inhalation should be applied as a supportive nursing arbitration method to relieve patients' nausea vomiting and anorexia who are receiving chemotherapy.

아로마 향흡입요법이 대장내시경 검사 환자의 불안에 미치는 효과 (Effect of Aroma Oil Inhalation on the Anxiety of Colonoscopy Patients)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of aroma oil inhalation using lavender mixed with bergamot, and sandalwood oil in the ratio of 3:2:1 to the anxiety of colonoscopy patients. Method: The research design was a nonequivalent control group pre-post time experimental research. The data were collected from December, 2004 to March 2005. The total subjects were 60 patients who received colonoscopy at K-hospital in Chuncheon City. An aroma oil inhalation group inhaled for 10 min the mixed aroma oil, 3 drops of which were dropped on the gauze, 20 min before colonoscopy. Result: The anxiety of the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p=.001). The degree of systolic blood pressure on the intervention group was significantly lower than that of the control group (p=.031). There was no significant difference between the 2 groups in the diastolic pressure (p=.065). Pulse has no significant difference between the aroma oil inhalation and control group (p=.546). Conclusion: The result showed that aroma oil inhalation before colonoscopy has an effect on decreasing anxiety. Thus, the intervention with aroma oil inhalation can be used for relieve anxiety of patients for colonoscopy.

  • Purpose: The study was done to analyze the effects of aroma inhalation method on preoperative anxiety of abdominal surgical patients. Methods: The research design was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The data were collected from July 25 to October 21, 2005 at C Medical Center in Seoul. The patients were divided into two group of 24 subjects each. In order for measuring the all patient's anxiety before operation and aroma inhalation, Spidlberger(1975) trait anxiety, VAS(visual analogue scale) state anxiety, blood pressure, pulse rate were taken. After experimental group was taken aroma inhalation, VAS state anxiety, blood pressure, pulse rate were measured for two group. Results: After aroma inhalation, VAS state anxiety level, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, pulse rate of the experimental group were decreased significantly than those of control group(p = .000, p = .000, p = .030. p = .000). Conclusion: The aroma inhalation method can be considered an effective nursing intervention that relieves the preoperative anxiety of abdominal surgical patients and stabilizes vital signs.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of aroma inhalation on stress responses (physical symptoms, levels of anxiety, perceived stresses)of nursing students. Method: This study was a quasi-experimental research using anon-equivalent pre-post design and was conducted from June 1 to June 5, 2002. The subjects consisted of 77 junior nursing students who were divided into 39 experimental group members and 38 control group members. A pretest and Post-test were conducted to measure body symptoms, the level of anxiety, and the level of perceived stress. In the experimental group, aromas were given using an aroma lamp, lavender, peppermint, rosemary and Clary-Sage. In the control group, the treatment was not administered. Result: As a result of administering aroma inhalation to nursing students, their physical symptoms decreased, their anxiety scores were low, and their perceived stress scores were low, showing that aroma inhalation could be a very effective stress management method. Conclusion: Nursing educators should play an important role in contributing to college students' physical and psychological health by helping enhance their recognition of stress management and effectively relieving their stress using essential oils.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aromatherapy on stress, fatigue, mood, and vital signs of the nurses in the operating rooms. Methods: The data were collected from September 2007 to February 2008 in the operating room at K hospital located in Seoul, Korea. A total of 48 nurses were recruited. Among them, 25 nurses were randomly assigned to an experimental group and 23 were assigned to a control group. Experimental group was provided with aroma inhalation by necklace which had essential oil mixture of 0.2 cc. For aroma inhalation, Lavender, Zeranium and Mazoram were mixed in ratio of 5:3:2. In order to test the effectiveness of aroma inhalation, the pretest and posttest results for stress, fatigue, mood, and vital signs were compared between the experimental group and the control group. The data were analyzed by unpaired t-test and ANCOVA using the SPSS/WIN 15.0 program. Results: There were statistically significant decreases in the stress and fatigue scores, and increase in the mood scores and showed significant relaxation in the vital signs after the aroma inhalation. Conclusion: The aromatherapy had the positive effects on stress, fatigue, mood, and vital signs.

Effects of Aroma Inhalation on Fatigue and Sleep Quality of Postpartum Mothers

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of aroma inhalation on fatigue and quality of sleep of postpartum mothers. Method: The study design was a non-equivalent control group pre-post design. 51 Postpartum mothers were assigned either to a control group or to an experimental group that was exposed to aromas through inhalation for 6 days. Subjects in the experimental group were instructed to wear a necklace filled with Lavender and Eucalyptus oil from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM every day. Fatigue was measured using the Rhoten Fatigue Scale. Sleep duration, night arousal frequency and sleep satisfaction were used to assess the quality of sleep. Result: There was a significant difference in the score of fatigue following the treatment between the experimental and control groups (t=-2.79 p=.00). However, there was no significant difference in sleep duration, frequency of night arousal and sleep satisfaction following aroma inhalation between two groups. Conclusion: This intervention appears to be effective in reducing the fatigue in postpartum mothers.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of aroma inhalation on nursing students stress responses and anxiety before their first clinical practice. Method: Data were collected during the period from March 5 to March 10, 2007 at K College in a province. There were seventy eight subjects, 35 for the experimental group and 38 for the control group. Aroma oils used were lavender, peppermint and rosemary. Before and after the treatment, the severity of stress and anxiety were evaluated by VAS and a questionnaire. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test and $\chi^2$-test with the SPSS program. Result: The score of subjective stress (VAS) decreased significantly after aroma inhalation(p=.000), but status anxiety was not significantly different between the two groups (p=.649). Conclusion: Aroma inhalation can be a useful intervention to reduce nursing student's stress before their first clinical practice.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of aroma inhalation therapy on nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, compliance, and colon cleansing for patients having a colon lavage solution before colonoscopy. Methods: This study was performed using a nonequivalent control group post-test design. The study was conducted from 20 Jun to 29 Aug, 2011. The participants were 152 patients (experimental group: 77, control group: 75) who underwent colonoscopy at A hospital, Seoul. Results: The experimental group with the aroma inhalation therapy reported significantly lower nausea and vomiting than did the control group. There were no significant differences in abdominal discomfort, compliance, and colon cleansing between experimental and control group. Conclusion: Use of an aroma inhalation therapy was efficient in nausea and vomiting among patients having a colon lavage solution before colonoscopy. Therefore, aroma inhalation therapy is recommended as an effective nursing intervention for relieving nausea and vomiting among patients having a lavage solution before colonoscopy.

아로마 요법이 편도선 절제술 환자의 통증에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Aroma Inhalation Therapy on Pain in Patients Following a Tonsillectomy)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the effects of aroma inhalation therapy on pain post tonsillectomy. Method: A non-equivalent control group pre- and post-test design was used. The research instruments used in this study were a pain perception measurement and vital signs (systolic & diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate levels). Twenty-five patients in the experimental group went through aroma inhalation therapy for ten minutes after the tonsillectomy. The aroma inhalation therapy used was a blended oil, a mixture of Lavender and Loman chamomile in the ratio of 2:1. The 25 patients in the control group did not receive the therapy. Before and after the experiment, both groups were tested for pain (pain perception and vital signs). Collected data were processed with the SPSS WIN. Ver. 14.0 program and analyzed using frequencies, percentages, ${\chi}^2$-test, Fisher's exact test, t-test and ANCOVA. Results: Pain perception of patients was not significantly reduced. However systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate were significantly reduced. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that aroma inhalation is a partially effective nursing intervention to reduce the post-operative tonsillectomy pain.
