Sand particle-Induced deterioration of thermal barrier coatings on gas turbine blades

  • Gas turbines operating in dusty or sandy environment polluted with micron-sized solid particles are highly prone to blade surface erosion damage in compressor stages and molten sand attack in the hot-sections of turbine stages. Commercial/Military fixed-wing aircraft engines and helicopter engines often have to operate over sandy terrains in the middle eastern countries or in volcanic zones; on the other hand gas turbines in marine applications are subjected to salt spray, while the coal-burning industrial power generation turbines are subjected to fly-ash. The presence of solid particles in the working fluid medium has an adverse effect on the durability of these engines as well as performance. Typical turbine blade damages include blade coating wear, sand glazing, Calcia-Magnesia-Alumina-Silicate (CMAS) attack, oxidation, plugged cooling holes, all of which can cause rapid performance deterioration including loss of aircraft. The focus of this research work is to simulate particle-surface kinetic interaction on typical turbomachinery material targets using non-linear dynamic impact analysis. The objective of this research is to understand the interfacial kinetic behaviors that can provide insights into the physics of particle interactions and to enable leap ahead technologies in material choices and to develop sand-phobic thermal barrier coatings for turbine blades. This paper outlines the research efforts at the U.S Army Research Laboratory to come up with novel turbine blade multifunctional protective coatings that are sand-phobic, sand impact wear resistant, as well as have very low thermal conductivity for improved performance of future gas turbine engines. The research scope includes development of protective coatings for both nickel-based super alloys and ceramic matrix composites.

내추락성 요구도 개정을 위한 미 육군 헬기 사고사례 분석 고찰 (Review on U.S. Army Helicopter Mishap Analysis for Revision of Crashworthiness Requirements)

  • 군용 헬기 내추락성 설계를 위한 대표적인 기준문서는 MIL-STD-1290 및 항공기 추락생존 설계지침서(ACSDG)로서, 두 문서가 최종 개정된 것은 1980년대이다. 다양한 미 육군 헬기 사고사례 분석결과를 감안할 때, 신규 개발 항공기에 적용하기 위한 적절한 내추락성 설계지침서는 존재하지 않는다고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 새로운 내추락성 설계기준(FSCC)의 근거를 제공한 미 육군 연구개발사령부(RDECOM) 주관으로 수행된 미 육군 헬기 사고 분석결과를 고찰하고 재정리하였다. 이 분석에서는 군용 헬기 추락사고의 결과들을 체계적으로 분석하고 정량화함으로써 새로운 설계기준문서의 정량적 기준을 제공하였다.

육군 항공기류 UHF 대역 송수신기 CE101 시험 (The CE101 Test of the Army Aircraft's UHF Band Transceiver)

  • 육군 항공기류의 UHF 대역 송수신기는 규격인 MIL-STD-461F Figure CE101-4를 만족해야 한다. 항공기에 장착되는 장비이므로, 소모전력 최소화 및 주파수 간섭 최소화에 중점을 두고 장비를 설계하였다. 장비 설계 후 CE101 시험을 진행하면서 문제가 발생되었던 부분은 30 Hz에서 1 kHz에서 100 dBuA 규격 이상의 신호가 발생하였고, 발생된 신호는 송수신기에서 방사되는 10 W, 20 ms 단위의 $T_{DD}$ 50 Hz 신호로 분석되었다. 규격 만족을 위해 전류변화량을 줄여야 한다는 시험 결과를 토대로 출력증폭기의 $I_{dq}$$I_d$ 값을 유사하게 수정하였고, 기존 설계의 소모 전력과 주파수 간섭과 크게 차이가 없게 설계 및 제작하였다.

무인항공기시스템 사고요인 분석을 통한 안전 운용방안 고찰 (A Study on the Safety Management of UAS by Analyzing Its Accident Factors)

  • This study investigated the accident cases of the U.S. Air Force and the R.O.K. Army. It analyzed the accident factors of the unmanned aircraft system using case analysis on unmanned aircraft system operators of the R.O.K. Air Force. Following the analysis this paper suggested safety operation plans for the R.O.K. Air Force. The risk factors of unmanned aircraft system were summarized by collecting and analyzing accident cases of unmanned aircraft system by the U.S. Air Force, collecting and analyzing accident risk factors of RQ-4 operators of the R.O.K. Air Force. Through the analyzed risk factors, a safety operation plan for the semi-automatic unmanned aircraft system and the fully automatic unmanned aircraft system was presented.

AHP 기법을 이용한 Army TIGER 부대 공격용 드론의 작전요구성능 선정에 관한 기초 연구 (A Basic Study on the Selection of Required Operational Capability for Attack Drones of Army TIGER Units Using AHP Technique)

  • The importance of each warfighting function for Army TIGER unit attack drones is measured using the AHP technique. As a result, the importance of attack drones is high in the order of maneuver, firepower, intelligence, command/control, protection, and operation sustainment, but the importance of maneuver, firepower, and intelligence are almost similar. In addition, it is analyzed that attack drones capable of carrying out day and night missions by being equipped with an EO/IR sensor and being commanded/controlled in conjunction with the C4I system to eliminate threats with small bombs or aircraft collisions is needed. Finally, based on the results of this study, a virtual battle scenario for attack drones is proposed.

  • 최신 항공기에는 항공기의 건전성을 확인하기 위한 진동데이터 수집 장비가 장착되는 경우가 많다. 이러한 장비를 통해 수집되는 진동 데이터의 분석은 항공기 설계에 정통한 전문가에 의존하는 것이 일반적이며, 설계 분석을 통해 일반 사용자를 위한 대표적이고 객관적인 결함식별 기준을 제시하는 것은 쉽지 않다. 본 논문에서 우리는 기존의 항공기 설계분석 방법이 아닌, 운용 중 수집되는 방대한 양의 진동 데이터에 주성분 분석을 적용하는 방식으로 기동 및 결함유형 식별이 가능한지를 확인하였다. 이를 위해 국내 육군에서 실운용중인 항공기의 진동 데이터를 실측하여 기동 및 결함 유형별로 분류하였고, 분류된 데이터에 주성분 분석 기법을 적용하였다. 그 결과 설계 분석을 하지 않고도 운용 데이터 분석만을 통하여 일반 사용자들을 위한 기동/결함유형 식별 도구의 개발이 가능함이 확인되었다.

  • Investigations of the commercial aircraft impact effect on nuclear island infrastructures have been drawing extensive attention, and this paper aims to perform the safety assessment of Generation III nuclear power plant (NPP) buildings subjected to typical commercial aircrafts crash. At present Part I, finite element (FE) models establishment and validations for both the aircrafts and NPP buildings are performed. (i) Airbus A320 and A380 aircrafts are selected as the representative medium and large commercial aircrafts, and the corresponding fine FE models including the skin, beam, fuel and etc. are established. By comparing the numerically derived impact force time-histories with the existing published literatures, the rationality of aircrafts models is verified. (ii) Fine FE model of the Chinese Zhejiang Sanao NPP buildings is established, including the detailed structures and reinforcing arrangement of both the containment and auxiliary buildings. (iii) By numerically reproducing the existing 1/7.5 scaled aircraft model impact tests on steel plate reinforced concrete (SC) panels and assessing the impact process and velocity time-history of aircraft model, as well as the damage and the maximum deflection of SC panels, the applicability of the existing three concrete constitutive models (i.e., K&C, Winfrith and CSC) are evaluated and the superiority of Winfrith model for SC panels under deformable missile impact is verified. The present work can provide beneficial reference for the integral aircraft crash analyses and structural damage assessment in the following two parts of this paper.

  • Investigations of the commercial aircraft impact effect on nuclear island infrastructures have been drawing extensive attention, and this paper aims to perform the safety assessment of Generation III nuclear power plant (NPP) buildings subjected to typical commercial aircrafts crash. At present Part II, based on the verified finite element (FE) models of aircrafts Airbus A320 and A380, as well as the NPP containment and auxiliary buildings in Part I of this paper, the whole collision process is reproduced numerically by adopting the coupled missile-target interaction approach with the finite element code LS-DYNA. The impact induced damage of NPP plant under four impact locations of containment (cylinder, air intake, conical roof and PCS water tank) and two impact locations of auxiliary buildings (exterior wall and roof of spent fuel pool room) are evaluated. Furthermore, by considering the inner structures in the containment and raft foundation of NPP, the structural vibration analyses are conducted under two impact locations (middle height of cylinder, main control room in the auxiliary buildings). It indicates that, within the discussed scenarios, NPP structures can withstand the impact of both two aircrafts, while the functionality of internal equipment on higher floors will be affected to some extent under impact induced vibrations, and A380 aircraft will cause more serious structural damage and vibrations than A320 aircraft. The present work can provide helpful references to assess the safety of the structures and inner equipment of NPP plant under commercial aircraft impact.

세계 항공기산업 동향과 전망 (The Trend and forecast of world Aircraft industry)

  • 세계 항공기 산업은 2001년 이후 전반적인 세계경기 회복기조 속에서 꾸준히 성장하고 있다. 9.11사태 이후 시 장 위축과 회복 그리고 유가급등과 환경에 대한 요구 증가 등 근래에 들어 과거와 다른 항공기 산업의 시장환경이 조성되었으며, 이에 따라 항공기 산업 내부에서도 완만한 변화가 이루어져 왔다. 지역 간 직접노선 수요와 비정기 항공에 대한 수요 증가는 200인승 급 대형항공기의 수요증가, 주력 중형항공기의 대형화 및 비즈니스제트기와 VLJ 수요를 촉발하였으며, 항공사간의 경쟁 심화와 유가상승 등은 더욱 효율적인 기체에 대한 요구를 증대시켰다. 군수분야에서는5세대 전투기의 개발 및 채용 확산과 함께 그 이전단계에서 기존의4세대 전투기의 수요 역시 꾸준히 이어지고 있으며, 비정규전 과정을 거치면서 무인 정찰기에 대한 수요 및 접근성이 높은 이동수단에 대한 수요가 증대하였다.
