  • The purpose of this study was three-fold: to reexamine whether periapical and central lesions can be detected on the radiograph when they are in the cancellous bone, to investigate regianal differences in radiograph visualization of the lesion, and to. compare the interpretation of radiagraphs by densitometric analysis with the visual interpretation af the same radiographs. Forty-nine apical lesions and eighty-two central lesions were made in 8 mandibles and radiographed serially while being enlarged and deepened. All radiagraphs were evaluated by three dental radiologists. Each lesion was scored of 3 to 0, based on the radiographic appearances. Special radiographs of 15 apical and central lesions were analysed by densitometer and the results were compared with the scores which were previously assigned by three examiners. From this study the following conclusians could be drawn; 1. Experimental lesions confined to cancellous bone were detected an the radiagraphs in 41.3% of the cases. 2. Visualization of periapical lesions in cancellous bone was more apparent than that of central lesions in cancellous bone. 3. Visualization of the periapical lesions confined to. cancellous bane was highest in molar teeth, and detection of the central lesions in alveolar portion was easier than those in lower portion of mandibular body area. 4. It was possible to detect the experimental lesions without cortical plate involvement in 78.6% of the all lesions. 5. Densitometric analysis of radiographs could reproducibly distinguish bone changes, especially of central lesions in cancellous bone.

  • Many gravitational wave detectors are now being built or under operation throughout the world. In particular, LIGO has taken scientific data several times, although current sensitivity is not sufficient to detect the weak signals routinely. However, the sensitivities have been improving steadily over past years so that the real detection will take place in the near future. Data analysis is another important area in detecting the gravitational wave signal. We have carried out the basic research in order to implement data analysis software in Korea@home environment. We first studied the LIGO Science Collaboration Algorithm Library(LAL) software package, and extracted the module that can generate the virtual data of gravitational wave detector. Since burst sources such as merging binaries of neutron stars and black holes are likely to be detected first, we have concentrated on the simulation of such signals. This module can generate pure gravitational wave forms, noise suitable for LIGO, and combination of the signal and noise. In order to detect the gravitational signal embedded in the noisy data, we have written a simple program that employs 'matched filtering' method which is very effective in detecting the signal with known waveform. We found that this method works extremely well.

  • This study reviewed terahertz technologies of time domain spectroscopy, T-ray imaging, and high rate wireless data transfer. The main topics of the terahertz research area were investigation of materials and package modules for terahertz wave generation and detection, and setup of the terahertz system for time domain spectroscopy(TDS), T-ray imaging and sub-THz wireless communication. In addition to Poly-GaAs film as a photoconductive switching antenna material, a table-top scale for the THz-TDS/imaging system and terahertz continuous wave(CW) generation systems for sub-THz data transfer and narrow band T-ray imaging were designed. Dielectric properties of ferroelectric BSTO($Ba_xSr_{1-x}TiO_3$) films and chalcogenide glass systems were characterized with the THz-TDS system at the THz frequency range. Package modules for terahertz wave transmitter/receiver(Tx/Rx) photoconductive antenna were developed.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial relationship between the landslides occurred by typhoon, Rusa in 2002 and geospatial dataset. Landslide locations were detected using satellite image and field survey. Topogra-phy, soil, forest, geology and land use data sets were constructed as a spatial database in GIS. From the database, slope, aspect, curvature, water system, type of topography, texture, material, drainage, effective thickness of soil, type, age, diameter, density of wood, lithology, lineament of geology, land use and lineament were used as the land-slide occurrence factors. Using a frequence ratio model, the spatial relationships between the landslides and the factors were extracted. The spatial relationships is helpful to explain the characteristics of the landslide, and to make landslide susceptibility map.

  • More than 70% of Korea consists of mountainous area and during the construction of roads and railroads many cut-slopes are inevitably formed. A number of environmental factors, such as the rainy season and frost heave during winter/thaw during spring, can result in rock falls and landslides. The failure of slopes is increasing every year and can cause damage to vehicles, personal injury and even fatality. In order to help protect people and property, there is a need for real-time monitoring systems to detect the early stages of slope failures. In this respect, the GMG has been using Translation Rotation Settlement (TRS) sensor units installed on slopes to monitor movement in real-time. However, the data lines of this system are vulnerable and the whole system can be damaged by a single lightning strike. In order to overcome this, GMG have proposed the use of Ubiquitous Sensor Networks (USN). The adoption of a USN system in lieu of data cables can help to minimize the risk of lightning damage and improve the reliability of slope monitoring systems.

  • Wireless sensor networks are used by various application areas to implement smart data processing and ubiquitous system. In the recent research of parking management system based on wireless sensor networks, adaptive sensing and efficient data processing are not considered. The effectiveness of implementing these distributed computing devices affects the performance of the applications in parking management. This paper proposes an adaptive sensing using fuzzy wireless sensor for the ubiquitous networks of parking management system. The fuzzy inference system is encoded in the sensor for efficient car presence detection. Moreover, a rule base adaptive module is proposed which wirelessly transmit the new values to each sensor for adapting the environment of car park area. The result of experiments shows that the fuzzy wireless sensor provides more throughputs and less time delays compared to a normal method of data gathering by wireless sensors.

  • This survey was conducted to monitor the current status of pesticide residues in agricultural products collected in wholesale markets and big retailers in Gwangju, in 2004. A total of 751 samples was analyzed by multiresidue method. Vegetables and fruits accounted for the largest proportion of the commodities analyzed and those two commodity groups comprised 604 $(80\%)\;and\;83\;(11\%)$ of the total number of 751 samples. Of these 751 samples, 112 samples $(14.9\%)$ had pesticide residues and 29 samples $(3.9\%)$ had violative residues. The detection rate was the highest $25\%$ in January and the lowest $9.5\%$ in June. The violation rate was the highest $7.0\%$ in March and the lowest $0\%$ in April. The violation rate in wholesale products was higher than that in big retailer products, $5.8\%$ verses $3.5\%$. And of 112 samples with pesticide residues, the agricultural product in which the pesticide residues were the most flequently detected was perilla leaf $(17.9\%)$ followed by korean lettuce $(16.1\%)$, spinach $(8.0\%)$ and korean cabbage $(5.4\%)$ and among 112 samples, 22 samples $(20\%)$ had more than one pesticide. Procymidone $(20.3\%)$, endosulfan $(18.2\%)$, dimethomorph $(13.3\%)$, chlorpyrifos $(7.7\%)$ and azoxystrobin $(6.3\%)$ were the most frequently found in agricultural product analyzed.

  • Ethyl carbamate is an animal carcinogen and a by-product of fermentation. Since the highest level of ethyl carbamate was found in a traditional soy sauce sample in the previous study, soysauce was prepared in varying experimental conditions with three kinds of meju originated from different area of the country to investigate the factors affecting ethyl carbamate formation. The sample analysis methods included a semi-purification with solid-phase extraction and detection by GC-MS at SIM mode using m/z 62 fragment ion. Among the investigated factors, which includes source meju, bringing length, salt content, irradiation of visible light during bringing or storage, and storage length, source meju and storage length showed most profound effect on the formation of ethyl carbamate. Irradiation of visible light for 12 hours a day during storage lowered the concentration of ethyl carbamate compared to the soysauce kept in the dark. Meanwhile irradiation during the bringing as well as the degree of salt contents showed no effect.

  • Trichomonad species inhabit a variety of vertebrate hosts; however, their potential zoonotic transmission has not been clearly addressed, especially with regard to human infection. Twenty-one strains of trichomonads isolated from humans (5 isolates), pigs (6 isolates), rodents (6 isolates), a water buffalo (1 isolate), a cow (1 isolate), a goat (1 isolate), and a dog (1 isolate) were collected in Indonesia and molecularly characterized. The DNA sequences of the partial 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene or 5.8S rRNA gene locus with its flanking regions (internal transcribed spacer region, ITS1 and ITS2) were identified in various trichomonads; Simplicimonas sp., Hexamastix mitis, and Hypotrichomonas sp. from rodents, and Tetratrichomonas sp. and Trichomonas sp. from pigs. All of these species were not detected in humans, whereas Pentatrichomonas hominis was identified in humans, pigs, the dog, the water buffalo, the cow, and the goat. Even when using the high-resolution gene locus of the ITS regions, all P. hominis strains were genetically identical; thus zoonotic transmission between humans and these closely related mammals may be occurring in the area investigated. The detection of Simplicimonas sp. in rodents (Rattus exulans) and P. hominis in water buffalo in this study revealed newly recognized host adaptations and suggested the existence of remaining unrevealed ranges of hosts in the trichomonad species.

  • The characteristics and behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were determined by analyzing the molecular weight fractions and fluorescence properties of water samples in the downstream Nakdong River. Biogeochemical water quality parameters and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) were analyzed at five sampling points in the downstream area of the Nakdong River January-August 2019. The molecular weight fractions of the DOM were separated by the Liquid Chromatography-Organic Carbon Detection (LC-OCD). The DOM predominantly comprised humic substances, followed by the building blocks, low molecular weight neutrals and biopolymers. The hydrophobic (aromatic) and hydrophilic properties were shown as coexisting, as most of the SUVA254nm values were under four. The FDOM was characterized as humic-like (FDOMH) with allochthonous origin and protein-like (FDOMP) with autochthonous origin; the FDOMH with autochthonous origin was also identified. The FDOMH relies on the aromaticity of the allochthonous organic matter and increases during summer. The FDOMH and FDOMP, which depend on the biodegradable dissolved organic matter from phytoplankton, were highly fluorescent in winter. The allochthonous organic matter was the dominant factor contributing to the behavior of the DOM, externally introduced to the river by rainfall. The FDOM only minimally contributed to the behavior of the DOM. It can be explained as the seasonal characteristics of the DOM, varied by the source of the organic matter.
