  • Increasing public concerns over odors and air regulations necessitates the remediation of a wide range of odor substances for industrial and indoor purpose. Currently, the wet scrubbing technique by neutralization using oils is being used to treat odor substances such as Ammonia($NH_3$), Methyl Mercaptan($CH_3SH$), Hydrogen Sulfide($H_2S$), Methylamine($CH_3NH_2$), Acetaldehyde($CH_3CHO$). The chemical analysis is performed to analyze the composition of an Arctium Lappa Root extract by VOC analyzer(Phocheck 5000Ex, ION SCIENCE co.) The objectives of the this study are to clarify the possibility of the neutralization of odors sprayed in the fixed bed and determine the removal efficiencies for different input odor concentrations. It is found that Ammonia($NH_3$), Methyl Mercaptan($CH_3SH$), Hydrogen Sulfide($H_2S$), Methylamine($CH_3NH_2$), Acetaldehyde($CH_3CHO$) are significantly removed and their removal efficiencies are higher than 98%. The kitchen detergent with Arctium Lappa Root extract showed excellent removal efficiencies of odor substances and high possibility for the development of kitchen detergent with odor removal.

  • In this study, to evaluate antioxidant activity and safety on skin of Arctium lappa L. root extract, antioxidant activity was understood through total content of polyphenol, total content of flavonoid and DPPH radical scavenging activity, and cytotoxicity for B16F10 melanoma and skin cell protection effect for ultraviolet rays A were confirmed. To verify the application as cosmetic material, the first skin patch test was performed. The result of this experiment showed that as the content of Arctium lappa L. root extract increased, the content of polyphenol and flavonoid increased, and DPPH radical scavenging activity was confirmed. The result of checking cytotoxicity for B16F10 melanoma cells showed that it had low toxicity, and over 80% cell protection effect for ultraviolet rays A was confirmed. In addition, through the first skin patch test, Arctium lappa L. root extract was confirmed to have almost no skin irritation. Through this result, Arctium lappa L. root extract is excellent in skin protection from ultraviolet rays, has low toxicity for skin cells and is safe on skin, so its possibility of being a cosmetic ingredient was verified.

  • This study was carried to investigate the antioxidative effect of ethanol extract of Arctium lappa(Al) root in Streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by intravenous injection of STZ at a dose of 45mg/kg.body wight(b.w) dissolved in citrate buffer. The ethanol extract of Al root was orally administrated once a day for 7 days at a dose of 1,000mg/kg.b.w. The contents of malondialdehyde(MDA) and activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) were significantly decreased(p<0.05) in Al treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group. The content of glutathione(GSH) and activity of glutathione-s-transferase(GST) was significantly increased(p<0.05). These results indicated that ethanol extract of Al root would have antioxidative effect in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

  • To investigate anti-thrombosis and anti-oxidation activities of the root of Arctium lappa L (RALL), which has been used as foodstuff and oriental medicine in Korea, the ethanol extract and its subsequent organic solvent fractions of the RALL were prepared. The yield of ethanol extraction was 10.94%, and the content of total polyphenol and total sugar of ethanol extract were 5.01 and 694.53 mg/g, respectively. The fraction yields of n-hexane, ethylacetate (EA), butanol and water residue were 1.62, 0.42, 5.98 and 85.38%, respectively. In anticoagulation activity assay, the ethanol extract of RALL did not show significant changes in thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), whereas the EA fractions showed 13 folds extended TT, PT, and aPTT respectively. Interestingly, the water residue showed strong activation effect against blood clotting factors with shortened aPTT, which might provide the evidence of coagulation agent of RALL in folk remedy. In anti-platelet aggregation assay, the activity of the ethanol extract and its fractions were comparable to that of aspirin. Especially the EA fraction showed 2-folds higher inhibitory activity than aspirin. In anti-oxidation activity assay, the EA fraction also showed strong in DPPH, ABTS and nitrite scavenging activity, and reducing power activity. The extract and fractions of RALL have ignorable hemolytic activity against human RBC up to 0.5 mg/mL concentration. Our results suggest that the EA fraction of RALL have potentials as safe and novel anti-thrombosis agent.
