One of the challenge for successful daylighting design might be to capture sunlighting that varies in both intensity and position and to deliver the luminous flux into the inner space as deep as possible. Conventional glazing apertures allow daylight in the outer 3.5m of a perimeter spaces. More advanced daylighting technologies can extend this daylighting depth by reflecting sunlight further from the windows within a deep floor area. For this purpose, this study developed light shelves based on performance evaluation with a mock-up model that constructed recently and measured under real sky condition. All these daylighting devices have a customized geometry developed from the solar path at a given latitude and utilize unique reflecting finishing to maximize the amount of redirection and diffusion of the daylight. This paper tells that the best daylighting penetration typically can be expected from using light-colored sloped external shelves.
Open loop geothermal heat pumps have great potential where the groundwater resources are sufficient. Performance of open loop geothermal heat pump systems is considered higher than that of ground source heat pumps. Head and power calculation of submersible pumps, heat pump units, and piping are numerically based on regression data. Results shows that the system performance drops as the water level drops, and the lowest flow rates generally achieve the highest system COPs. The highest achievable cooling system COPs become 6.34, 6.12, and 5.95 as the groundwater levels are 5m, 15m, and 25m. The highest heating system COPs also become 4.59, 4.37, and 4.20. Groundwater level and submersible pump selection greatly influence the system performance of open loop geothermal heat pumps. It needs to be analysed during the design process of open loop geothermal heat pump system, possibly with analysis tools that include wide range of pump product data.
Purpose: Quasi-steady state simulations have played a pivoting role to expand the user group of simulation to design engineers and architects in Korea. Initially they are introduced in the market as a building energy performance rating tool. In domestic practice, however, quasi-steady state simulations seem to be regarded as a de facto simulation only available for energy retrofit. Selection of ECMs and economic feasibility analysis are being decided through these tools, which implies that running these tools has become a norm step of the Investment-grade Audit. Method: This study aims at identifying issues and problems with the current practice via test cases, analyzing the reasons and opportunities, and then eventually suggesting proper uses of quasi-steady state and dynamic simulations. Result: The functionality of quasi-steady state simulations is more optimized to the rating. If they are to used for energy retrofits, their off-the-shelf functions also need to be expanded for customization and detailed reports. Yet their roles may be limited only to the go/no go decision; because their algorithms are still weak at precisely estimating energy and load savings that are required for making investment decisions compared to detailed simulations.
Purpose: Condensation in walk-in closets attached to apartment bathroom has been known as an emerging issue that may threat occupants' comfort and health. Despite a number of design guidelines and enforcements to prevent condensation, condensation issues may still occur depending on various cases and scenarios. We aim to identify what condensation scenarios may lead to walk-in closet condensation and/or worse the existing condensation issues. Method: First we choose an actual walk-in closet of an apartment that suffers from sporadic condensation and resulting mold and mildew. Then we observe its relative humidity and temperature after the bathroom is used, in which excessive vapor is thought to be transported to the walk-in closet. We analyze Temperature Difference Ratio - a domestic indicator of condensation occurrence, and dew point temperature to compare it with surface temperature using 2D heat transfer simulation upon various condensation scenarios. Result: TDR of the test walk-in closet turns out be OK despite mold and mildew actually occurring. Hot water pipe installed in the floor would greatly reduce condensation. If hot water pipe in the upper floor, however, is not used, or hot water pipe of the closet is turned off during swing seasons, it is expected that condensations may still occur.
Recently, the concept of damped outrigger system has been proposed for tall buildings. But, structural characteristics and design method of this system were not sufficiently investigated to date. In this study, the dynamic response control performance of outrigger damper has been analyzed. To this end, a simplified analysis model with outrigger damper system has been developed. Use the El Centro seismic(1940, NS) analysis was performed. Analysis results, on the top floor displacement response to the earthquake response, did not have a big effect. However, acceleration response control effect was found to be excellent. The increase of outrigger damper capacity usually results in the improved control performance. However, it is necessary to select that proper stiffness and damping values of the outrigger damper system because, the outrigger damper having large capacity is result in heavy financial burden.
Recently the construction of atrium buildings has increased but along with it many problems in thermal environment have arised. since the exterior wall of glass, indoor temperature is greatly influenced by weather conditions and since the space volume is very large, the vertical air temperature is not uniform. So, in this study, a Vertical Temperature Distribution Model was developed to predict the vertical air temperature of an atrium and evaluate the effects of the design parameters on the air temperature distribution of an atrium. To consider the characteristics of the vertical air temperature distribution in an atrium, the Satosh Togari's Macroscopic Model was used basically for the calculation of the vertical air temperature distribution in large space and the solar radiation analysis model and natural ventilation analysis model in atrium. And to calculate the unsteady-state inside wall surface temperature(boundary condition), the finite difference method was used. For the verification of the developed temperature distribution program, numerical evaluation of air flow by the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and in-situ test was conducted in parallel. The results of this study, the developed temperature distribution program was seen to predict the thermal condition of the atrium very accurately.

A total of 32 pullout tests were performed for the multiple headed bars relatively deeply embedded in reinforced concrete column-like members. The objective was to determine the minimum embedment depth that was necessary to safely design exterior beam-column joints using headed bars. The variables for the experiment were embedment depth of headed bar, center-to-center distance between adjacent heads, and amount of supplementary reinforcement. Regular strength concrete and grade SD420 reinforcing steel were used. The results of the test the indicated that a headed bar embedment depth of $10d_b$ was not sufficient to have relatively closely installed headed bars develop the pullout strength corresponding to the yield strength. All the experimental variables, influenced the pullout strength. The pullout strength increased with increasing embedment depth and head-to-head distance. It also increased with increasing amount of supplementary reinforcement. For a group of closely-spaced headed bars installed in a beam-column joint, it is recommended to use column ties at least 0.6% by volume, 1% or greater amount of column main bars, and an embedment depth of $13d_b$ or greater simultaneously, to guarantee the pullout strength of individual headed bars over 125% of $f_y$ and ductile load-displacement behavior.

The composite frame system with reinforced concrete column and steel beam can be improved in its structural efficiency by complementing the shortcomings of the two systems. The system, however, has many inherent problems in practical design and construction process due to the dissimilarities of the materials. Considering these circumstance, this research aims for the development of a composite structural system which connects the steel beams to the R/C columns with higher structural safety and economy. Basically, the proposed connection system is composed of four split tees, structural angles reinforced by a stiffener, high strength steel rods, connecting plates and shear plates. Structural tests have been carried out to investigate the moment transfer mechanism 1Tom the beam flange to steel rods or connecting plates through the structural angle reinforced by a stiffener. The four prototype specimens have been tested until the flange of the beam reached a plastic state. The test results indicated that no distinct material dissimilarities between concrete and steel have been detected for the proposed hybrid beam-column connection system and that the stress transfer through the structural angle between the beam flange and steel rods or connecting plates was very encouraging.
A new form of construction utilizing structural steel as the boundary elements in ductile flexural concrete walls is proposed to solve the bar congestion problems in such a heavily reinforced region, while maintaining the ductility and energy absorption capacity comparable to their traditional form. Two wall specimens containing rectangular hollow structural sections (HSS) and channels at their ends respectively, and one companion standard reinforced concrete wall specimen with concentrated end reinforcement were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the construction process as well as the structural performance. Initially, all three specimens were chosen and detailed with some caution to have approximately the same flexural capacity without change of the original shape and dimension of a rectangular cross section correction. Analysis and comparison of test results indicated that the reversed cyclic responses of three walls showed similar hysteretic properties, but in those with steel boundaries, local buckling of the corresponding steel webs and flanges following significant yielding was a dominant factor to determine the hysteretic response. The monotonic and cyclic responses predicted based on a sectional approach was also presented and found to be in good agreement with measured results. Design recommendations considering local instability of the structural steel elements and the interaction between steel chords and a concrete web member in such a composite wall are presented.
This research was aimed at finding clues of improving residential quality of the Urbanistic Housing which was introduced for the small household of 1-2 residents. It was the communal amenities in multi-family housing complexes that this research concentrated on. Therefore 20 Urbanistic Housing complexes and 11 regular multi-family housing complexes were chosen as the subjects, and all of them were constructed in same period of date and composed of similar number of household units. Compared varieties and design programs of the communal amenities in Urbanistic Housing complexes to those in regular multi-family housing complexes, there were noticeable differences that far less various communal amenities and bland layouts in Urbanistic Housing complexes than in regular multi-family housing complexes. To become a quality residence, it is necessary that Urbanistic Housing are also required to provide certain level of communal amenities, not as much as regular housing for regular household but much more than Quasi-housing, the minimum residence. And it should be ensured by the legal system to make it more practical.
