Development of Ultrasonic Wave Analysis Program for Effective Use of Ultrasonic Detector (초음파 탐지기의 효과적 활용을 위한 초음파 분석프로그램의 개발)

  • Portable ultrasonic detectors are useful for detection of electrical discharge phenomena like as partial discharge, corona, arching and tracking occurring in an electric system. But the general potable ultrasonic detectors have drawbacks that the results are under the influence subjective reaction of users and it is difficult to determine the type of problem by listening to sound properties and estimate results. So a new analysis method distinguishing ultrasonic characteristics is required. This paper presented ultrasonic wave analysis program to visualize ultrasonic sound of corona, arching and tracking measured by ultrasonic detector. While depending on sound properties alone can be subjective, by incorporating analytical method using the developed program, users are able to increase the accuracy of their ultrasonic diagnosis results.

The Structural Characteristics of the Temporary Cofferdam in Accordance with the Shape and Size Obtained from Numerical Analysis (유한요소 해석을 통한 형상 및 크기에 따른 가물막이 특성 검토)

  • These days the circular cross section cofferdam has been frequently used for the earth retaining structures or cut off wall such as ventilating opening, intake tower in cofferdam, shaft for emergency. By the arching effect, the circular cross section type cofferdam has more advantage than a polygon cofferdam in terms of the structural forces and moment. This paper shows the proper approach to analyze the circular cross section cofferdam using 2D Finite Element Method (FEM) for the circular stiffener (ring beam) evaluation. Besides, the various shapes of cofferdam indluding circular cross section have modeled the 3D Finite Element Mothod (FEM). The circular cross section cofferdam shows the minimum reaction force compared with the other shapes of cofferdam.

  • has been much progress in theories and construction techniques to secure the stability of the underground structures. Recently, several studios have shown that it is possible to predict the existence of discontinuities ahead of a tunnel face by analyzing 3-dimensional absolute displacements measured during tunnel excavation. This paper concentrated on the development of a methodology to predict the existence and location of the discontinuities, or the void space(abandoned mine) , by performing 3-dimensional FEM analysis and considering the stress relocation caused by arching effect during excavation. Also, this study tried to verify deformation for choosing the most suitable support system. The results of this study might provide a way of safer and economical tunnel construction by utilizing the in-situ monitoring data.

Analysis of Earth Pressure Acting on Vertical Circular Shaft Considering Aching Effect (I) - A Study on Centrifuge Model Tests - (아칭효과를 고려한 원형수직터널의 토압 특성 분석 (I) - 원심모형실험 연구 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze earth pressure acting on a circular shaft-tunnel considering arching effect by centrifuge modeling test on sands. The centrifuge testing method provides a way to model an in-situ stress state condition with a stress gradient within a laboratory specimen. A small-scale model of circular shaft-tunnel, which has a real diameter of 6.0 m and height of 15.0 m, was designed and tested twice under 75g-level. Additionally, an effect of excavation was presented by separating two segments of circular shaft wall to find behavioral properties and strength of earth pressure along with excavating ground. The test results were compared with those of the proposed earth pressure equation. The test results showed that earth pressure decreased by about 70% in comparison with existing two-dimensional earth pressure. This fact might be attributed to three-dimensional arching effects.

Earth Pressure Acting on the Cylindrical Retaining Wall of a Shaft in Cohesionless Soils : Study on the Application by Model Test (사질토 지반의 원형수직구에 설치된 흙막이벽에 작용하는 토압 : 적용성 연구)

  • It is known that the earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall in cohesionless soils is small than that acting on the retaining wall in plane strain condition due to three dimensional arching effect. In this study, the earth pressure equation considering the earth pressure decrease by horizontal and vertical arching effects, overburden, wall friction, and failure surface slope is proposed. For the purpose of verifying the applicability of proposed equation, model test is performed with apparatuses that can control wall displacement, wall friction, and wall shape ratio. Influence of each factor on the active earth pressure acting on the cylindrical retaining wall is analyzed according to the model test in constant wall displacement condition. The comparison of calculated results with measured values shows that the proposed equations satisfactorily predict the earth pressure distribution on the cylindrical retaining wall.

  • This study investigates a failure mechanism of a tunnel shotcrete lining with respect to a concentrated load due to blocky rock mass. First of all, it is carried out to survey relevant researches to shotcrete failures by literature reviews and to numerically re-investigate the failure modes of shotcrete lining given by previous researches. Through this study, the failure modes are relocated with the conditions which induce each failure mode newly proposed by this study. In addition to this, the arching shape of tunnel lining, which has not been considered in the previous research despite of inherent geometrical characteristics in tunnels, is taken into consideration in numerical investigation on lining failure in this study. As a result, it is shown that more simplified failure modes can be found on the tunnel boundary condition and the corresponding failure condition to each mode can be different from ones of the previous study due to a tunnel arching effect.

Behavior of the Ground in Obliquely Crossed area Due to Tunnel Excavation Under the Existing Tunnel (기존터널에 근접하여 경사로 교차되는 하부터널굴착에 따른 교차부지반의 거동)

  • The behaviors of the ground in crossed zone and the existing upper tunnel in shallow cover due to the excavation of new lower tunnel crossed to that was studied. Model test was performed in the large scale test pit, the size was '$4.0m(width){\times}3.8m(height){\times}4.1m(length)$'. Test ground was constructed uniformly by sand in middle density and test with the crossed angle of $56^{\circ}$ (obliquely) were performed. The numerical analysis was performed on equal condition with model test. Results of the study by model test and numerical analysis show that earth pressure and settlement of the ground in crossed zone were redistributed due to the longitudinal arching effect by the excavation of lower tunnel. Model test shows that upper tunnel blocks stress flow due to the longitudinal arching effect by excavation of lower tunnel.

  • The earth pressure acting on a circular shaft wall is smaller than that acting on the wall in plane strain condition due to the three dimensional axi-symmetric arching effect. Accurate estimation of the earth pressure is required for the design of the shaft wall. In this study, the stress model considering the decrease of earth pressure due to the horizontal and vertical arching effect and the influence of shape ratio (shaft height/radius) is proposed. In addition, model test on the sandy soil is conducted and a comparison is made between the stress model and the test results. The comparison shows that the proposed stress model is in agreement with test results; decrease of shape ratio (increase of radius) leads to stress state equal to the plane strain condition and approximate stress distribution is found between stress model and model test results.

Laboratory Model Tests on the Load Transfer in Geosynthetic-Reinforced and Pile-Supported Embankment System (토목섬유보강 성토지지말뚝시스템에서의 하중전이 효과에 관한 모형실험)

  • A series of model tests were performed to investigate the load transfer by soil arching in geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported(GRPS) embankment systems. In the model tests, model piles with isolated cap were inserted in the model container and geosynthetics was laid on the pile caps below sand fills. The settlement of soft ground was simulated by rubber form. The loads acting on pile caps and the tensile strain of geosynthetics were monitored by data logging system. At the given interval ratio of pile caps, the efficiency in GRPS embankment systems increased with increasing the height of embankment fills, then gradually converged at constant value. Also, at the given height of embankment fills, the efficiency decreased with increasing the pile spacing. The embankment loads transferred on pile cap by soil arching increased when the geosynthetics installed with piles. This illustrated that reinforcing with the geosynthetics have a good effect to restraint the movement of surrounding soft grounds. The load transfer in GRPS embankment systems was affected by the interval ratio, height of fills, properties of grounds and tensile stiffness and so on.

  • Recently pile-supported embankments have emerged as an optimum method when the rapid construction and strict deformation of structures are required on soft soils. Especially geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported (GRPS) embankments are used worldwide as they can provide economic and effective solutions. However the load transfer mechanism in GRPS embankments is very complex, and not yet fully understood. Particularly the purpose and effect of geosynthetic inclusion are ambiguous and considered as an auxiliary measure assisting the arching effect of piles. Numerical parametric study using 3D finite element method has been conducted to investigate the effect of geosynthetic reinforcement on the load transfer mechanism of GRPS embankments. Numerical results suggested that as more stiffer geosynthetic is included, arching effect decreases considerably and the load concentration to the piles mostly caused by tension effect of geosynthetic. This finding is contradictory to the common understanding that geosynthetic inclusion only enhance the efficiency of load transfer. Consequently the design parameters determined from the numerical analyses are compared with those of three existing design methods. The problems of the existing methods are discussed.
