  • MIAB welding method uses a rotating arc as its heat source and is known to be efficient in pipe butt welding. The arc is rotated around the weld line by the electro-magnetic force resulting from the interaction of arc current and magnetic field. This paper is concerned with the experiment of initial stage for process control, monitoring for weld quality, and the design of coil system which is efficient of flux generation and concentration. A coil system for the generation of magnetic flux was designed and constructed. Magnetic flux density and arc rotating behavior are important factors in MIAB welding, so the relations between these factors and process parameters were investigated. Various experiments were performed for the steel pipes(48.1mm O.D and 2.0mm thickness). The magnetic flux density is increased by increasing exciting current and decreasing gap size. The maximum of arc rotating frequency is affected by exciting current and gap size. However, the variations of arc rotating frequency during welding and then the melting process are mainly influenced by welding current. Thus, it is considered that the results of this study can be used as important data on the monitoring for weld quality and the design of efficient coil system.

  • The modified arc-length algorithms for the automatic incremental solution of nonlinear finite element equations proposed by Riks are presented, which comprise the cylindrical arc-length method and the normal arc-length method. These methods are developed to trace the nonlinear path of large displacement problems such as a pre and post bucking/collapse response of general structures. These methods are applied to analyse the nonlinear behavior of arch and shell problems in parallel with the standard and modified Newton-Raphson method.

  • This paper deals with numerical efficiency of nonlinear solution technique for space trusses. It will propose the combined Arc-length method to trace structural behavior after reaching buckling load as opposed to the current Arch-length method. The combined Arc-length method uses the current stiffness parameter as a control variable. It uses Secant-Newton method in stable path and applies Arc-length method in unstable path. To evaluate efficiency of solution technique, the accuracy of solution, convergence, and computing time concerning illustrative numerical examples are compared with the current Arc-length method. It show that the combined Arc-length method, as proposed in this paper, is superior to the current Arc-length method in numerical nonlinear analysis.

  • This paper aims to study the large deflections of variable-arc-length elastica subjected to the terminal forces (e.g., axial force and torque). Based on Kirchhoff's rod theory and with help of Euler parameters, the set of nonlinear governing differential equations which free from the effect of singularity are established together with boundary conditions. The system of nonlinear differential equations is solved by using the shooting method with high accuracy integrator, seventh-eighth order Runge-Kutta with adaptive step-size scheme. The error norm of end conditions is minimized within the prescribed tolerance ($10^{-5}$). The behavior of VAL elastica is studied by two processes. One is obtained by applying slackening first. After that keeping the slackening as a constant and then the twist angle is varied in subsequent order. The other process is performed by reversing the sequence of loading in the first process. The results are interpreted by observing the load-deflection diagram and the stability properties are predicted via fold rule. From the results, there are many interesting aspects such as snap-through phenomenon, secondary bifurcation point, loop formation, equilibrium configurations and effect of variable-arc-length to behavior of elastica.

  • Shielded metal arc welding, one-ploe and two-pole submerged arc welding were accomplished to investigate microstructure changes on phase transformation behavior in $60kg/mm^2$ quenched and tempered high strength steel. Microstructures were examined by optical micrograph and TEM. In shielded metal arc welding (oxygen 250ppm), the inclusions were small size (0.3-0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$)and small in number. In submerged arc welding (oxygen 430-529ppm), the inclusions were larger(0.7-2$\mu\textrm{m}$) than that of shielded metal arc welding and large in number. Microstructure mainly depends on number and distribution of inclusions in fusion zone of weld metal. It was noticed that a limited number of inclusions favors the formation of acicular ferrite.

  • The problem of very large deflection of a circular cantilever arc device subjected to inward or outward polar force is studied. An exact elliptic integral solution is derived for the two cases and the results are checked using large displacement finite element analysis via the ANSYS package by performing a new novel modeling simulation technique for this problem. Excellent agreements have been obtained between the exact analytical solution and the numerical approach. From this study, a design chart for engineers is developed to predict the required value for the inward polar force for the device to switch on for a given angle forming the circular arc (${\theta}_o$). This study has several interesting applications in mechanical engineering, integrated circuit technology, nanotechnology and especially in microelectromechanical systems (MEMs) such as a MEM circular device switch subjected to attractive or repulsive magnetic forces due to the attachments of two magnetic poles at the fixed and at the free end of the circular cantilever arc switch device.

  • For the improvement of an adaptive SPAR(Single-Phase Auto-Reclosure) and novel protection schemes, it is important to simulate arc faults. But, it is difficult to reproduce the real arc behaviour, i.e. the extinction phenomenon exactly by computer simulations due to extremely random behavior of secondary arc. This paper proposes a new computer modeling techniques for the primary and the secondary arc separately, which can be implemented with EMTP MODELS routine, and the performance of the proposed model is simulated on a typical 154 [kV] korean transmission line system.

  • This study is performed to evaluate the flexural performance of reinforced concrete columns with electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates. Electric arc furnace slag is a by-product obtained from the process of refining scrap steel. The electric arc furnace slag can be used as a concrete aggregate, because it mainly consists of CaO and $SiO_2$, similar to natural rocks and minerals. Three rectangular columns with various types of aggregate were cast to test in flexure. All of the test specimens had a cross-section of $250{\times}250$mm and a height of 1,500 mm in test region. The specimens were designed to apply reversed cyclic antisymmetric moment and constant axial force. The experimental results showed that the specimens with electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates had superior flexural performance than the specimen with natural aggregates.

  • A series of model tests is performed to evaluate the relationship between soil and a buried pipe in soil undergoing lateral movement. As the result of the model tests, a wedge zone and plastic flow zones could be observed in front of the pipe. And also an arc failure of cylindrical cavity could be observed at both upper and lower zones. Failure shapes in both cohesionless and cohesive soils are nearly same, which was investigated failure angle of $45^{\circ}+{\phi}/2$. In the cohesionless soil, the higher relative density produces the larger arc of cylindrical cavity. On the basis of failure mode observed from model tests, the lateral earth pressure acting on a buried pipe in soil undergoing lateral movement could be applying the cylindrical cavity extension mode. The deformation behavior of soils was typically appeared in three divisions, which are elastic zones, plastic zones and pressure behavior zones.
