In this paper, we study the computation of the electric field of dielectric analysis models with the conductivity on its surface. The finite element formulation describes a sinusoidal electrodynamic field computation. One term is added to this functional in order to take the conductivity on its surface into accounts. The electric field computations of the dielectric analysis model are done first with the surface conductivity and second with the volume conductivity. Also, it is shown that a surface conductor with sufficiently large conductivity can be substituted with a floating equipotential line. This method is applied to an insulator in arbitrary shape with the conductivity on its surface.

This paper presents the identification of rotor dynamic parameters. The solution of the system equation can be obtained using least square method. The sensitivity analysis is performed to extract optimized solution, which is considered to be insensitive to inherent measurement errors. The cosine and sine term of orbit shapes can be obtain ed through the by experiment of the orbit analysis at a different speed after doing orbit analysis at an arbitrary selected speed. This values measured time domain are used to search the stiffness and damping coefficients of rotor bearing.

A new formulation of the non-dimensional dynamic influence function method, which is a type of the meshless method, is introduced to extract highly accurate eigenvalues of clamped plates with arbitrary shape. Originally, the final system matrix equation of the method, which was introduced by the author in 1999, does not have a form of algebraic eigenvalue problem unlike FEM. As the result, the non-dimensional dynamic influence function method requires an inefficient process to extract eigenvalues. To overcome this weak point, a new approach for clamped plates is proposed in the paper and the validity and accuracy is shown in verification examples.

In this study, a clustering algorithm that uses DCT transformed data is presented. The algorithm is a grid density-based clustering algorithm that can identify clusters of arbitrary shape. Streaming data are transformed and reconstructed as needed for clustering. Experimental results show that DCT is able to approximate a data distribution efficiently using only a small number of coefficients and preserve the clusters well. The grid based clustering algorithm works well with DCT transformed data, demonstrating the viability of DCT for data stream clustering applications.
In this paper, we present a new method to calculate interface warping functions for the analysis of beams with geometric and material discontinuities in the longitudinal direction. The classical Saint Venant torsion theory is extended to a three-dimensional domain by considering the longitudinal direction. The interface warping is calculated by considering both adjacent cross-sections of a given interface. We also propose a finite element procedure to simultaneously calculate the interface warping function and the corresponding twisting center. The calculated interface warping functions are employed in the continuum-mechanics based beam formulation to analyze arbitrary shape cross-section beams with longitudinal discontinuities. Compared to the previous work by Yoon and Lee (2014a), both geometric and material discontinuities are considered with fewer degrees of freedom and higher accuracy in beam finite element analysis. Through various numerical examples, the effectiveness of the proposed interface warping function is demonstrated.

A mathematical model for the analysis of roll gap phenomena in strip temper rolling process is described. The mechanical peculiarities of temper rolling process, such as high friction value and non-circular contact arc, low reduction and non-negligible entry and exit elastic zones as well as central restricted deformation (preliminary displacement or sticking) zone etc., are all taken into account. The deformation of work rolls is calculated with the influence function method and arbitrary contact arc shape is permitted. The strip deformation is modeled by slab method and the entry and exit elastic deformation zones are included. The restricted deformation zone near the neutral point is also considered. The concept and the calculation method of limiting preliminary displacement are used to determine the length of the central restricted deformation zone. The comparison of the model results with the measured mill data is also made.

The receptance method was applied for the analysis of a cylindrical shell with a spherical cap attached at an arbitrary axial position of the shell. The boundary condition of the shell considered here was clamped-free condition. Before the analysis of the shell/spherical cap combined structure, natural frequencies of the cap and the shell were calculated separately and then they were used in the calculation of the frequencies of the combined structure by the receptance method. This paper presents a two-step, semi-automated method for reconstructing a three-dimensional (3D) shape of the prostate from a 3D transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) image. While the method has been developed for prostate ultrasound imaging, it can potentially be applicable to any other organ of the body and other imaging modalities. The proposed method takes as input a 3D TRUS image and generates a watertight 3D surface model of the prostate. In the first step, the system lets the user visualize and navigate through the input volumetric image by displaying cross sectional views oriented in arbitrary directions. The user then draws partial/full contours on selected cross sectional views. In the second step, the method automatically generates a watertight 3D surface of the prostate by fitting a deformable spherical template to the set of user-specified contours. Since the method allows the user to select the best cross-sectional directions and draw only clearly recognizable partial or full contours, the user can avoid time-consuming and inaccurate guesswork on where prostate contours are located. By avoiding the usage of noisy, incomprehensible portions of the TRUS image, the proposed method yields more accurate prostate shapes than conventional methods that demand complete cross-sectional contours selected manually, or automatically using an image processing tool. Our experiments confirmed that a 3D watertight surface of the prostate can be generated within five minutes even from a volumetric image with a high level of speckles and shadow noises.
We propose a method for tree-inspired chair modeling that can generate a tree-branch pattern in the skeleton of an arbitrary chair shape. Unlike existing methods that merge multiple-input models, the proposed method requires only one mesh as input, namely the contour mesh of the user's desired part, to model the chair with a branch pattern generated by tree-growth simulation. We propose a new method for the efficient extraction of the contour-mesh region in the tree-branch pattern. First, we extract the contour mesh based on the face area of the input mesh. We then use the front and back mesh information to generate a skeleton mesh that reconstructs the connection information. In addition, to obtain the tree-branch pattern matching the shape of the input model, we propose a three-way tree-growth simulation method that considers the tangent vector of the shape surface. The proposed method reveals a new type of furniture modeling by using an existing furniture model and simple parameter values to model tree branches shaped appropriately for the input model skeleton. Our experiments demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed method.
The method of cross-section analysis for different sections in a structural frame has been widely investigated since the 1960s for determination of sectional capacities of beam-columns. Many hand-calculated equations and design graphs were proposed for the specific shape and type of sections in pre-computer age decades ago. In design of many practical sections, these equations may be uneconomical and inapplicable for sections with irregular shapes, leading to the high construction cost or inadequate safety. This paper not only proposes a versatile numerical procedure for sectional analysis of beam-columns, but also suggests a method to account for residual stress and geometric imperfections separately and the approach is applied to design of high strength steels requiring axial force-moment interaction for advanced analysis or direct analysis. A cross-section analysis technique that provides interaction curves of arbitrary welded sections with consideration of the effects of residual stress by meshing the entire section into small triangular fibers is formulated. In this study, two doubly symmetric sections (box-section and H-section) fabricated by high-strength steel is utilized to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method against a hand-calculation procedure. The effects of residual stress are mostly not considered explicitly in previous works and they are considered in an explicit manner in this paper which further discusses the basis of the yield surface theory for design of structures made of high strength steels.
