  • This study is an experimental research on the adsorption capacity and the adsorption system utilizing Discarded Automotive Tires(DAT) and Powdered or Granular Activated Carbon(PAC or GAC) for the removal of heavy metals, Ag(I), Cd(II), Cu(II), Zn(II). Batch shaking test was conducted to determine the adsorption capacity of DA T and PAC in removing the heavy metals from aqueous wastes; and laboratory-scale column experiment was performed to present design factors affecting the optimum design of adsorption column with DAT and GAC, through the concept of Bed Deph/Service Time(BDST). As results, DAT has been proven to be a good adsorbent will its adsorption capacity not falling behind PAC or GAC. Factors affecting heavy metals removals were amount of adsorbents, initial concentrations, pH and so on. BDST equations were compared with values presented by the breakthrough data from adsorption system.

  • Pharmaceutical use accounts for a great part of articles and papers on crosslinking of polymers. Crosslinking of polymers used for tissue engineering and drug delivery respects non-cytotoxicity and in situ gelling. The crosslinking of polymers is aimed not only at the improvement of modulus, chemical resistance, and thermal resistance, but also at endowing them with such functions as metal adsorption, antifouling, and ion exchange via crosslinked segments. Smart polymers responding to environmental change, and cosslinking mediated by light, enzyme, natural compound and in aqueous medium in consideration of environment are being studied. Developing new polymeric materials is essential along with the pharmaceutics aiming at the longevity of 120 years old. Functionalization and property adjustment of polymers through crosslinking will be done more delicately. Hydrogels will be focused on injectable and in situ gel forming. In the coating industry crosslinking system with low non-toxicity and low energy consumption will be developed in consideration of workers and environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the treatment ability of refractory organics in hot rolling precess waste water by redox(reduction and oxidation) reaction. Metal is oxidized in an aqueous solution to generate electron which can reduce water to generate hydroxy radical. These hydroxy radical is very effective to conduct hydrogen abstraction reaction and addition reaction to the carbon - carbon unsaturated link. The surface area of metal alloy reaction material is more than enough to get equilibrium at a single treatment. The efficiency of COD treatment by redox reaction showed maximum at mild pH of pH 7 and pH 6. But it was not effective in acidic atmosphere of pH 3, 4, 5 and basic atmosphere of pH 8 or over. Redox reaction system in much more helpful in a commercial coagulation sedimentation treatment than exclusive system.

  • This study was undertaken to develop a stable self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) for trans-cinnamaldehyde, a known antibacterial and antifungal agent. A simultaneous analytical method was established for quantification of trans-cinnamaldehyde and its degradant, cinnamic acid. Various surfactants were applied to assess their effect on the aqueous solubility of trans-cinnamaldehyde, and pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were plotted. Of the various formulations tested, the liquid SMEDDS composed of trans-cinnamaldehyde (oil), Cremophor EL (surfactant) and Transcutol P (cosurfactant) at a volume ratio of 10/70/20, produced the smallest emulsion droplet size (around 23 nm). The stability test determined the superior stability of the trans-cinnamaldehyde SMEDDS with constant trans-cinnamaldehyde content and z-average diameter of emulsion, under accelerated and heat stressed condition. Thus, we believe that this novel trans-cinnamaldehyde SMEDDS formulation has the potential to be applied for the development of trans-cinnamaldehyde medicines in the pharmaceutical industry.

  • To solubilize practically insoluble biphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB), which has been used for the treatment of chronic hepatitis as tablets or hard capsules, the solubilities of DDB in various hydrophilic, oily and hydrocarbon vehicles, and aqueous surfactant solutions were measured by high performance liquid chromatography. It was found that, among the vehicles studied, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 300 revealed the best solvency, and the solubility reached 17.6 mg/ml at 37$^{\circ}C$. The addition of glycyrrhizic acid ammonium salt (GAA) to DDB-PEG 300 solution (5-20 mg/g) inhibited the formation of precipitates, and at the concentration of 10 mg/g, any precipitaction was not observed even after 2 years at 4$^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, GAA markedly enhanced the permeation of DDB through the rabbit duodenal mucosa in a concentration dependent manner. The addition of copolyvidone (ca. 1.0%) to DDB-GAA-PEG 300 system (1 : 0.5 97.5 w/w) was most effective in preventing the considerable precipitation of DDB-PEG 300 solution (7.5 mg/750 mg) when mixed with water of 300-900 ml at 37$^{\circ}C$. GAA showed a synergistic effect in the prevention of precipitate formation. This finding suggests that this DDB formulation may form less precipitation when DDB soft capsules disintegrate and diffuse into the gastrointestinal fluid, resulting in improving the bioavailability Dissolution rate of DDB (7.5 mg) from sort elastic capsules of DDB-GAA-PEG 300 system was rapid. The supersaturation state was maintained for 2 hr at the concentration of 7.35$\pm$3.3 mg in 900 ml of water without precipitation. The total amount of DDB dissolved from this new formulation was 5.3 and 6.1 times higher, when compared to marketed DDB tablets (25 mg) and capsules (7.5 mg), respectively.

  • In this study, flat-type photocatalytic reaction system is applied to reduce toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) to trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) in aqueous solution under UV irradiation. To overcome the limitation of conventional photocatalysis, a novel approach toward photocatalytic system for reduction of hexavalent chromium including nanotubular $TiO_2$ (NTT) on two kinds of titanium substrates (foil and mesh) were established. In addition, modified Ti substrates were prepared by bending treatment to increase reaction efficiency of Cr(VI) in the flat-type photocatalytic reactor. For the fabrication of NTT on Ti substrates, Ti foil and mesh was anodized with mixed electrolytes ($NH_4F-H_2O-C_2H_6O_2$) and then annealed in ambient oxygen. The prepared NTT arrays were uniformly grown on two Ti substrates and surface property measurements were performed through SEM and XRD. Hydraulic retention time(HRT) and substrate type were significantly affected the Cr(VI) reduction. Hence, the photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction was observed to be highest up to 95% at bended(modified) Ti mesh and lowest HRT. Especially, Ti mesh was more effective as NTT substrate in this research.

  • The present study was performed to investigate the putative anxiolytic-like effects of the aqueous extract of the roots of Scrophularia buergeriana (SB-W) using elevated plus-maze (EPM) and hole-board apparatus in mice. SB-W was orally administered at doses of 50, 100, 200 or 400 mg/kg to ICR mice, 1 h before the behavioral evaluation. Control group were administered with an equal volume of saline, and positive control group with buspirone (2 mg/kg, i.p.). The administration of SB-W significantly increased the percentage of time spent in open arms and entries into the open arms of the EPM compared with saline-treated control group (P < 0.05). Futhermore, those anxiolytic-like activities of SB-W were antagonized by flumazenil (a $GABA_A$ antagonist, 10 mg/kg), but not by WAY-100635 (a 5-$HT_{1A}$ antagonist, 0.3 mg/kg). Moreover, there were no changes in the locomotor activity and myorelaxant effects in any group compared with saline-treated control group. In the hole-board test, the administration of SB-W (200 and 400 mg/kg) significantly increased the number of head-dipping compared with saline-treated control group (P < 0.05). Therefore, these findings suggest that Scrophularia buergeriana promotes the anxiolytic-like activity mediated by GABAergic nervous system in mice.

  • The analytical methods of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) for water sample with extremely low concentration was developed to extract large volume and to improve fast chromatography for clean up. Semi-automated solid phase extraction (SPE) system and column coupling chromatography using elution pump was optimized and applied to each processes of treatment plant. Results of disk type SPE indicated that this system was applicable below 40 L of aqueous sample with a flow rate of 0.08 ~ 0.2 L/min. Average recoveries of SPE using labeled sampling spike of $^{37}Cl$-2,3,7,8-TCDD was 97%. Column coupling method resulted in reduced clean up time, solvent volume, increased average recoveries with constant elution rate. The combined methods were applied to the monitoring of drinking water treatment plant. Limits of detection (LOD) of each process were calculated. For example, LOD of raw and treated water ranged 0.094~0.968 pg/L and 0.028~0.364 pg/L, respectively. Combined methods of extraction and cleanup techniques provided fast analysis of PCDD/Fs with high accuracy and low LODs for water samples.

  • The solubilizing capacity of GL-12, LAS, SLES aqueous solutions and that of mixed surfactant systems were studied using sudan III, which is oil-siluble dye. The solubilizing capacity of mixed surfactant systems was greatly influenced by the mixing ratios. Generally, the solubilizing capacity increased as the composition of GL-12 in the mixed systems increased. From the effect of NaCl on the solubilizing capacity, it was found that the solubilizate is located near the palisade layer in the GL-12/LAS system, and the solubilizate is located inside the micellar core in the GL-12/SLES mixed system. These differences in the location of slubilizate inside micelles result from the difference of molecular structure between LAS and SLES.

  • A study has been made for the electrochemical destruction of cyanide ions and removal of zinc ions from a simulated electroplating wastewater by the use of a platinum platized-titanium anode and a stainless steel cathode. Several experimental parameters, including electrolysis time, cell current, additives, and chloride concentration, have been investigated and used for efficient destruction of cyanide waste and removal of zinc ions from aqueous solutions. It was found that cell current and type of additives gave great effects on the destruction of cyanide ions and removal of zinc ions. The optimized conditions (electrolysis time: 1hr, current: 12A, additive: 0.5 M NaCl) have been defined to destroy cyanide ions and remove zinc ions with high efficiency and low operation cost. The proper reaction mechanism leading to the destruction of cyanide on the anode has also been discussed.
