A novel technology has been developed for the synthesis of thioglycolic acid (TGA)-capped CdSe quantum dots (QDs) in aqueous medium. The reaction was carried out in air atmosphere with one-pot by using $SeO_2$ to replace Se or $Na_2Se$. The technological parameters including refluxing time, pH values and molar ratios of selenium to cadmium had significant influence on the luminescence properties of CdSe QDs. Furthermore, the obtained QDs were characterized by fluorescent spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. The results demonstrated that the CdSe QDs were of zinc-blended crystal structure in a sphere-like shape.
This study was undertaken to test for anti-Hepatitis B virus (HBV) activity of the aqueous extracts prepared from Eugenia caryophyllate, Ephedra sinica, Cinnamomum cassia. Aqueous extracts were assayed for the inhibition of HBV replication by measurement of HBV DNA and surface antigen (HBsAg) levels in the extracellular medium of HePG2 2.2.15 cells. All extracts decreased the levels of extracellular HBV virion DNA at concentrations ranging from 128 to 256 $\mu$g/ml and inhibited the production of HBsAg dose-dependently. Our findings suggest that these three hebal medicinal plants may have potential to develop as specific anti-HBV drugs in the future.
The inclusion of ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$$({\beta}-CyD)$ with prothionamide in aqueous phase was investigated by circular dichroism(CD), ultraviolet (UV) absorption, and solubility technique. The results suggested that a region of drug chromophore was located within the asymmetric center of ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$. Solubility and spectral changes were quantitatively treated to obtain stoichiometric ratio, which was found to be 1 : 1, and formation constants which were determined by solubility, CD, and UV method were 257, 367, and 389 $M^{-1}$, respectively. Also, the formation constant of the inclusion complex was determined by CD method at various pH. The result was that $K_c$ depended upon the pH of medium, and this fact also supported that thioamide moiety was accomodated in the cavity of ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$.
The purpose of this study was to investigate dyeing properties and antibacterial activities of cotton and silk fabrics treated with Ginkgo biloba leaf extracted with three kinds of aqueous solvents: distilled water, electrolytic reduction water and electrolytic oxidation water. The optimum dyeing condition of Ginkgo biloba leaf was 120 min at 8$0^{\circ}C$. Electrolytic reduction water had the highest dyeability to both cotton and silk compared with electrolytic oxidation water and distilled water. A color of extract by distilled water and electrolytic oxidation water showed yellowish Yellow Red, extract by electrolytic reduction water showed reddish Yellow Red. Irrespective of kinds of extraction solvents, appropriate acidity of medium was pH 9∼11 and pH 3 for cotton and silk fabrics, respectively. Colorfastness to laundering and Light fastness showed generally low but crocking fastness was excellent. Antibacterial activities of the treated fabrics above were 99.9%.
This study was undertaken to test for antiviral activity of the aqueous extracts prepared from 4 medicinal plants of Korea (Terminalia chebula, Sanguisorba officinalia, Rubus coreanus, Rheum palmatum). Aqueous extracts were assayed for the inhibition of hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication by measurement of HBV DNA and surface antigen (HBsAg) levels in the extracellular medium of HepG2 2.2.15 cells. All extracts decreased the levels of extracellular HBV virion DNA at concentrations ranging from 64 to $128{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$ and inhibited the production of HBsAg dose-dependently. Among the 4 tested plants, Terminalia chebula exhibits the most prominent anti-HBV activities. Our findings suggest that these 4 medicinal plants may have potential to develop as specific anti-HBV drugs in the future.
In this study, poly(N-methylol methacrylamide) (NMMAAm) and poly(N-methylol methacrylamide/vinyl sulphonic acid) (NMMAAm-VSA) hydrogels were synthesized by $^{60}Co-{\gamma}$ ray irradiation at an ambient temperature. The graphs belonging to the gelation percent- percent-dose and swelling curves were drawn by using data which were obtained from water and different pH solutions. Characterization of hydrogels was performed by FTIR and DSC-TGA analysis. Heavy metal ion ($Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$) removal capacities of hydrogels were investigated in aqueous solutions, which had different concentrations (100-1500 mg/L). In metal ion removal studies, pH value of aqueous medium was kept constant at 5.0. Maximum metal ion removal values were obtained for NMMAAm-VSA (1:3 mole ratio) hydrogels. Metal ion removal capacities of NMMAAm-VSA (1:3 mole ratio) hydrogels were found as 82 mg/g and 98 mg/g for $Ni^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ ions, respectively.

The well-known Cu2+-selective chemodosimetric behavior of rhodamine B hydrazide was successfully switched to selectivity for Hg2+. The fluorescence signaling is remarkably selective toward Hg2+ ions compared to other common biologically and environmentally important metal ions, including Cu2+ ions. The detection limit was 0.2 mM in an acetate-buffered aqueous 10% methanol solution at pH 5. The OFF-ON type of signaling is due to the selective Hg2+-induced hydrolysis of the lactam ring of the hydrazide as has been reported for the standard Cu2+-signaling process of the same compound. A simple change in medium resulted in clear switching of selective signaling from Cu2+ to Hg2+, which extends the applicability of the easily accessible hydrazide derivative.
This study examined the swelling behavior and in vitro release of a model drug, tetracycline-HCl, from alginate and alginate-polyaspartate (Alg-PASP) composite gel beads. The alginate and Alg-PASP composite beads were prepared using an ionic crosslinking method with aqueous $Ca^{2+}$. Their microporous morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The swelling ratio of the beads in different media varied according to their composition, cross-linking density ($Ca^{2+}$ concentration), and pH of the aqueous medium. The in vitro release experiment of the tetracycline-HCl encapsulated beads in different media suggests that the release of the drug is governed mainly by the swelling properties of the polymer network. The presence of PASP was found to significantly influence the swelling properties and drug release profile.
Freezing of the binary solution ($H_2O-NaCl$) saturating a packed bed of spheres is investigated experimentally. The system is cooled through its top surface, and the bottom is maintained at a temperature above the liquidus. Experiments are performed on the hypolutectic side, and the cold wall temperature is lower than the eutectic point. The effects of initial mixture concentration, superheat and glass bead diameter on temperature and concentration distributions are investigated. Supercooling was observed only at early times of the freezing process for experiments with 5% initial salt concentration. Flow visualization experiments and mushy-liquid interface position observations revealed natural convection in the liquid region. Remelting phenomena was not observed at both the solid-mushy and mushy-liquid interfaces.

A convenient synthetic route has been developed to synthesize 5-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl) methoxy)phenyl)-3-(4-sustituted phenyl)pyrazolines (5a-f) and 5-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)phenyl)-3-(4-substituted phenyl)isoxazolines (6a-f) starting from 2-phenyl-4-chloromethylthiazole (1). The chloromethylthiazole (1) was first condensed with 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde (2) for obtaining 4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde (3). Claisen-Smidth condensation of 4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)benzaldehyde (3) and acetophenones has been carried in alkaline alcohol and obtained 3-(4-((2-phenylthiazol-4-yl)methoxy)phenyl)-1-(4-substituted phenyl)prop-2-en-1-ones (4a-f). The cyclocondensation of 2-propen-1-ones has been first time carried separately with hydrazine hydrate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in aqueous micellar tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) medium for getting the titled heterocycles with good to excellent yields.
