The effect of aspirin on the recovery of nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia in cultured eels (Anguilla japonica) was studied. Methemoglobinemia was induced by exposing eels to nitrite (120 ㎎ NO2-N/ℓ) for 24 hr. The nitrite exposed eels were bathed in 20 ppm aspirin solution (Aspirin), 0.8 % NaCl solution (NaCl), 20 ppm aspirin plus 0.8% NaCl solution (NaCl + Aspirin) and 50% nitrite free water(control) for 24 hr to recover from nitrite toxicity. Peripheral blood was taken from the arterious bulb from all groups to analyse hematocrit value, hemoglobin concentration, and nitrite concentration of the blood. Histopathological features of gill were also observed. Aspirin and control groups were more effective than NaCl and NaCl + Aspirin groups in recovery of hematocrit value and hemoglobin concentration, methemoglobin rate and nitrite concentration. The histopathological features on the gill of aspirin group were similar to those of normal eels, but other groups showed focal hyperemia in the lamellar carpillaries, epithelial hyperplasia. These results suggested that aspirin was very effective to recover from methemoglobinemia in nitrite-induced cultured eels.
This study evaluated acute toxicity of chlorine dioxide (ClO2 ) to juveniles of black seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii (19.4±2.3 g, 10.7±0.4 cm) and red seabream Pagrus major (74.9±8.2 g, 15.9±1.0 cm). Thirty juveniles for each species were exposed to target ClO2 concentrations of 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.125, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5 mg/L in triplicate for eight days. Half lethal concentrations for 96 hours were found at 0.14 and 0.24 mg ClO2/L for black seabream and red seabream, respectively. Red seabream larger than black seabream in body weight appears to be more resistance to chlorine dioxide. However, regardless of species or size, specific loading rates of chlorine dioxide to total fish weight (daily feeding amount of ClO2/total fish weight) were similar, showing 1.3 and 1.1 g ClO2/kg fish·day-1 for black seabream and red seabream.
Short-term acute toxicity of synthetic detergent(LAS) to larvae of loach, Misgurnus angillicaudatus was examined by static bioassay. The larvae were exposed to 15 different concentration of synthetic detergent for 16, 48, 72, 96 and 120 hours in order to determine median lethal concentration($LC_{50}$). The $100\%$ mortarlity of larvae was showed within 120, 96, 48 and 16 hours for 6, 18, 30 and 38 ppm, respectively. The median lethal concentration values of the larvae were 12.59 ppm for 48 hours, 4.00 ppm for 96 hours and 1.02 ppm for 120 hours. The permissible toxicant concentration of acute toxicity to larvae was $0.37{\sim}0.43$ ppm, and application factor of the synthetec detergent was $0.093{\sim}0.108$. The median lethal time($LT_{50}$) for different concentration also was determined. The $LT_{50}$ of 0.2 ppm was found within 165.1 hours and 2 ppm was 106.2 hours, while the $LT_{50}$ of 8 ppm was 60.3 hours and that of 38 ppm was 23.5 hours.

The studies on the detoxification of paralytic shellfish poison (PSP)-infested blue mussels, Mytilus edulis and oyster, Crassostrea gigas were performed for using of available processing resource. Toxic blue mussel and oysters from Nampo in Masan Bay, Hachong in Koje Bay and Woepori in Koje were used for experimental samples. The toxicity of low toxic blue mussel $(A,\;84{\mu}g/100g;\;B,\;166{\mu}g/100g;\;C,\;295{\mu}g/l00g;\;D,\;557{\mu}g/100g)$ and oyster $(740{\mu}g/100g)$ were reduced below the regulation limit of PSP $(80{\mu}g/100g)$ or undetected level by mouse bioassay after boiling at $98^{\circ}C$ for 10 min and retorting at $115^{\circ}C$ for 70 min, while the toxicity of high toxic blue mussel $(E,\;8,760{\mu}g/100g)$ remained beyond the regulation limit after boiling and retorting at same condition. These results suggested that the regulation limit of PSP could be level up from $(80{\mu}g/100g)$ to about $160{\mu}g/100g$.
Twenty-four specimens of the pufferfish Fugu xantheptens, Korean name, 'Ggachibog', collected at a fish market of Pusan were examined for anatomical distribution of toxicity by the mouse bioassay method. Frequency of toxic specimens was 88, 75, 54, 13, 71, 80 and $71\%$, in terms of liver, intestine, skin, muscle, testis, ovary and bile, respectively. Their the highest toxicity scores were 417, 387, 112, 17, 39, 403 and 178 MU/g, respectively; and average toxicity values were $110\pm25.0(mean \pm S.E.)$, $73\pm20.3,\;17.8\pm 5.1,\;2.7\pm1.1,\;15.6\pm5.4,\;115\pm33.0\;and\;34\pm9.3 MU/g,$ respectively. A significant correlation between the toxicities of liver and intestine(r=0.93), between those of liver and skin (r=0.79) and between those of liver and ovary(r=0.83) was observed.
The use of triorganotins as insecticides, bacteriocides, and antifouling agents has increased dramatically over the past 30 years, In this paper, to evaluate the acute and chronic toxicity effects of various triorganotins (TBTO, TBTE, CTPT, TBTCI) on the growth of microalgae, Skeletonema costatum, we carried out the short term and long term experiments, respectively. In the short-term experiments, the growth of S. costatum was inhibited by the various triorganotins in the dose dependent manners, but recovered by the time laps. The growth inhibition of triorganotins were decreased in the groups with higher initial cell density. These data were resulted from the dilution effect and the biodegradation of triorganotins by the microalgae. In the long-term experiments, S. costatum died completely at the 1 $\mu$g/L of TBTP and CTPT, but didn't in short-term experiments. The facts suggest that the toxicity of the chronic exposure of triorganotins should be increased in the natural sea water with low phytoplankton density.

Two species of fish and five species of marine invertebrate showed different tolerances to the toxicity of composite slag and bituminaus coal. Especially, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus and young Haliotis discus hannai displayed marked differences in tolerance from. H. pulcherrimus and young H. discus hannai showed lethal effects at higher concentrations than those concentrations of the composite slag in the 1.0 and $0.4\%$ range, respectively. H. pulcherrimus showed no lethal effects at a lower concentration of $1.0\%$ composite slag and some differences in the rate of oxygen consumption with this concentration of composite slag. The lethal effects of bituminous coal on marine and fisheries organisms, even with higher concentrations, were not observed. At a higher concentration than that of 500 mg/L (ppm) of bituminous coal, decrease effects appeared in the rate of oxygen consumption of the experimental organisms. Taking into consideration that the experimental concentration of composite slag and bituminous coal were impracticable in the ocean, the results of this experiment suggest that composite slag and bituminous coal pose no real threat to marine or fisheries organisms.

Acute toxicities of five pharmaceutical products were evaluated with aquatic microbes, invertebrates, and fish. The test pharmaceuticals, i.e., cimetidine, carbamazepine, diltiazem, acetaminophene, and metformin have been often detected in aquatic environment, but theire cological hazard on receptors of various trophic levels has seldom been evaluated. In the present study, we conducted acute toxicity assays with a marine bacterium, Vibrio fischeri, an invertebrate, Daphnia magna, and a fish, Japanese medake (Oryzias latipes). In general, D. magna, showed the most sensitive response to the test chemicals. Diltiazem exhibited the lowest EC50 value after 96 hr of exposure at 7.6 mg/L, followed by cimetidine >acetaminophen > metformin = carbamazepine in an order of decreasing susceptibility. With the fish, diltiazem and carbamazepine showed the 96 hr EC50 values at 14.1${\sim}$35.4 mg/L while acetaminophen, cimetidine, and metformin did not cause 50% mortality at 100 mg/L. Similar pattern was noted with the Microtox Assay, with which the median effective concentrations for acetaminophen, cimetidine, and metformin were found at the range between 301.8 and 755.4 mg/L. Carbamazepine and diltiazem exposure to the microbes resulted in EC50 values around 50 mg/L. Predicted no effect concentrations (PECs) of these pharmaceuticals derived from the EC5O values obtained from this study, and predicted environmental concentrations (PECs) obtained from available literatures were utilized to estimate ecological risks of the test compounds. No test pharmaceuticals resulted in risk quotients (PEC/PNEC) greater than 1, which suggests no serious potential ecological concerns. It should be noted however that further studies including the refinement of PEC derivation, identification and toxicity assessment of the metabolites and/or their interactions with other stressors may be warranted to better understand the environmental consequences of the residual pharmaceutical discharge to the waterway.

Non-specific reaction has been a problem in doing, especially, research and diagnosis for infectious agents. Avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex (ABC) techniques has widely been used to amplify a reaction. Photobacterium damse1a subsp. piscicdia (formerly Pasteurella piscicida) exhibited a capacity to bind with streptavidin non-specifically. The band, estimated 26 K Da in Western blotted paper, was blocked with biotin but incompletely. In an attempt to explore an involvement of the non-specific substance in attaching piscine cells, cell attachment test performed using anti- Ph. d. subsp piscicida sera raised mouse and rabbit exhibited slightly blocking effects for Mediterranean (1736) and significantly for Japanese (Sp 92144) isolate. Biotin decreased the attachment ability significantly for Sp92144 but it was not effective to 1736. Both isolates showed greatly enhanced attachment ability with poly-L-lysin. The non-specific binding substance was contained in bacterial extracellular products (ECPs). The substance was able to purified with 2-imminobiotin affinity column, the purified substance appeared to have 4 bands in silver staining, and had a carbohydrate branch. This purified substance showed cytotoxic effects selectively between 5 piscine cell lines. Moreover, it stimulated rainbow trout macrophage in terms of reduction of cytochrome cas well as yeast phagocytosis, significantly.
The aim of this study was to investigate the in vivo toxicity of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), on the immune system of the rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus. Fish were injected twice intraperitoneally with DEHP (200, 400, and 800 mg/kg BW), and the cellularity and functional activity of phagocytes in the spleen and head kidney were measured. The number of head kidney leukocyte cells was significantly greater in fish treated with 800-mg DEHP/kg BW. Nonspecific immunity, as determined by the phagocytic index, was significantly decreased at 800-mg DEHP/kg BW in the head kidney. A significant reduction in phagocytic capacity was observed in the head kidney at ${\geq}$400-mg DEHP/kg BW. Furthermore, significantly increased levels of serum glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamic pyruvate transaminase indicated a marked hepatic dysfunction in immunosuppressed fish. Total serum protein was significantly reduced at ${\geq}$400-mg DEHP/kg BW; however, there were no significant changes in lysozyme activity. These results demonstrate that immune responses in the rock bream, Oplegnathus fasciatus can predict immunotoxicity at doses ${\geq}$400-mg DEHP/kg BW.
