  • The localized surface-plasmon resonance has drawn great attention, due to its unique optical properties. In this work a general theoretical description of the dipole mode is proposed, using the forced damped harmonic oscillator model of free charges in an ellipsoid. The restoring force and driving force are derived in the quasistatic approximation under general conditions. In this model, metal is regarded as composed of free charges and bound charges. The bound charges form the dielectric background which has a dielectric function. Those free charges undergo a collective motion in the dielectric background under the driving force. The response of free charges will not be included in the dielectric function like the Drude model. The extinction and scattering cross sections as well as the damping coefficient from our model are verified to be consistent with those based on the Drude model. We introduce size effects and modify the restoring and driving forces by adding the dynamic depolarization factor and the radiation damping term to the depolarization factor. This model provides an intuitive physical picture as well as a simple theoretical description of the dipole mode of the localized surface-plasmon resonance based on free-charge collective motion.

  • Marine seismic data have not only primary signals from subsurface but also ghost signals reflected from the sea surface. The ghost decreases temporal resolution of seismic data because it attenuates specific frequency components. For eliminating the ghost signals effectively, the exact ghost delaytimes and reflection coefficients are required. Because of undulation of the sea surface and vertical movements of airguns and streamers, the ghost delaytime varies spatially and randomly while acquiring seismic data. The reflection coefficient is a function of frequency, incidence angle of plane-wave and the sea state. In order to estimate the proper ghost delaytimes considering these characteristics, we compared the ghost delaytimes estimated with L-1 norm, L-2 norm and kurtosis of the deghosted trace and its autocorrelation on synthetic data. L-1 norm of autocorrelation showed a minimal error and the reflection coefficient was calculated using Kirchhoff approximation equation which can handle the effect of wave height. We applied the estimated ghost delaytimes and the calculated reflection coefficients to remove the source and receiver ghost effects. By removing ghost signals, we reconstructed the frequency components attenuated near the notch frequency and produced the migrated stack section with enhanced temporal resolution.

  • Low resolution spectral modeling of water vapor is carried out by applying the weighted-sum-of-gray-gases model (WSGGM) to a narrow band. For a given narrow band, focus is placed on proper modeling of gray gas absorption coefficients vs. temeprature relation used for any solution methods for the Radiative Transfer Equation(RTE). Comparison between the modeled emissivity and the "true" emissivity obtained from a high temperatue statistical narrow band parameters is made ofr the total spectrum as well as for a few typical narrow bands. Application of the model to nonuniform gas layers is also made. Low resolution spectral intensities at the boundary are obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temeprature profiles using the obtained for uniform, parabolic and boundary layer type temperature profiles using the obtained WSGGM's with 9 gray gases. The results are compared with the narrow band spectral intensities as obtained by a narrow band model-based code with the Curtis-Godson approximation. Good agreement is found between them. Local heat source strength and total wall heat flux are also compared for the cases of Kim et al, which again gives promising agreement.

  • Disaggregation techniques are widely used to transform observed daily rainfall values into hourly ones, which serve as important inputs for flood forecasting purposes. However, an important limitation with most of the existing disaggregation techniques is that they treat the rainfall process as a realization of a stochastic process, thus raising questions on the lack of connection between the structure of the models on one hand and the underlying physics of the rainfall process on the other. The present study introduces a nonlinear deterministic (and specifically chaotic) framework to study the dynamic characteristics of rainfall distributions across different temporal scales (i.e. weights between scales), and thus the possibility of rainfall disaggregation. Rainfall data from the Seoul station (recorded by the Korea Meteorological Administration) are considered for the present investigation, and weights between only successively doubled resolutions (i.e., 24-hr to 12-hr, 12-hr to 6-hr, 6-hr to 3-hr) are analyzed. The correlation dimension method is employed to investigate the presence of chaotic behavior in the time series of weights, and a local approximation technique is employed for rainfall disaggregation. The results indicate the presence of chaotic behavior in the dynamics of weights between the successively doubled scales studied. The modeled (disaggregated) rainfall values are found to be in good agreement with the observed ones in their overall matching (e.g. correlation coefficient and low mean square error). While the general trend (rainfall amount and time of occurrence) is clearly captured, an underestimation of the maximum values are found.

  • In this paper, we numerically investigated the optimum pump light power best compensating for pulse distortion due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation (SPM) as a function of channel input power in 8 channel ${\times}$ 40 Gbps wavelength division multiplexing (WDM systems. Also we investigated the allowable maximum channel input power dependence on modulation format and fiber dispersion coefficient in the various pump light power of OPC. The considered WDM transmission system is based on path-averaged intensity approximation (PAIA) mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) compensation method, which has highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNL-SDF) as nonlinear medium of optical phase conjugator (OPC) in the mid-way of total transmission line. We confirmed that optimal pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC depend on modulation format, initial channel input power, total transmission length and fiber dispersion. But optimal pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC must be selected to make power conversion ratio to almost unity. And we confirmed that, if we allow a 1 dB eye opening penalty (EOP), the tolerable maximum channel input power is increased by using RZ than NRZ as modulation format when pump light power of HNL-DSF OPC is not optimal value but another values.

  • We discuss a modified numerical model based on the Monte Carlo radiative transfer (MCRT) method, i.e., the MCRT matrix method, for the analysis of atmospheric scattering effects in three-dimensional flash LIDAR systems. Based on the MCRT method, the radiative transfer function for a LIDAR signal is constructed in a form of a matrix, which corresponds to the characteristic response. Exploiting the superposition and convolution of the characteristic response matrices under the paraxial approximation, an extended computer simulation model of an overall flash LIDAR system is developed. The MCRT matrix method substantially reduces the number of tracking signals, which may grow excessively in the case of conventional Monte Carlo methods. Consequently, it can readily yield fast acquisition of the signal response under various scattering conditions and LIDAR-system configurations. Using the computational model based on the MCRT matrix method, we carry out numerical simulations of a three-dimensional flash LIDAR system operating under different atmospheric conditions, varying the scattering coefficient in terms of visible distance. We numerically analyze various phenomena caused by scattering effects in this system, such as degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio, glitches, and spatiotemporal spread and time delay of the LIDAR signals. The MCRT matrix method is expected to be very effective in analyzing a variety of LIDAR systems, including flash LIDAR systems for autonomous driving.

  • The irrational number ${\pi}$ is defined as the ratio of circumference of a circle to its radius and always becomes constant. This article does Monte Carlo approximation of its value using the famous Buffon's needle experiment and shows that its convergence is not always proportional to the sample size. We also do Monte Carlo simulations to see the convergence of the computed ${\pi}$ values from the random walk series with independent normal increment. Finally we apply the theoretical derivation to various financial time series data such as KOSPI, stock prices of Korean big firms, global stock indices and major foreign exchange rates. The historical data shows that log transformed data random walk process but most of their first lagged data don't follow a normal distribution. More importantly the computed value from the ratio of the regression coefficient ${\pi}$ tend to converge a constant, unfortunately not ${\pi}$. Using this result we could doubt on the efficient market hypothesis, and relate the degree of the hypothesis with the amount of deviation of the estimated ${\pi}$ values.

  • In this paper, sound absorption of thin elastic plates installed in a rigid duct is discussed using an analytic method. The number of plates can be one or two, and each plate might have micro-perforation. Vibration of the plates and sound pressure fields inside the duct and air cavity are expressed in terms of an infinite series of modal functions. Under the plane wave assumption, a low frequency approximation is derived by including the first few plate modes. It is found that the sound absorption coefficient of the plates without micro-perforation shows sharp peaks at resonance frequencies, and due to the interaction between the plates and air cavity, the resonance frequencies move as the cavity depth changes. For the case of micro-perforated plates, it is found that the sound absorption is mainly affected by the perforation ratio. When the perforation ratio is order of few percent, the sound absorption is almost independent of plate vibration.

  • Purpose: This study was done to test the validity and reliability of the Adolescent Mental Problem Questionnaire (AMPQ) for Korean high school students. Methods: The AMPQ was designed to assess adolescents', mental health status and problem behavior (Ahn, 2006). A methodological study design was used with exploratory factor analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and a fitness of the modified model for validity. Also, Cronbach's alpha coefficients and alternative-form method for reliability were used. AMPQ was tested with a sample of 36,313 high school students. The participants consisted of 18,701 males and 17,612 females. Results: Seven factors were extracted through factor analysis: 'Psychiatric problems', 'Delinquency', 'Academic troubles', 'Family problems', 'Hazardous behavior', 'Harmful circumstance', 'Eating problems'. These factors explained 51.1% of the total variance. The fitness of the modified model was good ($X^2$=38,413.76, Goodness of Fit Index [GFI]=.94, Adjusted Goodness of Fit Index [AGFI]=.93, Comparative Fit Index [CFI]=.95, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation [RMSEA]=.05), and concurrent validity with Korea-Youth Self-Report [K-YSR] was .63. Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the 31 items was .85. Conclusion: The results of present study suggest that the modified AMPQ instrument may be useful for efficiently assessing mental health status and problem behavior in late adolescent, high school students.

  • Conductive rubber material was molded in a belt shape to measure respiration. Its resistivity was approximately $0.03{\;}{\Omega}m$ and the resistance-displacement relationship showed a negative exponent. The temperature coefficient was approximately $0.006{\;}k{\Omega}/^{\circ}C$ negligible when practically applied on the abdomen. The conductive rubber belt was applied on a normal male's abdomen with the dimensional change measured during resting breathing. The abdominal signal was differentiated ($F_{m}$) and compared with the accurate standard air flow rate signal ($F_{s}$) obtained by pneumotachometry. $F_{m}$ and $F_{s}$ differed in waveform, but the start and end timings of each breaths were clearly synchronized, demonstrating that the respiratory frequency could be accurately estimated before further processing of $F_{m}$. $F_{m}-F_{s}$ loop showed a nonlinear hysteresis within each breath period, thus 6 piecewise linear approximation was performed, leading to a mean relative error of 14 %. This error level was relatively large for clinical application, though customized calibration seemed feasible for monitoring general variation of ventilation. The present technique would be of convenient and practical application as a new wearable respiratory transducer.
