  • Purpose - This study aims to verify whether the effect of tax avoidance on corporate value is non-linear in the Korean financial markets. Design/methodology/approach - This study believes that the cause of the inconsistent empirical analysis results of previous studies that verified the relationship between tax avoidance and firm value may be an error in assuming linearity, and verifies whether a nonlinear relationship exists. The sample company in this study is a December settlement corporation listed on the Korean stock market, and the analysis period is from 2000 to 2021. In the empirical analysis model, Tobin's Q is used as a proxy for corporate value, tax avoidance is used as the main independent variable, and a regression model is designed with corporate size, growth rate, and debt ratio set as control variables. Findings - As a result of the empirical analysis, it can be confirmed that there is an inverted U-shaped nonlinear relationship between tax avoidance and corporate value. In the additional analysis using Ohlson (1995) firm valuation model for the robustness of the results of the empirical analysis, the same nonlinear value relationship between tax avoidance can be confirmed. Research implications or Originality - This study is considered to be meaningful in that it verifies the non-linear relationship of tax avoidance, which has not been attempted in previous studies. The meaning of the inverted U-shaped nonlinear relationship presented in this study is that corporate tax avoidance acts as a factor that increases corporate value up to a certain level, but rather becomes a factor that decreases corporate value when it exceeds a critical point. These results are expected to provide new perspectives and perspectives on tax avoidance to companies belonging to the Korean capital market.

  • An avoidance/guidance problem of an aircraft against moving obstacle is considered in two dimensional space. The aircraft is modelled as a point mass flying with constant speed. The lateral acceleration is assumed the control input. Artificial potential functions are applied to the terminal point and moving obstacles in order that repulsive forces and an attractive force are produced by the obstacles and the terminal point respectively. A real time guidance/avoidance law is proposed by using the potential forces and relative velocity. The guidance law for a logarithm potential function results the well-known proportional navigation law. The avoidance control command is inverse proportional to the time-to-go to the obstacle and turns the aircraft toward the negative direction of the line-of-sight change. The performance of the proposed guidance/avoidance law is verified with simulations.

  • This paper presents a new method for local obstacle avoidance of indoor mobile robots. The method combines a directional approach called the lane method and a velocity space approach. The lane method divides working area into lanes and then chooses the best lane to follow for efficient and collision-free movement. Then, the heading direction to enter and follow the best lane is decided, and translational and rotational velocity considering physical limitations of a mobile robot are determined. Since this method combines both the directional and velocity space method, it shows collision-free motion as well as smooth motion taking the dynamic of the robot into account.

  • This paper presents an effective approach to dynamic obstacle avoidance for mobile robot. The main concept of this approach includes modified polar mapping for recognition of the moving obstacle in vision-based robot systems. To simplify the segmentation of the moving obstacle from the background and to obtain its relative position data the modified polar mapping is proposed. Dynamic moving obstacles are avoided with a vision sensor and stationary obstacles are avoided with a sonar sensor.

  • In this study, vehicle directional stability is investigated for limit driving for crash avoidance maneuver using a full vehicle dynamic model. The model was analytically validated using typical step steering and lane change simulation. Limit driving condition for the vehicle model was quoted from research results of references. It was demonstrated that instable vehicle motion was caused by not only road conditions but also driving conditions. Also, the simulation showed that braking combined with steering caused very hazardous situation in crash avoidance maneuver. Finally, phase plane plot approach was used to evaluate the dynamic instability.

  • In multi-mobile robot environment, path planning and collision avoidance are important issue to perform a given task collaboratively and cooperatively. The proposed approach is based on a potential field method and fuzzy logic system. For a global path planner, potential field method is employed to select proper path of a corresponding robot and fuzzy logic system is utilized to avoid collisions with static or dynamic obstacles around the robot. This process is continued until the corresponding target of each robot is reached. To test this method, several simulation-based experimental results are given. The results show that the path planning and collision avoidance strategies are effective and useful for multi-mobile robot systems.

  • This study was to identify the mediating effect of hope between stress coping and psychological wellbeing of women immigrants. The data for the study were collected from 592 women immigrants in 10 cities and provinces of Korea. First, it was found that the women immigrants used approach coping more than avoidance coping, and the level of hope and positive wellbeing scored above the middle point. Second, approach coping was positively correlated with hope and positive wellbeing, but avoidance coping was positively correlated with negative wellbeing. Third, the mediating effect of hope between approach coping and positive wellbeing was testified. Finally, the mediating effect of hope between approach coping and negative wellbeing was also testified.

  • In constructing a collision avoidance system, it is important to determine the time for starting collision avoidance maneuver. Many researchers have attempted to formulate various indices by applying a range of techniques. Among these indices, collision risk obtained by combining Distance to the Closest Point of Approach (DCPA) and Time to the Closest Point of Approach (TCPA) information with fuzzy theory is mostly used. However, the collision risk has a limit, in that membership functions of DCPA and TCPA are empirically determined. In addition, the collision risk is not able to consider several critical collision conditions where the target ship fails to take appropriate actions. It is therefore necessary to design a new concept based on logical approaches. In this paper, a collision ratio is proposed, which is the expected ratio of unavoidable paths to total paths under suitably characterized operation conditions. Total paths are determined by considering categories such as action space and methodology of avoidance. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (1972) and collision avoidance rules (2001) are considered to solve the slower ship's dilemma. Different methods which are based on a constant speed model and simulated speed model are used to calculate the relative positions between own ship and target ship. In the simulated speed model, fuzzy control is applied to determination of command rudder angle. At various encounter situations, the time histories of the collision ratio based on the simulated speed model are compared with those based on the constant speed model.

  • This paper proposes a new heuristic search technique for obstacle avoidance of autonomous underwater vehicles equipped with a looking ahead obstacle avoidance sonar. We suggest the fuzzy relation between the sonar sections and the properties of real world environment. Bandler and Kohout's fuzzy relational method are used as the mathematical implementation for the analysis and synthesis of relations between the partitioned sections of sonar over the real-world environmental properties. The direction of the section with optimal characteristics would be selected as the successive heading of AUVs for obstacle avoidance. For the technique using in this paper, sonar range must be partitioned into multi equal sections; membership functions of the properties and the corresponding fuzzy rule bases are estimated heuristically. With the two properties Safety, Remoteness and sonar range partitioned in seven sections, this study gives the good result that enables AUVs to navigate through obstacles in the optimal way to goal.

  • This thesis describes collision avoidance using fuzzy logic based on "Right of way" rules of ICAO and FAA and pilot's experiences for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV). To apply the rules, we designed fuzzy logic based collision avoidance system. And we also designed decision logic for enable condition of collision avoidance system. Decision logic have three kinds of core key, i.e. Relative Range, Time of CPA(Closest Point of Approach) and Distance at CPA. Application of decision logic made a possible to avoid NMAC(Near Mid-Air Collision) and it has been verified through several simulations. To conclude, we proposed the method to carry out "See and Avoid" ability on UAVs, which is capability to mingle with manned aircraft in civil airspace.
