  • An application-layer attack can effectively achieve its objective with a small amount of traffic, and detection is difficult because the traffic type is very similar to that of legitimate users. We have discovered a unique characteristic that is produced by a difference in client intention: Both a legitimate user and DDoS attacker establish a session through a 3-way handshake over the TCP/IP layer. After a connection is established, they request at least one HTTP service by a Get request packet. The legitimate HTTP user waits for the server's response. However, an attacker tries to terminate the existing session right after the Get request. These different actions can be interpreted as a difference in client intention. In this paper, we propose a detection algorithm for application layer DDoS attacks based on this difference. The proposed algorithm was simulated using traffic dump files that were taken from normal user networks and Botnet-based attack tools. The test results showed that the algorithm can detect an HTTP-Get flooding attack with almost zero false alarms.

  • Application-layer Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack is one of the leading security problems in the Internet. In recent years, the attack strategies of application-layer DDoS have rapidly developed. This paper introduces a new attack strategy named Path Vulnerabilities-Based (PVB) attack. In this attack strategy, an attacker first analyzes the contents of web pages and subsequently measures the actual response time of each webpage to build a web-resource-weighted-directed graph. The attacker uses a Top M Longest Path algorithm to find M DDoS vulnerable paths that consume considerable resources when sequentially accessing the pages following any of those paths. A detection mechanism for such attack is also proposed and discussed. A finite-state machine is used to model the dynamical processes for the state of the user's session and monitor the PVB attacks. Numerical results based on real-traffic simulations reveal the efficiency of the attack strategy and the detection mechanism.

  • DDoS attacks have became as a social threat since 2009 7.7 DDoS turmoil. Even though defence techniques have been developing to provide against those threats, they become much more sophisticate. In recent years, the attack form of DDoS is changing from high amount of traffic attack of network layers to highly sophisticate small amount of application layers. To make matters worse, attack agent for the attack has became very intelligent so that it is difficult to be blocked since it can't be distinguished from normal PCs. In the user authentication system(such as CAPTCHA) User intervention is required to distinguish normal PCs and intelligent attack agents and in particular, in a NAT environment, IP-based blocking method can be cut off the normal users traffic at the same time. This research examined defense techniques which are able to distinguish between agent and normal PC and effectively block ways the HTTP DDoS offense applying one-time session key based authentication method using Cookie which is used in HTTP protocol to protect web sever from sophisticate application layer of DDoS.

  • Recently, network based DDoS attacks have been changed into application layer DDoS attacks which are targeted at the web services. Specially, an attacker makes zombie PCs generate small traffic and its traffic pattern has been similar to the normal user's pattern. So, existing HTTP PPS based Threshold cannot defend the DDoS attacks effectively. In this paper, we displayed all the GET Flooding attack types and propose three DDoS attack defense mechanisms which are simple and very powerful. Proposed mechanisms can defend all the existing GET Flooding DDoS attacks and be deployed in the real environment immediately with little resource consumption.

  • Malicious botnet has been used for more malicious activities, such as DDoS attacks, sending spam messages, steal personal information, etc. To prevent this, many studies have been preceded. But malicious botnets have evolved and evaded detection systems. In particular, HTTP GET Request attack that exploits the vulnerability of the application layer is used. ALAB of ALADDIN proposed by ETRI is DDoS attack detection system that HTTP GET, Incomplete GET request flooding attack detection algorithm is applied. In this paper, we extend Incomplete GET detection algorithm of ALAB and derive the optimal configuration parameters to verify the validity of the algorithm ALAB by the study of the normal and attack packets.

  • The WDSS improves defensive capacity against web application layer DDoS attack by using web cache server and L7 switch which are added on the DDoS shelter system. When web DDoS attack occurs, security agents divert traffic from backbone network to sub-network of the WDSS and then DDoS protection device and L7 switch block abnormal packets. In the meantime, web cache server responds only to requests of normal clients and maintains stable web service. In this way, the WDSS can counteract the web DDoS attack which generates small traffic and depletes server-client session resource. Furthermore, the WDSS does not require IP tunneling because it is not necessary to retransfer the normal requests to original web server. In this paper, we validate operation of the WDSS and verify defensive capability against web application layer DDoS attacks. In order to do this, we built the WDSS on backbone network of an ISP. And we performed web DDoS tests by using a testing system that consists of zombie PCs. The tests were performed by three types and various amounts of web DDoS attacks. Test results suggest that the WDSS can detect small traffic of the web DDoS attacks which do not have repeat flow whereas the formal DDoS shelter system cannot.

  • We propose a new Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) defense mechanism that protects http web servers from application-level DDoS attacks based on the two methodologies: whitelist-based admission control and busy period-based attack flow detection. The attack flow detection mechanism detects attach flows based on the symptom or stress at the server, since it is getting more difficult to identify bad flows only based on the incoming traffic patterns. The stress is measured by the time interval during which a given client makes the server busy, referred to as a client-induced server busy period (CSBP). We also need to protect the servers from a sudden surge of attack flows even before the malicious flows are identified by the attack flow detection mechanism. Thus, we use whitelist-based admission control mechanism additionally to control the load on the servers. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme via simulation and experiment. The simulation results show that our defense system can mitigate DDoS attacks effectively even under a large number of attack flows, on the order of thousands, and the experiment results show that our defense system deployed on a linux machine is sufficiently lightweight to handle packets arriving at a rate close to the link rate.

  • Software Defined Networking creates totally new concept of networking and its applications which is based on separating the application and control layer from the networking infrastructure as a result it yields new opportunities in improving the network security and making it more automated in robust way, one of these applications is Denial of Service attack mitigation but due to the dynamic nature of Denial of Service attack it would require dynamic response which can mitigate the attack with the minimum false positive. In this paper we will propose a new mitigation Framework for DDoS attacks using Software Defined Networking technology to protect online services e.g. websites, DNS and email services against DoS and DDoS attacks.

  • Nowadays, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on web sites reward attackers financially or politically because our daily lifes tightly depends on web services such as on-line banking, e-mail, and e-commerce. One of DDoS attacks to web servers is called HTTP-GET flood attack which is becoming more serious. Most existing techniques are running on the application layer because these attack packets use legitimate network protocols and HTTP payloads; that is, network-level intrusion detection systems cannot distinguish legitimate HTTP-GET requests and malicious requests. In this paper, we propose a practical detection technique against HTTP-GET flood attacks, based on the access behavior of inline objects in a webpage using NetFlow data. In particular, our proposed scheme is working on the network layer without any application-specific deep packet inspections. We implement the proposed detection technique and evaluate the ability of attack detection on a simple test environment using NetBot attacker. Moreover, we also show that our approach must be applicable to real field by showing the test profile captured on a well-known e-commerce site. The results show that our technique can detect the HTTP-GET flood attack effectively.
