  • Recently, noninvasive prenatal test (NIPT) has been adopted as a primary screening tool for fetal chromosomal aneuploidy. The principle of NIPT lies in isolating the fetal fraction of cell-free DNA in maternal plasma and analyzing it with bioinformatic tools to measure the amount of gene from the target chromosome, such as chromosomes 21, 18, and 13. NIPT will contribute to decreasing the need for unnecessary invasive procedures, including amniocentesis and chorionic villi sampling, for confirming fetal aneuploidy because of its higher positive predictive value than that of the conventional prenatal screening method. However, its greater cost than that of the current antenatal screening protocol may be an obstacle to the adoption of this innovative technique in clinical practice. Digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) is a novel approach for detecting and quantifying nucleic acid. dPCR provides real-time diagnostic advantages with higher sensitivity, accuracy, and absolute quantification than conventional quantitative PCR. Since the groundbreaking discovery that fetal cell-free nucleic acid exists in maternal plasma was reported, dPCR has been used for the quantification of fetal DNA and for screening for fetal aneuploidy. It has been suggested that dPCR will decrease the cost by targeting specific sequences in the target chromosome, and dPCR-based noninvasive testing will facilitate progress toward the implementation of a noninvasive approach for screening for trisomy 21, 18, and 13. In this review, we highlight the principle of dPCR and discuss its future implications in clinical practice.

  • Data communications networks at sea in the future can be modelled by overlapped MANET networks with Broadband Wireless Access carriers. A novel routing scheme (CPLR) is proposed in this paper, which finds out an optimal route by selecting an optimal carrier for each hop in routes based on carrier preferences of each application, and locations of ships as well. As distances between each ships and destination ships are considered in this scheme, routing can be done much faster. Performance is compared with that of the CPR (only Carrier Preference-based Routing Scheme), and it shows some improvements.

  • Applications of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in gene therapy have been hampered by the low efficiency of gene transfer to these cells. In current transduction protocols, retrovirus particles with foreign genes make only limited contact with their target cells by passive diffusion and have short life spans, thereby limiting the chances of viral infection. We theorized that mechanically agitating the virus-containing cell suspensions would increase the movement of viruses and target cells, resulting in increase of contact between them. Application of our mechanical agitation for transduction process has increased the absorption of retrovirus particles more than five times compared to the previous static method without changing cell growth rate and viability. The addition of a mechanical agitation step increased transduction efficiency to 42%, higher than that of any other previously-known static transduction protocol.

  • We propose a fully converged Ethernet and TDM transport system. Developed Ethernet and TDM convergence system can support not only L2 VPN service and premium multimedia service based on MPLS protocol but also TDM leased line service, simultaneously. Developed convergence system can provide high reliability for Ethernet packet due to support protection and restoration function of circuit based networks. Evaluation for Ethernet and TDM path was successfully performed to show the typical application of the proposed system in the legacy networks.

  • In this paper poly (4-methyl vinylpyridinium hydroxide)/SBA-15 composite was prepared as a highly efficient heterogeneous basic catalyst by in situ polymerization method for the first time. It was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET, TGA, SEM and back titration using NaOH. This catalyst exhibited the excellent catalytic activities for the Knoevenagel condensation of various aldehydes with ethyl cyanoacetate. Over this catalyst, ${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated carbonyl compounds were obtained in the reasonable yield at $95^{\circ}C$ in 10 - 30 min in $H_2O$ as a solvent with a 100% selectivity to the condensation products. Catalyst could be easily recycled after the reaction and it could be reused without the significant loss of activity/selectivity performance. No by-product formation, high yields, short reaction times, mild reaction conditions and operational simplicity with reusability of the catalyst were the salient features of the present synthetic protocol. Presence of $H_2O$ as a solvent was also recognized as a "green method".

  • The development of the security solutions that can provide a variety of security services is needed urgently. For development of the security solutions, analysis of international standard security technology is the key. In this paper, international organizations' standardization(ISO/IEC JTC1 SC27, ITU-T SG-17, IETF Security Area, etc.) and the current trend of the standard security technology are mainly analyzed. The core of the latest security technology(Application Bridging, DNS-based Authentication, HTTP Authentication, IP Security, Javascript Security, Authentication Technology Next Generation, Managed Incident, Web Authorization Protocol, Security Automation, Transport Layer Security, etc.) is analyzed focusing on 18 working groups of the IETF.

  • Objective: This study investigated the problems that could be faced with when engineers try to improve the affective quality using the DMAIC model. Background: Affective quality is considered one of the most influential factors for the competitive power of consumer products and many engineers make effort to improve the affective quality. Since the Six Sigma process is effective and wide-used method for quality improvement, it can also be used to improve the affective quality. However six sigma tools cannot be directly used for affective quality because of the subjective and qualitative characteristics of the human affection. Method: Investigate the goals, processes and key factors of DMAIC model and find the difficulties to use six sigma tools for the affective quality. Results: Most of the problems arise from measuring and quantifying the human affective response level and understanding the relationship between the human affective factors. Conclusion: Both the protocol for measuring human affection and the monitoring system to find the affective response change for the product or service are required. Application: The results of this study could be helpful for the engineers not specialized in ergonomics to improve the affective quality in systematic approach.

  • IDS can be used as a countermeasure for malicious attacks which cause degrade of network transmission performance by disturbing of MANET routing function. In this paper, effects of IDS for transmission performance on MANET under grayhole attacks which has intrusion objects for a part of transmissions packets, some suggestion for effective IDS will be considered. Computer simulation based on NS-2 is used for performance analysis, performance is measured with VoIP(: Voice over Internet Protocol) as an application service. MOS(: Mean Opinion Score), CCR(: Call Connection Rate) and end-to-end delay is used for performance parameter as standard transmission quality factor for voice transmission.

  • Computed Tomography Colonography (CTC) is a medical imaging technology used in identifying polyps and colon cancer masses in the large intestine. The technique has evolved a great deal since its invention and has become a routine diagnostic procedure in Western countries due to its non invasiveness and ease of use. The objective of our study was to explore the possibility of CTC application in Indian hospitals. This paper gives an overview of the procedure and its commercial viability. The explanation begins with the domain aspects from gastroenterologist perspective, the new way of thinking in polyp classification, the technical components of CTC procedure, and how engineering solutions have helped clinicians in solving the complexities involved in colon diagnosis. The colon cancer statistics in India and the results of single institution study we carried out with retrospective data is explained. By considering the increasing number of patients developing colon malignancies, the practicality of CTC in Indian hospitals is discussed. This paper does not reveal any technical aspects (algorithms) of engineering solutions implemented in CTC.
