  • This study was done to review problems in terms of statistical description and statistical application and analysis. Methods; The authors reviewed 42 statistical clinical study papers excluding 12 Overview papers, 75 Descriptive papers, 48 Animal studies out of 177 papers in the Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry in the 5 years from 2002 to 2006. Results : 1) 3 papers(7.1%) had no description of statistical method, only P-values, 25 papaers(59.5%) had tables without description of statistical method, 1 paper (2.3%) had no description of statistical method in study method. 2) 10 papers(23.8%) contained problems in terms of statistical application and analysis. 6papers (6/23, 26.0%) for Student t-test, 2 papers(2/7 28.6%)for $X^2$- test, 1 paper(1/15 6.7%) for the analysis of variance, 1 paper(1/6 16.7%) for Pearson correlation contained statistical problems. Conclusion : It was suggested that consultation of investigators with statisticians and more extensive statistical refereeing, the form of the guidelines for description and application of statistics are needed.

  • I propose new combined randomized methods for global optimization problems. These methods are based on the Nested Partitions(NP) method, a useful method for simulation optimization which guarantees global optimal solution but has several shortcomings. To overcome these shortcomings I hired various statistical selection methods and combined with NP method. I first explain the NP method and statistical selection method. And after that I present a detail description of proposed new combined methods and show the results of an application. As well as, I show how these combined methods can be considered in case of computing budget limit problem.

  • For the maritime traffic safety assessment of vessels navigating in harbor or fairway, simulation techniques by using shiphandling simulator system have been traditionally used. When designing the simulation experiments and when analyzing the simulation results, however, there has been a little systematic method. Ship-handling simulations can be regarded as a kind of statistical experiment by using ship-handling simulator system, which means that shiphandling simulation conditions should be designed statistically and that the simulation results should be statistically analyzed as well. For the safe and economic design of harbor and fairway, reasonable decisions based upon the scientific analysis of shiphandling simulation results are indispensable. In this paper, various statistical methods, such as Bayes theorem, statistical hypothesis testing, and probability distributions, are reviewed with a view to application to maritime traffic safety assessment. It is expected that more reasonable decisions on harbor and fairway design can be made from shiphandlers' view point by using statistical methods.

  • Principal component analysis is applied to reduce p-dimensions into q-dimensions ( $q {\leq} p$). Any partition of a collection of data points with p and q variables generated by the application of six hierarchical clustering methods is re-classified by discriminant analysis. From the application of discriminant analysis through each hierarchical clustering method, correct classification ratios are obtained. The results illustrate which method is more reasonable in exploratory data analysis.

  • Nowadays, from the study of quantitative linguistics, the application of quantitative method is located in a variety of fields as a necessary method. According to this phenomenon, the knowledge of statistical method is requisite for linguists. However, unfortunately, there still remain difficulties for them to acquire the statistical knowledge. So, it is needed for linguists to be helped by statisticians and their active roles. Accordingly, this study is going to emphasizing that statisticians should have more interests in the field of quantitative linguistics. Moreover, it will prove that by using statistical methods, analysis on the linguistic research becomes more objective and scientific.

  • In this paper, we considered an application of the bootstrap method for logit model. Estimation of type I error probability, the bootstrap p-values and bootstrap confidence intervals of parameter were proposed. Small sample Monte Carlo simulation were conducted in order to compare proposed method with existing normal theory based asymptotic method.

  • In this paper, we propose method-free permutation predictor hypothesis tests in the context of sufficient dimension reduction. Different from an existing method-free bootstrap approach, predictor hypotheses are evaluated based on p-values; therefore, usual statistical practitioners should have a potential preference. Numerical studies validate the developed theories, and real data application is provided.

  • This study aims at solving the problem in the application method of the comparative school record which is currently being discussed in depth among colleges. The application method of Kay O. Lee and Yeon Soo Cung(1997) which was appied in the 1999 Korean air force Academy Admission Process was found to be problematic in the following respects. First the setting of the standard which divides all the high schools in kora into five groups relative to their scholastic level is somewhat vague and subjective secondly the difference among those levels which resulted from the five grouping could greatly influence on the admission of the applicants and thirdly there is no standard in choosing those few promising individuals with high scholastic aptitude test results from the low level groups such as level four and five,. Therefore this study suggests and introduces a nationwide individual scholastic evaluation that would complement the limits and problems in the application method of the comparative school record.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find out that the statistical method of stockpile reliability of ammunition by items can be applied to the reliability assessment of stockpile ammunition. Methods: We reviewed the statistical method of stockpile reliability of ammunition by items and verified the possibility of its application by case study. Results: We found that the statistical method of stockpile reliability of ammunition by items is very useful and effective to present the reliability of ammunition based on each item and to predict the change of the reliability in the future. The reliability of proximity fuse was about 94.5% and was influenced by manufacture's year and the difference between lot and lot more than storage period. Conclusion: The statistical method of stockpile reliability of ammunition by items can be applied to the reliability assessment of various stockpile ammunitions such as ammunition for mortar and canon.

  • Purpose: In nursing research, studies using statistical methods are required and have increased. In this study, some statistical methods using in nursing study are summarized and appropriate usage is proposed. Methods: Twenty-five original articles from the Journal of Korean Academy of Fundamentals Nursing were reviewed. Statistical methods used in the Journal of Fundamentals Nursing were classified and common errors were presented. Results: Seventy-six statistical analysis were performed in the 25 studies. Among the articles, 28 cases contained errors. Most errors occurred in linear regression analysis and nonparametric analysis. Conclusion: When the use of statistical method is applied inappropriately, the result bring out a serious error. In order to ensure reliability and validity of study, researchers should recognize clear application and usage of statistical methods.
