  • FY2000, Japanese government has started three new projects on superconductive power application. Two are succeeding projects of flywheel energy storage and superconducting generator. The other one is fully new project on ac application of superconductivity. Therefore, there are four national projects in Japan on power application of superconductivity, including SMES project Though each project will be reviewed in detail in my talk, outlines are as follows; SMES : FY1999-FY2003, carried by ISTEC Superconducting generator: FY2000-FY2003, carried by Super-GM AC application: FY2000-FY2004, carried by Super-GM Flywheel energy storage: FY2000-FY2004 carried by ISTEC.

  • This paper is to present the general descriptions and their research trend of MRl/NMR which has already commercialized and also is more successful than any other applications of superconducting magnet, Superconducting Single Crystal Growing Equipment and Superconducting Magnetic Separation technology which are practically used in the related areas, and power electric application machine, which is the most effective and efficient one among the applications using high magnetic field. Therefore, it is hoped that this study will help to establish the ground of the industrial application of superconductivity in Korea.

  • A 1 MW class HTS (High-Temperature Superconducting) synchronous motor has been developed. This motor is aimed to be utilized for industrial application such as large motors operating in large plants. The HTS field coil of the developed motor is cooled by way of neon thermo siphonmechanism and the stator (armature) coil is cooled by water through hollow copper conductor. This paper also describes evaluation of some electrical parameters from performance test results of our motor, which was conducted at steady state in generator mode and motor mode. Open and short circuit tests were conducted in generator mode while a 1.1 MW rated induction machine was rotating the HTS machine. Electrical parameters such as mutual inductance and synchronous inductance are deduced from these tests. Load test was done upto rating torque during motor mode and efficiency was measured at each load torque.

  • As the load density of KEOCO system is higher, the fault current can be much higher than SCC(Short Circuit Capacity) of circuit breaker. Fault current exceeding the rating of circuit breaker is a very serious problem in high density load area, which can threaten the stability of whole power system. Even though there are several alternatives to reduce fault current, as the superconductivity technology has been developed, the HTS-FCL(High Temperature Superconductivity Fault Current Limiter) can be one of the attractive alternatives to solve the fault current problem. This study presents the application of 154kV HTS-FCL in Korean power system.

  • The standardization on superconducting application techniques has been focused only in testing method or material itself, but, recently, it is actively proceeded by superconducting technical committee(TC) of international electro technical commission(IEC). In this paper, the standardization organization and its necessary process is introduced and the standardization technique for 22.9kV, 50MVA HTS power cable is prescribed. Throughout this research, it is possible to take priorities on the standardization technique in HTS power cable application. And moreover it can also contributes to the commercialization of HTS power cable.

  • This paper describes the consideration of 154kV protective relaying systems for applying HTS(High Temperature Superconducting) power devices to Korean power system. We investigates firstly 154kV relay systems of Korean power system and then do a basic study on the relay systems in the power system with superconducting devices. For the more detailed result, the study using EMTDC relay system modeling will be done from the viewpoint of superconducting devices application in the future.

  • In Tokamak magnet for nuclear fusion, high current pulse type conductor is requested. Cable in Conduit type Conductor(CICC) is considered to be effective for this application because of not only high current but the high stability and mechanical strength. In this paper, the present status of conductor development for superconducting tokamak has been investigated.
