  • To examine applicability of some optical indices from reflectance to estimate photosynthetic light use efficiency, photosynthesis, and narrow band spectral reflectance were simultaneously measured at various intensities of light with mongolian oak leaves. Narrow band of the broad-band NDVI was better than photochemical reflectance index and simple ratio to estimate photosynthetic light use efficiency in this study. Changes in spectral reflectance were detected at several wavelengths (540nm, 690nm, 740nm, and 800nm) associated with physiological status of plant leaves that could be components for new optical indices.

  • Recently, the ratio of fuel cost to the operational cost of a ship is increasing according to the increase of the international oil price. Thus, many studies are being made to reduce the cost; for example, a method for acquiring the sea state information, a method for estimating fuel consumption, a method for determining the ship's optimal route, and so on. However, these studies were not incorporated together and being independently made in different fields. In this study, by improving and incorporating such studies, a method for determining a ship economic route based on the acquisition of the sea state and estimation of fuel consumption was proposed. To evaluate the applicability of the proposed method, it was applied to an optimal routing problem of the ocean area including many islands. The result shows that the proposed method can yield the economic route minimizing fuel consumption.

  • Recently, particle filters have attracted attentions for nonlinear state estimation. They evaluate a posterior probability distribution of the state variable based on observations in simulation using so-called importance sampling. However, degeneracy phenomena in the importance weights deteriorate the filter performance. A new filter, Evolution Strategies Based Particle Filter, is proposed to circumvent this difficulty and to improve the performance. Numerical simulation results illustrate the applicability of the proposed idea.

  • Recently, actor-critic methods have drawn significant interests in the area of reinforcement learning, and several algorithms have been studied along the line of the actor-critic strategy. In this paper, we consider a new type of actor-critic algorithms employing the kernel methods, which have recently shown to be very effective tools in the various fields of machine learning, and have performed investigations on combining the actor-critic strategy together with kernel methods. More specifically, this paper studies actor-critic algorithms utilizing the kernel-based least-squares estimation and policy gradient, and in its critic's part, the study uses a sliding-window-based kernel least-squares method, which leads to a fast and efficient value-function-estimation in a nonparametric setting. The applicability of the considered algorithms is illustrated via a robot locomotion problem and a tunnel ventilation control problem.

  • The Weibull family of lifetime distributions play a fundamental role in reliability engineering and life testing problems. This paper investigates the potential usefulness of transmuted new generalized Weibull (TNGW) distribution for modeling lifetime data. This distribution is an important competitive model that contains twenty-three lifetime distributions as special cases. We can obtain the TNGW distribution using the quadratic rank transmutation map (QRTM) technique. We derive the analytical shapes of the density and hazard functions for graphical illustrations. In addition, we explore some mathematical properties of the TNGW model including expressions for the quantile function, moments, entropies, mean deviation, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves and the moments of order statistics. The method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the model parameters. Finally the applicability of the TNGW model is presented using nicotine in cigarettes data for illustration.

  • The coefficient of consolidation has been evaluated using the conventional oedometer tests based on the one-dimensional consolidation theory. In the field, however, the actual response of the soil will be subject to the three-dimensional condition during consolidation. In this research, a new estimation method of the coefficient of consolidation for the various stress-deformation conditions was proposed. The good agreement between the computed dissipation of pore pressure and the measured data confirms the usefulness and the applicability of the proposed method to predict the exact rate of consolidation.

  • A number of methods based on various ideas have been proposed for simulating the non-Gaussian stationary process. However, these methods have some limitations. This paper reviewed several simulation methods based on the translation method using logarithmic and polynomial functions, which have emerged in the history of statistics and in the field of civil engineering. The applicability of each method is discussed from the viewpoint of the reproducibility of higher order statistics of the object function in the simulated sample functions, and examined using pressure signals measured from wind tunnel experiments for various shapes of buildings. The parameter estimation methods, i.e. the method of moments and quantile plot, are also reviewed, and the useful aspects of each method are discussed. Additionally, a simple worksheet for parameter estimation is derived based on the method of moment for practical application, and the accuracy is discussed comparing with a set of previously proposed formulae.

  • A four-parameter extended fatigue lifetime model called the odd Birnbaum-Saunders geometric distribution is proposed. This model extends the odd Birnbaum-Saunders and Birnbaum-Saunders distributions. We derive some properties of the new distribution that include expressions for the ordinary moments and generating and quantile functions. The method of maximum likelihood and a Bayesian approach are adopted to estimate the model parameters; in addition, various simulations are performed for different parameter settings and sample sizes. We propose two new models with a cure rate called the odd Birnbaum-Saunders mixture and odd Birnbaum-Saunders geometric models by assuming that the number of competing causes for the event of interest has a geometric distribution. The applicability of the new models are illustrated by means of ethylene data and melanoma data with cure fraction.

  • The appropriate fleet estimation of the excavation equipment is a major factor in the determination of the cost and time requirements of a project. But the decision of what kind of equipment selected is often based on heuristic methods or trial and error in Korea. Thus, this study proposes a prototype model that uses genetic algorithms to select fleet estimation of loaders (backhoe) and trucks used in excavation work. To verify the applicability of this model, the case study was performed. And the result of the genetic model was compared with that of the trial & error method. The use of the genetic model suggested this study required 44days, 2 units of backhoes, 7 units of trucks, and a total cost of 171,839,756 won. With the estimated fleet number of equipment, the minimum cost of excavation work can be calculated, taking account of the time-cost trade-off. By utilizing this prototype model, the efficiency of excavation work can be improved.

In this paper, first, the design methodology of HFC combined PID controller with fuzzy controller by membership function of weighting coefficient is proposed. Second, Second, an auto-tuning algorithms utilizing the simplified reasoning method and genetic algorithms is presented to improve the performance of hybrid fuzzy controller. Especially, in order to obtain the optimal scaling factors and PID parameters of HFC using GA based on advanced initial individual, three kinds of estimation modes such as basic, contraction, and expansion mode are effectively utilized. The proposed HFC is evaluated and discussed in ITAE, overshoot and rising time to show applicability and superiority with simulation results.
