  • Aphis gossypii Glover(Homoptera: Aphididae) is an serious pest on various crops. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of A. gossypii Glover on the growth of oriental melon and the plant recovery after removing A. gossypii. Visible damage symptom caused by A. gossypii feeding to oriental melon was leaf distortion and stunting. A. gossypii feeding for 20 days on oriental melon significantly reduced the growth of oriental melon with increasing A. gossypii density level. Plant growth was decreased by 63${\sim}$69%, 62${\sim}$88% and 49${\sim}$70% in plant height, leaf area and dry weight, respectively. During 10 day after aphids removal, the infested leaves remained stunt, however, new shoot and leaf recovered gradually. By 20 day, plant height, leaf area and dry weight substantially increased in 5 aphid per plant. Plant recovered rapidly with day and among aphid density level, 5 aphid per plant showed rapid recovery. When plant were infested with several density of aphid per plant, sugar contents of total leaves were not significantly different between aphid density level. Whereas, sugar contents of lear infested with aphid per leaf were decreased with increasing cumulative aphid-days.

  • The application of Beauveria bassiana SFB-205 supernatant incorporated with polyoxyethylene-(3)-isotridecyl ether (TDE-3) significantly reduced the population of two species of aphids including cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, and green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, much higher in cotton aphid, compared with supernatant incorporated with Tween 80, which allows the relationship of aphicidal activity with the degradation of aphid cuticles to be determined. Overall, the degradation of the cuticles induced by the supernatant was more remarkable in conjunction with TDE-3 than Tween 80, and this phenomenon was more observable in cotton aphid through SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, revealing high correlation with their aphicidal activities.

  • For the development of more effective insecticides for aphids, including the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover, control released insecticides were developed and tested as new type of formulation for the cotton aphid. Etofenprox is a target-of-control-released formulation that is toxic to insects with piercing-sucking type mouths including aphids and hoppers. The insecticidal effect of etofenprox is distinguished among others; however, continuance period of the effect of insecticide is shorter than other insecticides. In addition, the control effect of control released etofenprox on the cotton aphid was examined. The results show that control released etofenprox induced no control effects to the cotton aphid within 5 days of treatment. The cotton aphid's population was increased, and their reproduction rate was also high. However, control effect was shown to have very low levels 7 days after treatment, and it increased to higher effect. It is supposed that it is possible to control the cotton aphid using the type of control released etofenprox with a kitosan carrier. It is necessary to develop a more effective carrier type to release more of the insecticidal ingredient on the leaf after spraying.

  • Infestations of Aphis gossypii per leaf in greenhouse cultivation of cucumbers were investigated to develop binomial sampling plans. An empirical $P_T-m$ model, $ln(m)={\alpha}+{\beta}ln[-ln(1-P_T)]$, was used to evaluate relationship between the proportion of infested leaves with ${\leq}$ T aphids per leaf ($P_T$) and mean aphid density (m). Tally thresholds (T) were set to 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 aphids per leaf to find appropriate T in greenhouse cultivation of cucumbers. Increasing sample size had little effect on the precision of the binomial sampling plan. However, the precision increased with tally threshold. The binomial model with T = 5 provided appropriate predictions of the mean densities of A. gossypii in the greenhouse cultivation of cucumbers. Using a binomial model with T = 5 (sample size = 200), a wide range of densities (1.2 - 222.8 aphids per leaf) could be estimated with precision levels of 0.346 - 0.380 for $P_T$ values between 0.15 and 0.96. Binomial models were validated at T = 5 and 7 using 12 independent data sets. Both binomial models were robust and adequately described aphid densities; most of the independent sampling data fell within 95% confidence intervals around the prediction model.

  • This survey was carried out in order to find out population density of aphid at the alpine area. Thetraps were set from May 1 to October 31 in 1973. The summarized results are as follows; 1. About 37 species of aphids were trapped, including 4 species of potatao virus vectors. 2. Of these, dominant species are Aphis gossypii Koch, Aphis lerodendri Matsumura, and Lipahis erysimi Kaltenbaeh. The $67\%$ of 3, dominant species consisted of the trapped total aphids. 3. The potato virus vectors are Myzus persicae Sulzer, Aulacorhum solani Kaltenbach, Lipaphis erysimi Kaltenbaeh and Aphis gossypii Glover. 4. Tile number of aphids and vectors at the alpine area is considerably lower than that at the level land. 5. The peak of the flying aphid occurrence is shown in the latter part of September.

  • This is the fist report on detailed aphid transnsmission studies of cruciferous virus in Korea, and experiments aimed to get basic informations for control of vectors. Aphid transmission of turnip mosaic virus prevalent on radish in the field was studied. Results obtained were as follows: 1. Myzus persicae, Lipaphis erysimi, Aphis gossypii and Aphis craccivora were found to transmit turnip mosaic virus. 2. The proper time for turnip mosaic virus transmission by Myzus persicae was 1 hour of fasting, 3 minutes for acquisition, and 1 minute for inoculation: Lipaphis erysimi was 2 hours for fasting, 5 minutes for acquisition, and 3 miuutes for inoculation: while Aphis gossypii needed 1hour for fasting, and 3 minutes for each of the acquisition and inoculation periods. 3. There was Po great difference in probing patterns between nonfasted and fasted aphids for 2 hours. All the fasted aphids began feeding after 4 minutes, 4. When Myzus persicae were transferred artificially at 1-2 minute intervals, the number of probes with aphids fasted for 2 hours was much greater than that of nonfasted aphids. Aphids fasted for 2 hours mainly transmitted the virus before 4 minutes, with an acquisition feeing period of less than 3 minutes

  • Beauveria bassiana can be used as a biological insecticide to control a number of pests. It has been known as that B. bassiana TBI-1 have a insecticidal effect on the twospotted spider mite (Teranychus urticae) and the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum) these days. The biological pest control agent, B. bassiana, showed somewhat insecticidal activities against the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii, too. After treatment with biological insecticide, the mean of increasing rate of aphids was at around recorded at around 0.21 while at around 0.24 in non-treated TBI-1 biological insecticide condition during 1 week. Consequently, it was found that treatment of Beauveria bassiana reduced an increasing rate of aphid population. Also, we could visually observe dead aphids changed as a reddish mold due to this insecticidal fungus. B. bassiana TBI-1 can significantly reduce an increasing rate of aphid population, so effective biological control against the cotton aphid are possible.

  • The development of Aphis gossypii was studied at various constant temperatures ranging from 15 to 35$^{\circ}C$, with 60-70% RH, and photoperiod of 16:8 (L:D h). Mortality of A. gossypii was high in the early developmental stages, and at high temperatures. The total immature developmental period ranged from 4.6 to 11.5 days. The lower developmental threshold temperature and effective cumulated temperature for all immature stages were 5.0$^{\circ}C$ and 106.8 degree-day, respective. The nonlinear shape of temperature-dependent development was well described by the modified Sharpe and DeMichele model. The normalized cumulative frequency distributions of developmental period for each life stage were fitted to the three-parameter Weibull function.

  • Cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) and green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) are serious pests damaging various crops including vegetables such as pepper, cucumber, and Chinese cabbage. We conducted a study to control two aphids with secondary metabolite of entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana. A B. bassiana was already selected as a high virulence isolate against cotton aphid and green peach aphid. The culture filtrate of the isolate showed high pathogenicity against both aphids as 100% mortality against cotton aphid 3 days after treatment and 99% against green peach aphid 5 days after treatment. A different fraction extracts with $CHCl_3$ : MeOH of B. bassiana culture filtrate (30:1, 50:1, 70:1, 90:1, 100:1; v/v) through silica gel column chromatography showed different control effect to aphids. Among them, 50:1 ($CHCl_3$ : MeOH) fraction had highest mortality as 77.3% and 75.4% against A. gossypii and M. persicae, respectively. A mixture of each fraction (1:1) had no synergistic effects because control effect of every mixture was lower than only 50:1 extract; for example, mortality of 50:1 + 70:1 showed $2^{nd}$ highest as 72% of cotton aphid and 70.2% of green peach aphid and other mixtures were lower than these values. In future we will study the identification and mass production of aphicidal compound isolated from 50:1 fraction to develop stable aphid control agent.
