A Study on Application of Shaft-box Type Double Skin to Apartment Building (공동주택에 대한 Shaft Box형 이중외피의 적용에 관한 연구)

  • The balcony of our apartment building consists of unique construction similar to double skin. It is announced broadly that double skin is very effective system in improvement of natural ventilation and indoor thermal environment, and outdoor sound protection. So, for the improvement of indoor climate and energy saving, many peoples studied about environmental performance of our balcony construction. This study focus on shaft box facade, special form of box window construction. It consists of a system of box window with continuous vertical shafts that extend over a number of stories to create a stack effect. Proto-type was decided by analyzing various types of exiting apartments. Shaft box type balcony was created by setting up shaft space at a part of balcony. Air flow and contribution of air temperature were simulated, performance of shaft box type balcony was compared with existing balcony. Finally, we confirmed that shaft box type balcony has many possibility for improvement of indoor environment.

  • The percentage of apartment houses in residential buildings has increased every year, and it result in higher energy consumption of residential buildings. After the house law could be amended to legalize the remodeling of the balcony, buyers and contractors prefer to choose the balcony remodeling type when they choose a house for installment sale. Many construction companies design an apartment house considering balcony remodeling. So, this paper compares the balcony remodeling type with the basic type(prior to remodeling balcony) by using the building energy rating system tool. The balcony remodeling type consumes heating energies more than the basic type, and is unable to receive high rating. If the balcony is remodeled, it is required to improve the performance of wall and window and reduce the area of remodeling balcony.

  • In case of general residential house, photovoltaic can be installed at roof, wall, and any other places. But, in case of apartment building, there has not enough roof space to install photovoltaic panels to supply enough electricity. Actually, apartment building roof and facade wall (exclude the balcony window space) is not enough space to produce and supply the electricity to residents by installing PV panel. Generally, the space of facade balcony with windows in facade wall at apartment building occupied about $70{\sim}80%$, in all facade space. So, if we could use the balcony and windows space in facade as PV to generating electricity, there could contribute the energy saying. But, PV cell is opacify. So if it installed at front window area in apartment building, residents may have displeasure for that opacity character. But the other hand, residents are not always in house especially in day time that is exactly good time for generating electricity by PV. If we can use PV at the facade balcony with window without collusion of resident's displeasure, there have good attraction to using sustainable energy. Hence, this study suggests the design of facade balcony window style PV by considering resident's living pattern in apartment building. The methods of this study are as follows. At first, this study surveyed to the residents about residential time in their home and asked user demand by Delphi survey. At second, this study designed balcony open style PV system which oriented to the user demand. At third, this study tests designed result performance by computer simulation that compared design result with old design. As a result, For the purpose of satisfying the resident demand, there designed sliding window style which slide the several door systems to the one side. That would be make balcony absolute open scenery to the residents. Hence, the designed system performance results were as follows. When we compare the small apartment and large apartment, smaller one has good performance than larger one. Because resident's residential time characteristic. And that has more good electronic performance than vertical style that is similar to roof style.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide new design techniques for designers to design energy saving balcony in the apartment house using solar energy passively. These design techniques are examined with some samples of foreign buildings used solar energy passively. To classify these design techniques, this study sorts out the energy saving design elements from the preliminary studies. The results of this study show how to apply each design technique to the design of balcony in the apartment house and present a classification table of these techniques. Finally, this study suggests a design solution which can be applied in the design of balcony in existing apartment house.

  • Applying a life safety concept to apartment design procedure is essential to protect people from unwanted fire. A Balcony design in apartment is a important egress safety factor because it provide means of safe egress and can limit a flame spread to adjacent space from fire source.   • Analysis was carried out on the floor impact sound level between existing plan and enlarged plan with balcony remodeled. Because there is no standardized method to measure the floor impact sound for the apartment with balcony remodeled, two sets of sound source and receiver position were applied depending on whether it is enlarged or not. As a result, it is discovered that different positioning of sound source or receiver in the apartment with balcony remodeled could lead to different result.

Investigation of the sound insulation performance of balcony window through field measurement (현장측정을 통한 발코니 창호의 차음성능에 관한 연구)

  • As with the disappearance of a living room window due to the trend in apartment housing construction that prefers a larger, expanded living room, the sound insulation performance of the balcony window is becoming an important factor to determine the level of indoor noise at an apartment unit. Considering that the indoor noise inside an apartment unit is mandated by law at or below 45dB(A), the balcony window is increasingly assuming an even more important role. Sound insulation performance of the window was measured by examining differences in data involving varying angles of incidence of the sound source as obtained from the same balcony window. Also, acoustic intensity measuring was performed at and around the window to determine its sound insulation quality. Results of measuring on the sound source's angles of incidence indicated that the performance showed some differences in lower frequency ranges, though with no significance. Intensity measuring results showed that the sound insulation performance was reduced near the connection part of the window and the window frame.

  • The purpose of this study is to give some suggestions for the legal supplement of the regulation on the balcony expansion for the optimal use of apartment balcony. For the purpose, this study focused on the characteristics of spaces expanded to the balcony, in the plans supplied after the legalization of balcony expansion, comparing them by their location; the metropolitan area of Seoul Gyeonggi and the districts of the other areas. The 168 plans of apartments in the supplied by top 10 constructors in the metropolitan areas of Seoul and Gyeonggi, together with the 92 plans in the other smaller districts in 2006 to 2007 were analyzed with the tools of frequency and chi-square analysis. The result is as follows. (1) The region showed no difference in the plans of balcony; whereas the size, the position and access of the shelter explained some differences of balcony plan. (2) In wider plans, balconies were placed in all sides of plan-front, rear and side, and were remodeled to expand facing rooms. (3) The balcony expansion tended to increase the number of bays. (4) In almost cases, the living rooms were expanded to balcony. In smaller plans, the balconies were remodeled to supply supplementary kitchen space, splitting it from laundry. (5) The shelters were placed at the rear or side of plans, but the shelter facing room could be dangerous in case of fire. The balcony expansion, despite of legalization spirit to adopt diverse use of additional spaces for residents' needs, was only a tool for the space expansion. The amendment of the regulation is needed to accommodate these findings that the balconies should be identified by their function, that the front corridor-type balcony should be limited in length and magnitude, and that the shelter should be positioned with easy access.

  • Along with the legalization of balcony extension, numerous contractors have been suggesting designs for apartment houses based on the residents desire for balcony extension. It has been investigated that most residents prefer the balcony extension due to the increase in space. However, numerous residents have been experiencing problems occurred due to the extension such as air conditioning and heating cost and sound insulation problems. Therefore, this study aims to suggest an objective decision making tool for the residents that aids the residents decision making on balcony extension considering pros and cons of balcony extension.

  • Due to the supply of standard plans disregarding the occupant's of apartment houses preference, the renovation of balcony has frequently been increasingly performed. As a result, the renovation has caused a loss of national economy and many problems. Existing research studies related to the balcony renovation discussed the implement plans on rate and types o( renovation. However the loss cost by balcony renovation has never been researched. This study, therefore, estimated renovation cost by surveys and analyzed the causes of renovation with regard to the selling methods of companies, awareness of occupants and re131e0 regulations.'rhis study proposes a guideline for the rebuilding the balconies of apartment houses to minimize a loss of national economy.
