To assess the antioxidative activity of 12 medicinal plants on lipid peroxidation, twelves traditional medicinal plants extracted with 95% methanol were investigated the antioxidative activity using DPPH, thiocyanate acid method, and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods. Out of 12 medicinal plants extracted with methanol, the extraction yields of Sedum kamtschaticum was the highest values (49.46%) among them and Geranicum sibiricum, Saururus chinensis root (R), Agrimonia pilosa leaf (L), Agrimonia pilosa root was the lowest value (9.97%). Radical scavenging effect of the selected traditional medicinal plants extracted from different extract solution were examined by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical method. Antioxidative activity of methanolic extracts was higher than those of ethanol and n-hexane extracts. Scavenging effects in Sedum kamtaschaticum (R) determined by DPPH radical showed the highest among the 12 plants. The antioxidative effects of the first four medicinal plants were similar to those of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), but higher than that of tocopherol, which was used as a handled control. Antioxidative effects of each indicated concentration of the methanolic extracts on linoleic acid by thiocyanate method was the highest in Sedum kamtschaticum and followed by Geum japonicum and Agrimonia pilosa and their antioxidative effect were similar to those of BHA, and BHT, but higher than that of tocopherol. Antioxidative effects of the selected medicinal methanolic extract on linoleic acid by thiocyanate acid method were examined for 15 days. Peroxidation of control and tocopherol group occurred on days 5 and 9, respectively, but BHA, BHT, selected medicinal methanolic extract group did not occur until on day 15. Antioxidative effects of the selected medicinal methanolic extract on linoleic acid by TBA method were examined for 15 days. Antioxidative activity was similar to those obtained by thiocyanate acid method.
This study was carried out to investigate some antioxidative effects of stewed pumpkin juice (SPJ) and the SPJs added with ginger (SPJ-G), onion (SPJ-O), jujube (SPJ-J) or boxthorn (SPJ-B), respectively, on the lipid oxidation of soybean oil (S) and mackerel pike boiled ground (MPBG). Antioxidative substances of SPJ were extracted by using the two solvent layers of n-hexane:acetone (1:1)(H) and methanol:water (7:3)M. The antioxidative effects of the extracts were observed by the peroxide value (P.O.V.) and thiobabituric acid (T.B.A.) value. The P.O.V. and T.B.A. value of two solvent extracts of S and MPBG showed significantly lower than those of S and MPBG. The SPJ showed very distingnished antioxidative effects. It was considered that melanoidine extracted by using methanol:water (7:3) solvent as well as carotenoid extracted by using n-hexane:acetone (1:1) solvent had an antioxidative effect. During storage, T.B.A. value of MPBG significantly increased, while that of MPBG-SPJ significantly decreased more than that of MPBG. T.B.A. value of MPBG-SPJs decreased much than that of MPBG-SPJ, SPJ-O, SPJ-G, SPJ-J and SPJ-B, in order of abundance, showed higher level of antioxidative effects than SPJ. Mackerel muscle protein hydrolysates, which were prepared from defatted mackerel meal by proteases such as complex enzyme, alcalase, bromelain, pancrease, pepsin, w-chymotrypsin, trypsin and papain, were tested for the antioxidative action against linoleic acid. Among proteases tested, the hydrolysates obtained from the treatment of complex enzyme, bromelain and alcalase showed higher antioxidative effects. Also, the hydrolysates showed the synergistic effects with o-tocopherol and the inhibitory effects for peroxidation of metal ions(Fe3+, Cua+) From the profiles of fractionation of the hydrolysates with Bio-gel P-2 column, the most active fractions, part I(complex enzyme-derived) and part e(bromelain-derived), had below MW 1,400 and the antioxidative effects were closely related to the binding capacity with metal ion(Cua+). Amno acid composition of the part I was abundant in histidine, arginine, phenylalanine and lysine, and the part e was abundant in lysine, glutamic acid and leucine.
Free radicals formed during the metabolism of environmental chemicals are known to induce mutagenicity, while different types of antioxidants suppress this event. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidative and antimutagenic effects of soybean saponins, and to examine the relationship between these two effects for the elucidation of mechanisms involved in the anticarcinogenicity of soybean saponins. Also, antioxidative and antimutagenic effects of soybean saponins were compared with those of kinown antioxidants. For the measurement of antioxidative capacity, soybean saponins, L-ascorbic acid, $\alpha$-tocophoerol, and BHT at concentrations between 005 and 1.0mg/ml were tested for their ability to donate hydrogens and to reduce the formation of thiobarbituric substances(TBARS). Antimutagenic activity was examined using the Ames salmonella test system at concentrations of 600, 900 or 1200ug/ml. Study results showed soybean saponins and all of the other antioxidants tested possessed dose-dependent antioxidative activities. The ability of hydrogen-donation to DPPH was in the order of L-ascorbic acid>$\alpha$-tocopherol=>BHT>soybean saponins. TBARS formation was also inhibited by these compounds, in the order of BHT>$\alpha$-tocopherol=L-ascorbic acid>soybean saponins. Soybean saponins and other antioxidants also showed antimutagenicity in a dose-dependent manner. Especially, soybean saponins and BHT were excellent antioxidants compounds, inhibiting near 80% of the mutagenic effects at a concentration of 1200ug/ml. The correlation coefficients between antioxidative capacity and antimutagenicity for each compund was statistically significant at p<0.05. These results indicate that soybean saponins possess antioxidative and antimutagenic capacities. Also, antimutagenicity of saponins and other antioxidats is partly due to their antioxidative activities.

In recent year, We are concerned about anti-aging, disease-prevention, longevity, so many methods are used in solving this problem. And Those are related with antioxidative ability. Recently, We heard that Mori Cortex was known to reduce the hypertension and was helpful in promoting health, and Mori Ramulus was effective against obesity, etc. So, This study was performed to investigate the antioxidative effect of hot-water extracts of Mori Cortex and Mori Ramulus used for 3 methods, those are DPPH radical scavenging activity, Nitric oxide(NO) radical scavenging activity and Bovine serum albumin(BSA). And we compared Mori Cortex and Mori Ramulus on Antioxidative Effects. The results of this study were as follows: We measured levels of DPPH radical scavenging activity and Nitric oxide(NO) radical scavenging activity. And we obtained results that Mori Ramulus was most effective with the concentration of 5 $mg/m{\ell}$, and Mori Cortex was most effective with the concentration of 2.5 $mg/m{\ell}$, And we examined the antioxidative effects of Mori Ramulus and Mori Cortex with $CU^{2+}/H_20_2$-induced Bovine serum albumin(BSA). And we obtained that antioxidative ability was increased after 1.25 $mg/m{\ell}$ and that was most effective with the concentration of 5 $mg/m{\ell}$ on both of them. And antioxidative ability of Mori Cortex was better than Mori Ramulus(p<0.05). So I guess that hot-water extracts of Mori Ramulus and Mori Cortex have effects on antioxidative ability, but Mori Cortex is better than Mori Ramulus on antioxidation. Hereafter we need differential experimental methods of antioxidative effect on both of them.
This study was designed the antioxidative effect of the ethanol extract obtained Rooibos tea (Aspalathus linearis) on various kinds of oil, and examined the synergistic effect of Rooibos tea extract by addition of citric acid to the antioxidation activity and also investigate to antioxidation effect of the extract in food production and storage peroids. The antioxidative activity of 0.2mg of Rooibos tea extract was showed similar to same doses of $\alpha$-tocopherol, BHA and BHT in linolieic acid-ethanol system. The antioxidative effect of the mixture with 0.1% Rooibos tea extract on lard was more effective than that of the mixture with same doses of $\alpha$-tocopherol, BHA and BHT. The antioxidative effect of Rooibos tea extract was showed slightly effects on lard or soybean oil. Antioxidative effects of Rooiboe tea extract in addition of citric acid as synergist showed more effective in linoleic acid-ethanol system, but did not showed in the other oils. In the application of Rooibos tea extract to food prodctuction and storage period, the antioxidative effect was more effective in biscult, preparation added lard mixed with 0.1% Rooibos tea extract.
To develop antioxidant substances in plant, phenolic compounds in Bangah (Igodon japonicus, Hara) and antioxidative effects of cell extracts were investigated. Defatted samples of Bangah were extracted with acetone/methanol and the extracts were fractionated Into the free and bound types of phenolics. The equal amounts of fractions were dissolved In soybean oil and autoxidized at 45$^{\circ}C$ for 25 days. Peroxide value and TBA values were determined every 5 days during oxidation. Changes of peroxide and TBA values showed antioxidant effects, which were lower than control during the oxidation periods. The effects of cell extracts were evaluated as high as BHT, 0.02 ppm. The antioxidative effect of insoluble-bound phenolic extract was higher than that of free. The contents of phenolic compounds in insoluble-bound fraction were also higher than free fraction.
Objectives : Ulcerative colitis is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disease in the gastrointestinal tract. We investigated whether Aurantii fructus immaturus (AFI) pharmacopuncture has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. Methods : in vitro experiments, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, prevention on $H_2O_2$-induced cell death in RAW264.7 cell line, DNA fragmentation, and cyclooxygenase-2 mRNA expression induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), were analyzed to investigate antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effect of AFI pharmacopuncture. in vivo experiment, a murine model of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis was used to examine the effect of AFI pharmacopuncture on CV12 at different doses of 5 ${\mu}l$, 0.5 ${\mu}l$, 0.05 ${\mu}l$ for 10 days. Body weight, colon length and macroscopic features were investigated. Results : AFI pharmacopuncture showed DPPH free radical scavenging and SOD active effects in a dose-dependent manner. AFI pharmacopuncture showed a protective effect against $H_2O_2$-induced cell injury and also attenuated LPS-induced COX-2 mRNA expression. In a DSS- induced colitis murine model, however, AFI pharmacopuncture at CV12 had no anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusions : The present results suggest that AFI pharmacopuncture extract may have anti- inflammatory and antioxidative effects in vivo test, but further research on the underlying mechanism is required.
The water extract of Cichorium intybus (WECI) showed a remarkable antioxidative effect on LDL, and inhibitory effects on the production of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance and the Degradation of fatty acids in LDL. Vitamin 1 and unsaturated fatty acids in LDL were protected by adding WECI from the effects of metal catalyzed LDL oxidation. From the results obtained, we conclude that LDL oxidation is inhibited in vitro by the addition of WECI, and that LDL is protected by WECI from oxidative attack, as shown by agarose gel electrohporesis.

Oxidative stress has been reported to be one of causes of neuritis. This study examined antioxidative activities of methanol extracts of six amphibian species known to be medicinal animals (Rana catesbeiana, R. coreana, R. rugosa, R. dybowskii, R. nigromaculata, and Hyla japonica) and investigated their effects of inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) production and cytotoxicity on the murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells. As inflammation is closely associated with reactive oxygen species, assays on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity, superoxide anion radical scavenging activity and NO scavenging activity of the extracts of the six species were performed to investigate their antioxidative activity. The results obtained were as follows; All extracts showed antioxidative activity, and the activity of R. dybowskii was the highest in comparison among those. Anti-inflammatory effects of the extracts were also examined, the five extracts except that of R. rugosa did not show cytotoxicity for RAW264.7 cells at the maximal concentration ($1,000{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$). Selectivity index, meaning NO scavenging activity compared to cytotoxicity, showed the highest level in the extract of R. dybowskii. These results will be very useful basic data for future studies on prevention and treatment of human diseases to understand the biological roles of amphibian extracts throughout the antioxidative or anti-inflammatory pathways.
