Background: This study determined the effects of mulching, an environment friendly organic cultivation method, on antioxidant compound contents and growth in Codonopsis lanceolata, commonly known as Deodeok. Methods and Results: C. lanceolata was treated by mulching with several different methods (a non-woven fabric, biodegradable film, or rice husks) and also treated with hand weeding. A non-treatment plot was used as a control. The growth and levels of weed control in C. lanceolata were better in plants cultivated under mulching treatments (non-woven fabric, biodegradable film, and rice husks) than in those under non-mulching treatments (hand weeding and non-treatment). The contents of antioxidant compounds, such as total flavonoids, phenolics, and anthocyanins, were highest under the biodegradable film treatment, followed by the non-woven fabric treatment, rice husks treatment hand weeding, and non-treatment. There were identifiable differences in DPPH and ABTS activity in comparison to antioxidant compound content by solvent fractions. Mulching treatments resulted in higher DPPH scavenging activity in water and ethyl ether fractions and ABTS scavenging activity in n-butanol fractions than in other fractions, as opposed to hand weeding and non-treatment groups, although total activity of DPPH and ABTS did not increase with mulching treatments. Conclusions: Mulching C. lanceolata with biodegradable film and non-woven fabric is an effective method for improving plant growth and inhibiting the occurrence of weeds as well as for increasing antioxidant compound content and altering antioxidant activity.
In this study, we tried to examine the possibility of developing a dental product such as tooth decay prevention and oral hygiene by manufacturing a natural polymer film for oral use. Natural polymer films were prepared from shark byproduct extract (SBE) and gellan gum (GG). As an antibacterial substance, the antibacterial activity of green tea extract against tooth decay-causing bacteria was measured. An film was prepared by adding green tea extract to the composition of SBE and GG. The mechanical, solubility, moisture content and antibacterial function of the prepared film were investigated in detail. Also, the incorporation of GTE into the SBE/GG film improved the physical performance of the film. Increasing the content of GTE improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film. Formulation of antimicrobial SBE/GG film containing green tea extract was established and these results evidently showed potential for cavity prevention products application.
Al-laminated packaging film incorporating ascorbic acid or tocopherol at inner food contact layer was tested in the potential to improve antioxidative preservation of powdered infant formula under CO2-enriched atmosphere. Product of 200 g was packaged with the packaging film containing 0.3% antioxidant in sealant layer of low density polyethylene and stored at 30℃ for 286 days with periodic measurement of package atmosphere and product's quality attributes. The CO2-flushed package resulted in shrinkage of tight contact between the product and the film not allowing gas sampling of package atmosphere after 140 days. Package of tocopherol-incorporated film allowed some ingress of oxygen after 112 days presumably due to its weakening of heat-seal area. The increased oxygen concentration in the tocopherol-added film package led to the concomitant increase of peroxide value, an index of lipid oxidation. On the other hand, packaging of ascorbic acid-added film pouch could suppress lipid oxidation marginally in consistent manner compared to control package without any antioxidant.

Sea urchin skeleton (SUS) generated from production of sea urchin eggs was used as a biodegradable film base material, and its composite film with gelatin was prepared. In addition, Robinia pseudoacacia flower extract (RFE) was incorporated into the film-forming solution to provide antioxidant and anti-microbial activities. The tensile strength (TS) of the SUS/gelatin composite films increased with increasing gelatin content, whereas elongation at break (E) decreased. Among the composite films, SUS/gelatin film at a ratio of 8:2 (w/w) exhibited the most desirable TS and E values. Furthermore, SUS composite film containing RFE showed a reduced TS and increased E compared to the control film. Based on 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assays and disc diffusion results against growth of Listeria monocytogenes, antioxidant and anti-microbial activities of films increased with increasing RFE concentration. Consequently, SUS composite film containing RFE showed proper physical properties as well as antioxidant and anti-microbial activities. These results indicate that SUS can be used as a film base material while the SUS composite film containing RFE can be utilized as active packaging.

To elucidate the effect of protein films containing an antioxidant on lipid oxidation of fish paste products during storage, zein and soy protein isolate (SPI) films containing green tea extract were prepared and their physical properties were examined. Tensile strength and elongation of the protein films decreased by the addition of green tea extract compared to the control. Due to the addition of green tea extract, SPI film had an increase in yellowness, but zein film had a decreased yellowness. Wrapping of fried fish paste products by the zein and SPI films containing the antioxidant retarded lipid oxidation at 2 day storage by 3.6 mg MDA/kg sample and 3.6 mg MDA/kg sample, respectively, for instant fish paste compared to the control. For processed fish paste, they decreased the degree of lipid oxidation by 1.6 mg MDA/kg sample and 0.6 mg MDA/kg sample, respectively.
To assay for antioxidant capacity of natural products considered important in producing human health benefits, a practical and economical method using pellet techniques was developed. A standard visualizing reagent, 1,1diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), was mixed with a water-miscible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), serving as a solid phase support for the DPPH reagent. A DPPH pellet was prepared by dropping a small volume of the DPPH solution onto PET film, and drying in an oven. The PVA-based DPPH pellet was dissolved into water, in which the water-miscible PVA plays as a non-ionic surfactant to help the DPPH reagent to be dissolved into the solvent. Using the DPPH assay, the antioxidant capacity of water-soluble extracts of black soybean, barley, green tea, and green gram was examined. Among the natural products tested, green tea showed the highest antioxidant capacity. This PVA-based DPPH antioxidant assay can be further applied in the natural food, raw plant material, and health product inspection field.
Tuna skin byproduct extract (TSB) was used as a biocompatibility film base material, and its composite film with gellan gum (GG) was prepared. In addition, Pinus thunbergii cone extract (PTCE) was incorporated into the film to provide anti-oxidant and anti-bacteria activities. The tensile strength (TS) of the TSB/GG composite films increased with increasing GG content, whereas elongation at break (E) decreased. TSB/GG film at a ratio of 0.5:0.5 (w/w) showed the most desirable TS and E values. Based on scavenging free radical potentials and disc diffusion method results against growth of bacteria, antioxidant and anti-bacteria activities of films increased with increasing PTCE concentration. Accordingly, this study showed that TSB/GG could be used as a film material while the TSB/GG composite film containing PTCE can be utilized as functional packaging.
Objective: This study was carried out to investigate physicochemical properties, and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of low-fat sausages (LFSs) covered with sodium alginate (SA) film alone and with powder film (TSA-film) formed by cross-linking cherry tomato powder (CTP) and SA with calcium chloride (CaCl2). Methods: Sausages covered with the biodegradable film were assessed based on the measurement of pH, color (L⋆, a⋆, b⋆), proximate analysis, expressive moisture (EM), texture profile analysis, total plate counts (TPC), violet red bile, and 2-Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) during storage under refrigeration. LFSs wrapped with TSA-film were compared with those wrapped with SA-film and without film (control) during storage at 10℃ for 35 days. Results: The LFSs covered with the mixed film had lower pH, lightness (L⋆), EM%, TBARS, and TPC, but lower yellowness (b⋆) and hardness values than those wrapped with TSA-film alone. Conclusion: Lipid oxidation and microbial growth was retarded in sausages covered with biodegradable films, especially multiple films as compared to single film, thereby resulting in extended shelf-life of the LFSs.

Corn fiber protein (CFP) was extracted from corn wet-milling by-product, corn fiber. CFP films containing various plasticizers and cross-linking agents were prepared and their mechanical properties were determined. Among the plasticizers and cross-linking agents used in this study, the CFP film containing 2 g fructose and 0.03% cinnamaldehyde had the most appropriate physical property. In addition, the CFP films containing green tea extract (GTE) were prepared by incorporating different amounts (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5%) of GTE into the film-forming solution. Tensile strength, film solubility, and opacity of the CFP films increased with the addition of GTE, whereas elongation and water vapor permeability of the CFP/GTE films decreased compared to those of the control. The antioxidant activity of the CFP/GTE film was determined in terms of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity. As a result, antioxidant activity of the films increased with increasing GTE concentration. Furthermore, antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus increased with increasing GTE concentration. These results indicate that the incorporation of GTE could enhance antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the CFP films.

The effect of packaging materials on the quality and physiological activity of Angelica acutiloba leaves during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 20 days and after being transferred to room temperature for 2 days was studied. The experiment was conducted using three packaging materials: the corrugated box (control); corrugated box with $20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner; and corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner. Changes in weight, color, aroma, overall visual quality, antioxidant activity, and total flavonoids were investigated. Based on the result, the treatments using corrugated box with $20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner and the corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner, were effective in minimizing weight loss, and maintaining external color and overall quality as compared to corrugated box only (control). The corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner was more effective in maintaining antioxidant activity and total flavonoids than other treatments. Prolonging the freshness using corrugated box with paraffin wax coated paper $+20{\mu}m$ HDPE perforated film liner could increase the marketability of Angelica acutiloba leaves in the domestic market.
