As consumption of kimchi has increased, factories have begun to produce this traditional Korean fermented vegetable dish on a large scale. Following the rise in manufacturing, the hygienic conditions under which commercial kimchi is being made have become an issue. We isolated 17 coliform bacteria from commercial kimchi that had not been fully fermented. These bacteria were partially identified as one of seven different species from three genera by 16S rDNA sequence analysis as follows: Enterobacter intermedius, Ent. cloacae, Ent. amnigenus, Klebsiella terrigena, K. ornithinolytica, K. oxytoca, and Hafnia alvei. Lactobacillus paraplantarum KNUC25 has been isolated from over-fermented Chinese cabbage kimchi and its antimicrobial activity reported in the literature. In our study, the KNUC25 strain showed antibacterial activity against isolated coliform bacteria and some pathogenic coliform bacteria through spot-on-the-lawn tests and viable cell tests. Through development and use of a cell-free supernatant of L. paraplantarum KNUC25, we effectively controlled coliform bacteria in commercial kimchi.

In the sewage structures and wastewater facilities, concrete is exposed to hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) which acts as an acid material in a solution, and a strongly acidic sulfate ion ($SO{_4}^{-2}$) is generated by a sulfuric bacteria. Hence, a degradation of concrete with biochemical corrosion would be accelerated. Finally, durability of concrete and concrete structures may be greatly reduced. In this study, in order to remove the hydrogen sulfide which is used by the sulfuric bacteria organic-biologically, the antibiotic metal and metallic salt powders were mixed to concrete, and a suppressing performance of the sulfate ion was assessed. For the sulfuric acid bacteria, a comparative evaluation of antimicrobial performance on neutralized concrete specimens were carried out, also by a rapid chloride penetration test, chloride penetration depths and diffusion coefficients were measured for antibiotic concrete in accordance with the amount of metal and metallic salt-based antibacterial agents. Eventually, by an observation of the biochemical state of the surface of concrete specimens exposed outdoors, the performance and applicability of antibiotic concrete were confirmed.
We investigated the phenotypic characteristics by using API20E, APIZYM and determined minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 7 antibiotics in motile aeromonads isolated from freshwater fishes in Korea and Japan, and 4 American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) strains. All isolates (n=7) were identified as motile Aeromonas species according to API20E test. Lysine decarboxylase activity and acid production from 4 different carbohydrates including mannitol, rhamnose, amygdalin and arabinose were observed in various strains. In enzymatic activities by APIZYM, all isolates showed negative reactions in valine and cystine arylamidases, α-chymotrypsin, α-galactosidase, β-glucuronidase, α-glucosidase, α-mannosidase and α-fucosidase. Although the intensities of each enzymatic activity were diverse in alkaline phosphatase, esterase-lipase, leucine arylamidase, β-galactosidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, all isolates showed positive reactions. All isolates were resistant to ampicillin sodium (MIC>100㎍/ml), but sensitive to chloramphenicol (MIC≤1.6㎍/ml). However, recently isolated strains (AC9804, AC0202 and GMA0361) were commonly resistant to tetracycline (MIC=50㎍/ml). Furthermore, AC9804 was resistant to oxolinic acid (MIC=12.5㎍/ml). GMA0361 was resistant to kanamycin sulfate (MIC>100㎍/ml) and streptomycin sulfate (MIC>100 ㎍/ml).

Most purulent maxillofacial infections are of odontogenic origin. Treatment of infection includes the surgical intervention, such as incision and drainage, and adjunctive treatment. The use of high-dose antibiotics is also indicated. The choice of an antibiotics should be based on the knowledge of the usual causative microbes and the results of antibacterial sensitivity test. We have undertaken clinical studies on 119 patients in Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Inha University Hospital from January 2000 to December 2007. Many anaerobic microbes are killed quickly when exposed to oxygen. Thus the needle aspiration techniques and the transfer under inert gas were used when culturing. The aim of this study was to obtain informations for the bacteriologic features and the effective antimicrobial therapy against maxillofaical odontogenic infections. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The most frequent causes of infections were odontogenic (88.3%), and in odontogenic cause, pulpal infections were the most common causes(53.8%). 2. The buccal and submandibular spaces (respectively 23.5%) were the most frequent involved fascial spaces, followed by masticator spaces (14.3%). 3. The most common underlying medical problems were diabetes (17.6%), however the relation with prognosis was not discovered. 4. The complications were the expiry, mediastinitis, necrotizing fasciitis, orbital abscess, and osteomyelitis. 5. The most common admission periods were 1-2 weeks, and the most patients were discharged within 3 weeks. However, patients who admitted over 5 weeks were about 10%. 6. A total of 99 bacterial strains (1.1 strains per abscess) was isolated from 93 patients (78.2%). The most common bacterium isolated was Streptococcus viridans (46.2%), followed by $\beta$-hemolytic group streptococcus (10.1%). 7. Penicillins (penicillin G 58.3%, oxacillin 80.0%, ampicillin 80.0%) have slightly lower sensitivity. Thus we recommend the antibiotics, such as glycopeptides (teicoplanin 100%, vancomycin 100%) and quinolones (ciprofloxacin 90.0%) which have high susceptibility in cases in which peni cillin therapy failed or severe infections.
To investigate bioactive materials for development of natural conservative agent on organic cultural heritage, methanol extracts from 11 wood species which populate in Korea were screened for antifungal and insecticidal activity against 9 wood contaminant fungi and adult of Lasioderma serricorne. Antifungal activity of extracts was tested by using paper disc soaking method and feeder strip test against wood-rot fungi and wood surface contaminant fungi. Among these extracts, the most significant antimicrobial activity was observed from the extract of Phellodendron amurense at 5 mg/disc against Coniophora puteana, Lentinus lepideus, Tyromyces palustris and Aspergillus niger. The insecticidal activity of extracts was examined by topical application against L. serricorne adults. The extracts from Taxus cuspidata and Abies holophylla gave 56.7 % mortality at 25 ${\mu}g$/adult for 24 hr. From these result, the methanol extract from T. cuspidata, A. holophylla and P. amurense described could be useful for conservation of organic cultural heritage against biological deterioration by insect and wood contaminant fungi.
In this study BGn-incorporated non-fluoride release of pit and fissure sealant $Concise^{TM}$ was developed to improve the mechanical properties and promote antibacterial effect of fit and fissure sealant with the original material. The mechanical properties and antibacterial activity of BGn incorporating vary-ing amounts bioactive glass nano particles(BGn) (0,0.5,1.0 and 2.0 wt% in sealant) were characterized composition of the resulting were investigated. The solubility to aid absorption was calculated by weighing specimens with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 2 mm according to ISO 4049 (2009). The antimicrobial effect was evaluated using three strains of S. mutans, S. aureus and E. coli. The absorbance of the test results was as high as the addition of BGn increased, and the lower the solubility as the solubility was added(p<0.05). Adhesion experiment results S. mutans in contrast to the control group $Concise^{TM}$, BGn-added experimental group showed a somewhat lower adherent surface but no statistically significant difference was observed (p<0.05). However S. aureus and E. coli statistical analysis indicated a significant difference for antibacterial agents between control and BGn containing(p<0.05). It seems that this BGn proved that even a antibacterial effect was demonstrated. Therefore, it was suggest that the additional effects of BGn and research on a wide range of substances.

Machilus thunbergii has been showed relation to antimicrobial activity on minimal inhibitoty concentration (MIC) and colony forming inhibitory activity (CFIA) test, so that can be used to food preservatives for green vegetable. Nanoparticles has been made of edible materials. 80% of the nanoparticles has been characterized by image analyser and electron microscopy, showing in the range under 300 nm diameter. The sprayed nanoparticles remained on the surface of chicon even after washing by dilution water, then activate biological activities for storage of chicon with storing and releasement system of extracts. Chicon treated nanoparticle has been kept fresh condition about 2 months longer than 3 weeks of the non-treated control. It can be tell that treatment with nanoparticle of M. thunbergii extracts extends storage time of chicon possibly by inhibition of ethylene production through efficiency control on cell breathing.
It is well known that many antimicrobial proteins in saliva interact with each other. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the interactions of lysozyme with peroxidase in the aspects of enzymatic activity in vitro. The interactions of lysozyme with peroxidase were examined by incubating hen egg-white lysozyme(HEWL) with bovine lactoperoxidase(bLP). The influence of peroxidase system on lysozyme was examined by subsequent addition of potassium thiocyanate and hydrogen peroxide. Lysozyme activity was determined by turbidity measurement of a Micrococcus lysodeikticus substrate suspension. Peroxidase activity was determined with an NbsSCN assay. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to analyze the changes of enzymatic activities compared with their controls. bLP at physiological concentrations enhanced the enzymatic activity of HEWL(P < 0.05) and its effect was dependent on the concentration of peroxidase. However, HEWL did not affect the enzymatic activity of bLP. Thiocyanate did not affect the enzymatic activity of HEWL, either. The addition of potassium thiocyanate and hydrogen peroxide did not lead to additional enhancement of the enzymatic activity of HEWL. The changes of hydrogen peroxide concentration in the peroxidase system did not affect the enzymatic activity of HEWL. Collectively, despite an in vitro nature of our study, the results of the present study provide valuable information on the interactions of lysozyme and peroxidase in the aspects of enzymatic activity in oral health care products and possibly in the oral cavity.
Background: Extended-spectrum ${\beta}$-lactamases(ESBL) are enzymes that confer resistance to oxyimino-${\beta}$-lactams as well as to penicillins and cephalosporins. Strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli that produce ESBL have been increasingly prevalent in many countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ESBL production rate of K. pneumoniae and E. coli at the in Yeungnam University Medical Center. Materials and Methods: Thirty-one isolates of K pneumoniae and twenty-five isolates of E. coli were examined for ESBL by double disk synergy test, using 20/$10{\mu}g$ ticarcillin/clavulanic acid and $30{\mu}g$ oxyimino-${\beta}$-lactam(ceftazidime, ceftaxime, ceftriaxone and aztreonam) disks. Results: Fifty-two percent of K. pneumoniae and sixteen percent of E. coli isolates revealed double disk synergism. Majority of ESBL-producing strains(fifty-five percent) were isolated from patients in the intensive care unit. Conclusion: ESBL production of K. pneumoniae and E. coli were also common at the Yeungnam University Medical Center and pose a serious problem for antimicrobial therapy.
During 2 years from Octorber 1992 to April 1994, prevalence of general respiratory diseases and atrophic rhinitis in the pig herds located in the Western Chungnam was investigated, and isolation of B. bronchiseptica was attempted for the pigs manifested with the clinical signs of atrophic rhinitis(AR). The isolates were characterized and identified in aspects of biochemical properties, antigenicity, drug sensitivity and pathogenicity. The results obtained through the experiments are summarized as follows; 1. During 2 years of investigation, the overall prevalence of the general respiratory diseases in the pi8 herds in Western Chungnam was 35.3%, consisting of 35.1% in the pig farms and 38.8% in a slaughter house. The prevalence by age groups accounts for 9.2% in adults, 44.7% in rearings and 25.3% in sucklings. By farm size, The highest prevalence of 56.5% was observed in the smallest farm with 1 to 200 heads. 2. The prevalence of clinical cases of artrophic rhinitis was recorded by 12.7% in the group that is the sows and piglets vaccinated, 28.9% in the group that is the sows only vaccinated and 39.8% in the group of the non-vaccinated groups. In the slaughter house, 53(24.8%) of 214 pigs examined exhibit the AR lesions. 3. A total of 189 strains of B. bronchiseptica were isolated from the pig herds. Isolation rates were 12.6% in the group that is the sows and piglets vaccinated, 34.1% in the group that is the sows only vaccinated and 45.7% in the group of the non-vaccinated groups. Isolation rate in the specimen from the slaughter house was 93( 43.5% ) of 214 pigs examined. Of the AR-non-vaccinated group, the piglets aged bet- ween 61 to 90 days revealed the highest isolation rate of 58.5%. 4. The titers of antibody against B. bronchiseptica were measured by tube agglutination test. The group that is the sow and piglet-vaccinated showed the highest titer of 640-2, 560 in sow and 640longrightarrow5, 120 in piglet. The group that is the sows only-vaccinated revealed 640-2, 560 in sows and 640-1, 280 in piglets. Both of the vaccinated groups showed 100% positive reaction. The group of the non-vaccinated sho-wed relatively lower titer of 0-1, 280 in both of sows and piglets. The positive rate of the sera obtained from the slaughter house was 53.3% with the antibody titer of 0-1, 280. 5. Biochemical and serological properities of 189 isolates were very similar to those of the reference B. bronchiseptical phase I type, indicating that most of isolates are B. bronchiseptica phase I type. 6. In antimicrobial drug susceptibility, 87.3% of 189 isolates was susceptible to chloramphenicol, 79.9%, to amikacin, 64.6%, to cephalothin and less than 35.4% to others. 7. In agar-gel immunodiffusion and SDS-PAGE analysis, the isolates presented the identical antigenicity and protein profiles to the reference standard strains. 8. The whole cells and bacterial filtrates of the isolates were inoculated to guinea pigs and mice. The isolates showed the hish pathogenicity and dermonecrotoxiciy.
