  • It is advisable to use irrigation solutions which have strong antibacterial effect and weak cytotoxic effect on treating root infections. Streptococci are ones of the most frequently isolated microorganisms in infected root canals. The antibacterial effect of ten irrigation solutions were investigated on S. mutans (19449), S. sanguis. )10556) and 4 streptococci isolated from saliva of healthy persons. These streptococci were exposured to irrigation solutions during 10 sec, 30 sec,. 1 min, 3 min, 5 min, 10 min, 30 min and 2hrs respectively. Four irrigation solutions which showed strong antibacterial activity were diluted to 1 : 1 to 1 : 10,000. Then they were subcultured on blood agar plate an observed after 1 day. 5.25% NaOC1 had the strongest antibacterial effect. 30% urea and normal saline showed no antibacterial effect. 50 % citric acid and 3% $H_2O_2$ showed relatively weak antibacterial effect. 15 % EDTA had very weak antibacterial effect.

Characterization of Antibacterial Activity and Synergistic Effect of Cationic Antibacterial Peptide-resin Conjugates

  • We synthesized peptide-resin conjugates (1 and 2) by immobilizing ${\beta}$-sheet antibacterial peptide and ${\alpha}$ helical antibacterial peptide on PEG-PS resin, respectively. Conjugate 1 showed considerable antibacterial activity in various conditions, whereas conjugate 2 did not exhibit antibacterial activity. The growths of various bacteria were inhibited by conjugate 1 even at lower concentrations than MIC. Conjugate 1 killed bacteria at MIC and had a potent synergistic effect with current antibacterial agents such as vancomycin and tetracycline, respectively. Overall results indicate that polymer surface modification using antibacterial ${\beta}$ sheet peptide is a powerful way to prevent microbial contamination on polymer surfaces.

  • The antibacterial effect against cariogenic bacteria was evaluated in combination of 5-FC and intracellular cytosine deaminase from Chromobacterium violaceum YK 391. While S. mutans, L. parabuchneri and A. naeslundii showed antibacterial effect against 10 mM of 5-FU, S. intermedius, S. mitis, S. agalactiae, L. lactis, A. israelii, A. viscosus don't caused antibacterial effect. The addition of the cytosine deaminase and 10 mM of 5-FC to S. mutans, S. sanguis, L. brevis, L. parabuchneri, L. oris and A. naeslundii caused weakly antibacterial effect. S. sanguis caused weakly antibacterial effect against 10 mM of 5-FC. These results suggested that combination of the cytosine deaminase and 5-FC was showed the possibility to precautionary measures of dental caries.

S. mutans에 대한 대나무 숯의 항균력에 관한 연구 (Antibacterial effect of bamboo charcoal on Streptococcus mutans)

  • Objectives : The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of bamboo charcoal on Streptococcus mutans which is one of the most important causative agents of dental caries. Methods : S. mutans was incubated with or without bamboo charcoal and then changes were observed in its cell viability and antibacterial effect. Oral epithelial cells viabillity(human gingival fibroblast, HGF) was performed using MTT assay. Antibacterial effect was analyzed using a dilution plating method and agar diffusion method. Results : Oral epithelial cells, human gingival fibroblast (HGF) showed a tendency to increase in bamboo charcoal treatment solution concentrations(0.5, 1, 2, 3, 5, 10%). The bamboo charcoal had an antibacterial effect on S. mutans. Antibacterial effect of bamboo charcoal for the bacterium was 58%. Charcoal concentration of 2% and 5% in the inhibition zone showed a minimal growth, but the concentration of 10% bamboo charcoal in inhibition zone revealed a conspicuous antibacterial activity. Conclusions : Overall results suggested that the bamboo charcoal proved to be bactericidal effect on S. mutans.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 L. monocytogenes에 대한 LP system의 항균효과를 측정하기 위하여 수행되었다. 초기 접종수준($10^{2},\;10^{4},\;10^{7}\;CFU/ml$), LP의 농도는 (10, 20, 30ppm), 그리고 저장온도(5, 10, $15^{\circ}C$), 배지종류(TSB-YE, UHT milk) 에 따라 Listeria monocytogenes에 대한 항균 효과를 측정 비교한 결과 초기접종수준을 $10^{2}\;cfu/ml$로 하였을때와 LPshd도는 10ppm 및 $5^{\circ}C$로 배양에서 항균력이 높게 나타났다. UHT milk를 이용한 LP system의 항균 효과는 Tryptic soy agar를 이용한 시험결과와 비슷하게 나타났다.

자초 추출액을 이용한 염색직물의 항균성 및 소취성 (The Antibacterial Activity and Deodorization of Fabrics Dyed with Lithospermi Radix Extract)

  • This study shows the colorfastness, antibacterial activity, and deodorizing effect about cotton and silk fabrics dyed with Lithospermi Radix Extract. In the case of colorfastness, the light colorfastness showed the lowest grade, the other colorfastness was relatively good. However there are some differences according to fabrics and mordants. In the case of antibacterial activity to Staphylococcus aureus, the cotton fabrics had the most antibacterial effect at the dyed fabrics that had been mordanted SnC1$_2$ㆍ2$H_2O$, and the silk fabrics had the most antibacterial effect at the dyed fabrics that had been mordanted A1($CH_3$COO)$_3$. In the case of deodorizing effect, the cotton fabrics showed the most deodorizing effect at the dyed fabrics that had been mordanted SnC1$_2$ㆍ2$H_2O$, and the silk fabrics showed the comparatively high antibacterial effect at the dyed fabrics that had been mordanted both SnCl$_2$ㆍ2$H_2O$ and Al($CH_3$COO)$_3$.

고효율 항균 필터의 항균력 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on Antibacterial Assesment of High Efficiency Antibacterial Air Filter)

  • Recently, interest in hygiene has been arouse in the health care field. Consequently, Filters with antibacterial agent applied to improve air quality by sterilizing bacteria, fungi, etc. We actually installed antibacterial air filter containing 2.5wt%Ag zeolite on the air intake route to air-conditioner in passenger cu, and evaluated filter's performance on antibacterial effect. By the microbe liquid spattering method, we found that the antibacterial air filter has notably sufficient antibacterial efficiency against standard strains and wild type strains. Antibacterial effect was observed at whole area of filter media by zone of inhibition test. The evaluation of microbe quantity was conducted through mixing dilution plate culture method. In comparison with ordinary filter, the amount of germs attached on antibacterial air filters was larger. The amount of germs attached on ordinary filters was very small since ordinary filters contained less dust. In comparison in antibacterial air filter with thickness, the amount of germs attached on 9mm filter was smaller than that of on 6mm filter. i.e. thicker filter, superior efficiency.

Antibacterial Activity and Inhibitory Effect of Biofilm Formation by Actinidia polygama against S. mutans and P. gingivalis

  • In oriental medicine, the fruit of Actinidia polygama has long been used to alleviate the symptoms of gout, arthritis, and inflammation. In this study, it was to designed to analyze the antibacterial activity of A. polygama ethanol extract (APEE) against Streptococcus mutans, one of the major strains for dental caries, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, one of the critical strains for periodontal disease. The antibacterial activity of APEE was analyzed by disk diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays. In addition, it was also analyzed the inhibitory effect of APEE on bacterial growth and biofilm formation against both oral pathogens. APEE exhibited its antibacterial effect through the inhibited bacterial diffusion as well as low concentration of MIC and MBC. In addition, APEE significantly inhibited not only bacterial growth but also biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner. Consequently, APEE showed potent antibacterial activity against both S. mutans and P. gingivalis, which indicates that APEE might be used as a potential antibacterial material for the improvement of oral healthcare.

산약(Disocorea batatas) 에탄올추출물의 L. gasseri, S. mutans, P. gingivalis에 대한 항균능과 성장억제 효과 (Antibacterial Effect of Dioscorea Batatas Ethanol Extract Against L. gasseri, S. mutans and P. gingivalis)

  • Purpose : In this study, to prove the antibacterial effect of Disocorea batatas, which is widely used for food, and to confirm the growth inhibitory effect, the antibacterial activity against L. gasseri, S. mutans, and P. gingivalis was verified. Based on this, it is intended to verify the utility as a preventive and therapeutic composition for dental caries and periodontal disease. Methods : RAW 264.7 cells were used to verify the cell survival rate and NO (Nitric Oxide) inhibitory effect on Disocorea batatas ethanol extract (DBEE). In order to verify the antibacterial effect against L. gasseri, S. mutans, and P. gingivalis, concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 ㎎/㎖ of DBEE were used and measured by the disk diffusion method. In order to confirm the growth inhibitory effect, the absorbance was measured at 600 ㎚ at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 hours using the liquid medium dilution method, and the growth inhibitory effect was measured compared to the control group. Results : The cell viability for DBEE was 91 % at 50 ㎎/㎖, and there was no cytotoxicity. The NO production inhibitory effect was shown from 10 ㎍/ml, and the higher the concentration, the greater the inhibitory effect. As for the antimicrobial effect using the disk diffusion method, the higher the concentration, the higher the antibacterial effect. At 125 ㎎/㎖ and 250 ㎎/㎖, S. mutans and L. gasseri showed high antimicrobial activity, and at 500 ㎎/㎖, the antibacterial effect was higher in L. gasseri. The growth inhibitory effect in DBEE was concentration-dependent as the higher the concentration, the higher the growth inhibitory effect, and all of them began to show growth inhibitory effects from 6 hours. Conclusion : Considering that it is widely used as an edible and medicinal material, Disocorea batatas has shown the potential to be used as a substance to prevent and alleviate dental caries and periodontal diseases, and it is believed that further research can be applied to oral health care products.

객차용 고효율 항균 기능성 필터에 관한 연구 (A Study of high Efficiency anti-Bacteria Filters for Passenger Car)
