  • Polyphenolic compounds are reported to have various pharmacological activities such as anti-oxidative, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects. Although numerous papers explore their functional roles in many different cellular actions, not many studies handle their structural features in anti-inflammatory responses. In this study, therefore, we examined structural role of substituted transstilbenes in their NO inhibitory and NF-${\kappa}B$ suppressive activities. Of 10 compounds tested, 4 compounds (cinnamic acid, resveratrol, piceatannol and curcumin) displayed NO inhibitory activities in a dose-dependent manner. Similarly, these compounds blocked LPS-induced cytotoxicity of RAW264.7 cells. All NO inhibitory compounds also inhibited $I{\kappa}B{\alpha}$ phosphorylation, a hallmark for NF-${\kappa}B$ activation. However, these inhibitory compounds exhibited distinct suppressive pattern in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$- or phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-induced NF-${\kappa}B$ and AP-1 activation. According to structure-activity relationship study, polarity and size of ring B seem to be important for diminishing NO production. Therefore, our data suggest that substituted trans-stilbenes can be developed as novel anti-inflammatory drug or further developed as lead compounds for another improvement.

  • Polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids are wide spread in the plant kingdom, and interested recently because epidemiological studies have suggested correlations between the consumption of polyphenol-rich plant foods and the prevention of chronic diseases. Soy is a main source of isoflavonoids which are high dietary intake for the oriental population. In this study, anti-inflammatory action of sophoricoside, an isoflavone glycoside isolated from immature fruits of Sophora japonica (Leguminosae family), has been demonstrated. (omitted)

  • Environmental stressors like pathogens and toxins may depress the animal immune system through invasion of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) tract, where they may impair performance and production, as well as lead to increased mortality rates. Therefore, protection of the GIT tract and improving animal health are top priorities in animal production. Being natural-sourced materials, phytochemicals are potential feed additives possessing multiple functions, including: anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-viral and antioxidative properties. This paper focuses on immunity-related physiological parameters regulated by phytochemicals, such as carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, curcumin, and thymol; many studies have proven that these phytochemicals can improve animal performance and production. On the molecular level, the impact of inflammatory gene expression on underlying mechanisms was also examined, as were the effects of environmental stimuli and phytochemicals in initiating nuclear factor kappa B and mitogen-activated protein kinases signaling pathways and improving health conditions.

  • Studies were undertaken to develop for the anti-inflammatory analgesic activities of 'Insam-Tang' extract, which composed of four crude drugs; Ginseng Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Atractylodis Rhizoma, and Zingiberis Rhizoma, was known to be applied in edema, convulsion, excremental blood, and cooling pain etc, in oriental herb remedies. It was exhibited significant anti-inflammatory effect on carrageenin inflammation, and preventive and therapeutic effects to chronic inflammation on Freund' complete adjuvant in rats, Especially, therapeutic effect of extract 500mg/kg was observed more effective than that of phenylbutazone 50mg/kg. Also, it was shown significant effect on leakage of dye into the peritoneal cavity and analgesic effect on squirm symptom induced by acetic acid in mice.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang' and parched 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang' on anti-inflammatory and antiulcerative actions, and motility of isolated intestine of mice. The results of this study were summarized as follows; Anti-inflammatory effect was showed markedly by the administration of water extract of 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang' and parched 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang'. Isolated intestine of mice was relaxed with the treatment of 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang' and parched 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang' and intestinal contraction induced by $BaCl_2$ and acetylcholine was also inhibited. The water extract of 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang' and parched 'Jakyakgamcho-Tang' were significantly inhibited Shay's ulceration in rats.

  • In the previous studies. we confirmed the anti-inflammatory components of Kalopanax pictus bark using activity-guided fractionation in vivo. For the elucidation of anti-inflammatory mechanism, we evaluated the effects of these components on the inhibition of NF-$\sub$K/B activity and human leukocyte elastase. A cell-based assay system developed in our laboratory was used in transfectant RAW 264.7 cells. (omitted)

  • Sakuranetin, prunetin and dihydroquercetin were isolated from the methanol extract of Sorbus commixta by 1D/2D-NMR and LC-MASS spectrometry. Medicating these compounds to RAW264.7 cell that was pre-treated by lipopolysaccharide revealed anti-inflammatory effects that greatly inhibited the production of NO (nitric oxide) and PEG2 (prostaglandin E2), which are well known to cause the expression of iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase) and COX-2 (Cyclooxygenase-2). These results suggest that these compounds can be used as stable anti-inflammatory materials.

  • This paper presents anti-inflammatory effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and their copper complexes, and the change of content of copper in serum, liver, brain and edema foot induced by 1% carrageenan in rats, and also investigation of stomach hemorrhage. The results were as follows. 1. The content of copper decreased in liver and brain, however, the concentration of copper significantly increased in serum and edema site after carrageenan injection in rats. 2. The content of copper in serum and edema site was decreased after administration of anti-inflammatory drugs. 3. Edema inhibition rate of aspirin was, higher than that of copper (II) aspirinate, but edema inhibition rate of copper complex of naproxen was markedly higher than that of naproxen. 4. Hemorrhage of stomach of copper salicylate was higher than that of sodium salicylate, but hemorrhage of stomach of sodium naproxen was higher than that of copper naproxen.

  • Experiments were carried out to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of Caragana chamlagu $L_{AMARCK}$ roots, which was known to be effective as antineuralgic, antirheumatic and antiarthritic, etc. in the folk cures of this country. The ether extract of the root has shown significant effects against the rat paw edema induced by 1% carrageenin and its potency was comparable with acetylsalicylic acid, a anti-inflammatory drug, when given orally in 5% acacia gum suspension. The ethanol and hexane extracts, on the other hand, stimulated the formation of rat paw edema under the same experimentation.
