In order to introduce new functions onto textile fabrics, nylon and cotton were treated with green tea extracts. And then the anti-oxidant activity of fabrics treated with the extracts was evaluated by Blois method using DPPH ($\alpha$, $\alpha$-diphenyl- $\beta$-picrylhydrazyl). The anti-oxidant activity was exhibited on the textile fabrics treated as well as by the extracts itself. The cotton fabric treated with 10% o.w.f. of extract appeared to have almost 90% of anti-oxidant activity and 95% was obtained for nylon.
Many herbs have been used as therapeutics in Korean traditional medicine. In view of their clinical indications, anti-oxidant activity may contribute to their pharmacological effects. However, anti-oxidant information on these plants has not been available. In this study, seventy herbs which have been used in Korean traditional medicine were selected and screened for anti-oxidant activity using their water extracts. The anti-oxidant activity was assessed by their ability to inhibit three oxidation reactions; luminol/Fenton reagent, 2, 7-dichlorodihydrofluorescein(DCHF)/Fenton reagent and DCHF/peroxynitrite. In each assay, 70 herbs were divided into two groups; anti-oxidant group which inhibited the respective oxidation reaction and was majority(about 60 herbs), and pro-oxidant group which enhanced the oxidation reaction but was minority(more or less 10 herbs). When the herbs were listed in the order of their anti-oxidant strength, the orders obtained from each assay were found to be quite similar. The upper top rankers(more or less 10 herbs) in each assay showed strong activity compared to the others. The uppermost rankers in each assay were Rubus coreanus Miquel/Rubus schizostylus(覆盆子), Schisandra chinensis Baillon/Schizandra chinensis(五味子) and Terminalia chebula Retziusl Terminalia chebula(訶子). Of the pro-oxidant herbs, about 4-5 herbs were strongly pro-oxidant, which enhanced the control oxidation reactions to 150-300%. But the meaning of this observation is not known since few of them in one assay were also anti-oxidant in other assays. The results obtained in the present study may serve as information for understanding pharmacological effects of these herbs and developing new drugs from them.
The study was conducted to identify the anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects in sprouts of mouse-eyed bean (Rhynchosia nulubilis), ginseng (Panax ginseng), perilla (Perilla frutescens), broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica), and lettuce (Lactuca sativa) grown with organic germanium concentrate. Western blot analysis was performed to assess the anti-inflammatory activity of the extract. All extracts exhibited noticeable anti-oxidant activity, indicating a significant correlation between the germanium content and anti-oxidant activity (p<0.05). In particular, rat-eyed bean sprouts with the highest germanium content showed significant anti-inflammatory activity (p<0.05) by significantly inhibiting the expression of the inflammatory complexes, NLRP3, cytokines IL-1β and caspase-1. Ginseng and broccoli sprouts showed strong anti-cancer properties and had high anti-oxidant effects (p<0.001). Germanium-concentrated water allows the mass production of agricultural products containing high concentrations of organic germanium. Agricultural produce grown with germanium concentrate add organic germanium to various physiological active ingredients, increasing the anti-oxidant and anti-cancer effects. These results strongly suggest that agricultural products containing high germanium concentrations can be used as novel health supplements to improve health.

We previously showed that the root extract of Paeonia lactiflora Red Charm might have anti-oxidant activities, however it was not clear which components might be involved in this activity. Our boinformatics analysis indicated the root extracts of Paeonia lactiflora Red Charm has a couple of potential anti-oxidant materials. One of them is paeoniflorin. We hypothesized that one of components present in Paeonia lactiflora Red Charm, paeoniflorin and its derivatives might be related to anti-oxidant activity. In this study, we compared paeoniflorin and its derivatives with the root extract of Paeonia lactiflora Red Charm using DPPH assays to measure its antioxidant activities. Paeoniflorin showed the highest radical scavenging activity(%) in $1000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. its derivative showed the high levels radical scavenging activity(%) in $600{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $800{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, $1000{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ similar to ascorbic acid. Taken together, these results suggest that Paeoniflorin and its derivatives may play a role in anti-oxidant acitivity in the root extracts of Paeonia lactiflora. Much of future studies may be needed to develop a potential new anti-oxidant candidates with anti-aging and anti-cancer effects.

A standardization of evaluation method of anti-oxidant activity for fabrics was studied. And then 1mM of DPPH solution was the most suitable condition. Also, it is enough to react anti-oxidant reaction in approximately 90 minutes. So we studied anti-oxidant activity for nylon and cotton treated with green tea extracts. The cotton fabrics treated with 10% o.w.f. of extract appeared to have almost 90% of anti-oxidant activity and 95% was obtained for nylon.
To investigate the effect of ethanol extract of Saxifraga stolonifera MEERBURGH on skin care, we measured anti-oxidant and anti-aging activity. S. stolonifera ethanol extract itself had anti-oxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner in DPPH radical scavenging. Silica dose-dependently increased the intracellular ROS generation in RAW 264.7 cells. S. stolonifera ethanol extract inhibited silica-induced intracellular superoxide anion generation, $H_2O_2$ and hydroperoxide generation in RAW 264.7 cells. S. stolonifera ethanol extract significantly inhibited both hyaluronidase and elastase activity, also significantly inhibited MMP-1(collagenase) activity as well. In NIH 3T3 fibroblast cells, S. stolonifera ethanol extract significantly increased collagen-like polymer synthesis, which suggesting the S. stolonifera ethanol extract might be used as hydration and anti-wrinkle agents. From the above results, it is suggested that the main ingredients of S. stolonifera ethanol extract play an important role in anti-oxidant and anti-aging activity.

This study evaluated the anti-oxidant activity of avicularin and isovitexin from Lespedeza cuneata using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl (OH) scavenging assays. The results showed that among the four fractions, the highest OH radical scavenging activity was exhibited by the n-butanol fraction. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of avicularin and isovitexin were higher than 50% at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. Moreover, one hundred micrograms per liter of avicularin and isovitexin exhibited effective anti-oxidant activity, with the OH radical scavenging rates being 87.54 and 91.48%, respectively. These results suggest that Lespedeza cuneata would be useful anti-oxidant agents from natural sources.
