  • Recently, anti-fouling paints which does not include the poison components such as tin(Sn), copper(Cu) have been increasingly developed in order to inhibit the environmental contamination of the sea water. Moreover, the wear ratios of these anti-fouling paints are very important problem to prolong their life time in economical point of view. In this study, five types of anti-fouling paints as self polishing type were investigated on the relationship between their polarization characteristics and wear ratios. It was verified that there was apparently a good relationship between the wear ratio and polarization characteristics, for example, the wear ratio increased with increasing the impedance ratio, and increased or decreased with the corrosion potential shifting in the negative or positive direction respectively. In addition, the wear ratio decreased with decreasing the corrosion current density. Consequently, it is suggested that we can qualitatively expect the wear ratio by only measuring the polarization characteristics. Therefore, before the examination of the wear ratio was actually carried out in the field, the evaluation of polarization property in the laboratory may give a available reference data for their developments.

  • In this study, the mechanical property of anti-fouling coating using CNF was evaluated to prevent the durability and stability of structure exposed the marine environment. Anti-fouling coating using CNF was prepared by CNF, AKD and waste glass powder, and contact angle test, drying time, viscosity analysis and microstructure were performed. When coating on one number of times, It was showed to relatively high hydrophobic performance in steel. And It was confirmed that the contact angle increased as the content of AKD increased in cement mortar. When coating on three number of times, the surface was confirmed super-hydrophobic at maximum of 151.6°. When mixing waste glass powder, the surface was showed to relatively high hydrophobic. It is pseudo plastic fluid when CNF and distilled water were prepared in a ratio of 1:1, And Anti fouling coating is judged to be suitable for use as coating on marine structure.

  • Polyethersulfone (PES)/sulfonated $TiO_2$ ($STiO_2$) nanoparticles (NPs) UF blended membranes were fabricated with different loadings of $STiO_2$. The modified membranes exhibited significant improvement in surface roughness, porosity, and pore size when compared to the PES membrane. The $P-STiO_2$ 1 and $P-TiO_2$ 1 blended membranes exhibited higher water flux, approximately 102.4% and 62.6%, respectively, compared to PES. SPP-$STiO_2$ and $P-STiO_2$ showed lower Rir fouling resistance than the $P-TiO_2$ blended membrane. Overall, the $STiO_2$-blended membranes provide high hydrophilicity permeability, anti-fouling performance, and improved BSA rejection attributed to the hydrogen bonding force and more electrostatic repulsion properties of $STiO_2$.

  • There are many difficulties to supply constant power to marine facilities which operate in the sea. Especially, there is a limit to stand alone power supply systems due to the influence of weather conditions. That's why a hybrid power supply system is required to overcome these problems. This paper will describe an Electronic Anti-Fouling System (EAFS) to maximise the power efficiency for a solar - wave hybrid power generation system. A main factor reducing the efficiency of a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) is due to the attachment of aquatic life forms. Therefore the aim of this research is to develop a simulation programme to enable the design of more efficient EAFS for hybrid power generation systems and to provide valuable data for production of more efficient EAFS.

  • When the fouling of a vessel occurs, its resistance at sea increases and there is a corresponding increase in fuel consumption. The maintenance cost of the vessel also increases because it is time-consuming to remove the fouling. To solve this problem and minimize environmental contamination of sea-water, there have been recent developments in anti-fouling paints as self-polishing copolymers that not include toxic elements such as tin. When these conventional techniques are applied to vessels, polishing is promoted during the operation whereby friction or vibration with seawater occurs. This leads to enhanced anti-fouling performance. However, when fouling is intensified such as during an anchorage, there is no flow of seawater and polishing is suppressed. This leads to a deterioration of the performance of anti-fouling. To solve these problems, we developed a system that induces vibration in a vessel during anchorage. As such, the deterioration of polishing due to insuf icient flow of seawater is inhibited. The reliability of the ultrasonic antifouling system was evaluated by calculating its repeatability. The removal efficiency of fouling of the proposed system was qualitatively evaluated using test specimens. The test revealed that the value of the coefficient of variation for the reproducibility of the frequency and amplitude was 0.2 % and 4.0 % on average. The degree of fouling of the specimens was the highest at 73.3 g in the No.5 sepcimen. Moreover, efficiency of fouling removal was 93.2 % on average compared to the specimens without the proposed system.

  • Bio-fouling has positive aspects that are used as a fish resource, but there are also negative aspects such as corrosion of the surface of the support structure, aesthetics and work safety problems. A specimen was produced using a polyurea material with excellent anti-fouling and methodology, and contact angle, high water pressure, adhesion, and real sea area tests were performed. As a result of measuring the contact angle of the specimen with a 10 cm x 10 cm area of polyurea, There was found to be an average of 124.4 ° at nine points. No surface damage was found even above 5 Mpa when high water pressure was sprayed, and adhesive strength of 300LSE adhesives was confirmed between 22.84 and 23.04 Mpa with an adhesion test. During the 6-month real sea area test, it was confirmed that about 17.24 % of the polyurea film was less generated than the comparison group.

  • Effects of material surface property, hydrophobic or hydrophilic, on the bio-fouling occurred on the bodies submerged in the sea water are investigated experimentally. 4 test models are used in the experiment, which includes aluminum foil in common use, AAO applied hydrophobic surface, HDFS coated hydrophobic surface and hydrophilic surface. Hydrophobic surfaces with numerous micro & nano-scale pillars on it seems to play very important role of preventing them from fouling in initial stage while the effects disappear in long term sense of fouling process. It is concluded that the surface hydrophobicity retards the initial fouling until the fouling thickness is smaller than the heights of the pillars on it but the effects diminish with the fouling proceeds so that the thickness grows bigger than the pillar heights.

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of physical water treatment (PWT) technologies using different catalytic materials and an electronic anti-fouling device in the mitigation of mineral fouling in a once-through flow system with mini-channel heat exchanger. Effects of flow velocity and water hardness on the effectiveness of PWT technologies were experimentally studied. The artificial water hardness varied from 5.0 to 10 mo1/m$^{3}$ as CaCO$_{3}$. For 10 mo1/m$^{3}$ solution, fouling resistance reduced by 13-40$\%$ depending on flow velocity and types of PWT devices. On the other hand, fouling resistance reduced by 21-29$\%$ depending on the PWT devices for 5 mo11m3 solutions. The PWT device using alloy of Cu and Zn as catalyst (CM2) was slightly more effective than the others. SEM photographs of scale produced from the 10 mol/m$^{3}$ solution at 1.0 m/s indicated that calcium carbonate scales without PWT devices were needle-shaped aragonite, which is sticky, dense and difficult to remove. Scales with the PWT devices showed a cluster of spherical or elliptic shape crystals. Both the heat transfer test results and SEM photographs strongly support the efficacy of PWT technologies using catalytic materials and an electronic anti-fouling device in the mitigation of mineral fouling.
