  • Objectives : Betula platyphylla var. japonica extract (BPE) was used to determine the modulation of cytokine secretion, the activation of inflammatory and allergic factor and the inhibition of gene expression. Inflammatory and allergic cytokines as IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-${\alpha}$, NO and COX-2 were measured to use effectively on improvement or treatment of atopic dermatitis. Methods : We used NC/Nga mouse induced by atopic dermatitis to observe the effects of BPE on the weight, water and feed, blood test, weight of organs, histological change, total IgE and histological change of main organs. Results : BPE is effective on anti-inflammatory and allergic reaction. However, further study is needed to prove which component of BPE indicates effective pharmacological action. Conclusions : The above results suggest that Phellinus igniarius Quel extract could be applicable for improvement of several skin functions.

  • In folklore medicine Drymaria cordata Willd (Family-Caryophyllaceae) is reported to have laxative and anti-febrile properties along with anti-inflammatory activities. Sikkimis used this plant to treat all these ailments. The anti-inflammatory effect of the methanol extract of D. cordata was investigated against carrageenin, histamine, serotonin, dextran and $PGE_1$ induced rat hind paw oedema. It exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activity against all these phlogestic agents except $PGE_1$ in the order of carrageenin > serotonin > histamine. All these effects were compared with standard drug phenylbutazone in both the acute and chronic experimental models in albino rats.

  • The anti-inflammatory activity of acetylsalicylic acid maltol ester (aspalatone), a potential anti-thombotic agent, was studied using the several experimental animal models of inflammation. By oral administration, aspalatone was found to possess the weak anti-inflammatory activity in models of an acute inflammation, in which aspalatone showed approximately one-third to one-fourth of the anti-inflammatory activity of aspirin. Aspalatone (200 mg/kg/day) and aspirin (50 mg/kg/day), however, did not show the inhibitory activity against granuloma fomation and adjuvant-induced arthritis.

  • The aim of this study was to gain information on the effects of the crystal form of corticosteroids on the topical anti-inflammatory activity. Two different crystal forms, Form A and Form B, of the drugs of prednicarbate, hydrocortisone, betamethasone 17-valerate, prednisolone, and methyl prednisolone were prepared and their topical anti-inflammatory activities were measured using arachidonic acid induced ear edema assay in mice. Two crystal forms of the drugs showed differences in anti-inflammatory activity. Among the drugs examined, Form B of prednicarbate and betamethasone 17-valerate showed significantly more potent anti-inflammatory activities as compared to their Form A.

  • Many diselenide compounds are used as antioxidants, enzyme inhibitors and cytokine induc-ers. Three new diselenide compounds, bis-(2-hydroxyphenyl) diselenide, bis-(3-hydroxyphe-nyl) diselenide and bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl) diselenide were designed and synthesized as anti-inflammatory agent. All of them were found to have strong in vitro activity in anti-inflammatory assays.

  • Lonicera japonica is widely distributed in Southeast Asia and has been traditionally used as an anti - inflammatory, diuretic, abscessic, antipyretic, and antidotic agent. Lonicera japonica was investigated for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects using several in vivo models. SKLJI was purified for i.v. injection from Lonicera japonica as a potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic fraction, after activity-guided fractionation study. (omitted)

  • In the present study Momordica dioica fruit pulp was successively extracted with hexane and methanol. To the concentrated methanolic extract ethyl acetate was added and ethyl acetate soluble portion was separated. Both hexane extract (HE) and ethyl acetate soluble portion (EASP) of methanolic extract was vacuum dried to yield the respective HE and EASP. HE and EASP were evaluated for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities in a dose of 50 and 100 mg/kg in mice and rats. Both HE and EASP significant exhibited analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities when compare to standard drug.

  • In the present investigation, the anti-inflammatory activity of glycyrrhetic acid derivatives (abbreviated as AMKOA, 28-OMKOA, 30-OMKOA) was compared with hydrocortisone and sodium salicylate by a new anti-inflammatory test, utilizing the chorio-allantoic membrane of the chick embryo, which is outstandingly suitable for large scale screening of new compounds. The anti-inflammatory activity of the glycyrrhetic acid derivatives was similar to hydrocortisone and superior to sodium salicylate.

  • It was reported that the potency of TMMC derivatives was related to the presence of the 2'-hydroxy group on the A ring. Also, 4-dimethylamino group on the B ring lowered the anti-inflammatory potency of the chalcones. We synthesized various derivatives of 2'-hydroxy chalcones having other substituents on B ring. The synthetic derivatives showed the more potent anti-inflammatory effect, comparable to that of the TMMC derivatives reported previously.
