  • It has been observed that coated steel structures deteriorate more rapidly than the designed lifetime due to acid rain caused by air pollution, etc. Therefore, improving the corrosion resistance of anti-corrosive paint is very important in terms of safety and the economic point of view. In this study, the corrosion resistance of five kinds of anti-corrosive paints, including the Acryl, Fluorine, and Epoxy resin series, were investigated with electrochemical methods, such as corrosion potential measurements, polarization curves, diffusion limiting current density, etc. As a result, the corrosion resistance of the F101 specimen with the fluorine resin series was found to be superior to the other specimens, while E100 with the epoxy resin series also showed a somewhat good corrosion resistance. Furthermore, it was observed that the amount of water and oxygen entering the inner side of a painted film increased with an increase in immersion time, irrespective of the kind of resin series. However, the oxygen diffusion limiting current density of a specimen with good corrosion resistance was relatively decreased compared to other specimens, because of the difficulty of oxygen diffusion penetrating to the inner side of the film. Consequently it is suggested that we can qualitatively evaluate the corrosion resistance of an anti-corrosive paint by measuring the diffusion limiting current density as an electrochemical method.

  • This study is intended to develop the self water proof admixture for durability concrete by anti-corrosion inhibitor. Chloride induced corrosion of reinforcement is one of the main factor which cause the deterioration of concrete structure. When the substitute anti-corrosion agents for a part of self waterproofing agent, the corrosion-proof increases for the increased water proofing capacity. And proper self waterproofing agent by cement weight in concrete was generally positive effect to concrete compressive strength, slump, freezing and thawing resistance. Also, permeability and absorption show a straight decrease when self waterproofing agent is added.

  • The study was carried out to evaluate material characteristics and environmental effects of anti-corrosion inhibitor which is known to be very easy to use, since the admixture is added during concrete mixing. Specimens were fabricate with 6 different dosages of anti-corrosion inhibitor and cured in the autoclave chamber with different number of cycles. As a result of measuring corrosion of reinforcing bars embedded in concrete, it was found that even small amount of admixture application can prevent reinforcing bars from corrosion and the efficiency is gradually decreased with increase of the number of autoclave cycles and of percentage of chloride content. In addition, the admixture will not affect material characteristics such as compressive strength and air content.

  • To solve the corrosion problem of industrial equipment and other constructions containing metals, corrosion protection can be performed by using coating which provides a barrier between the metal and its environment. Coatings play a significant role in protecting irons and steels in harsh marine and acid environments. This study was conducted to identify an anti-corrosive epoxy coating for carbon steel composite with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% concentrations of nanoparticles of SiO2 using the dip-coating method. The electrochemical behavior was analyzed with open circuit potential (OCP) technics and polarization curves (Tafle) in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 5 vol% H2SO4 media. The structure, composition, and morphology were characterized using different analytical techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that epoxynano SiO2 coating demonstrated a lower corrosion rate of 2.51 × 10-4 mm/year and the efficiency of corrosion protection was as high as 99.77%. The electrochemical measurement showed that the nano-SiO2 / epoxy coating enhanced the anti-corrosive performance in both NaCl and H2SO4 media.

  • Recently, large scale concrete structures exposed to severe environments are increasingly built in various locations, The corrosion may severely affect the durability and service life of such a concrete structure. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a method to enhance the corrosion resistance of a concrete, The purpose of this paper is, therefore, to investigate the corrosion resistance and bond strength characteristics of anti-corrosive cement coated reinforcements. To this end, a comprehensive experimental study has been done to explore the corrosion and bond behavior of those coated reinforcements. The test results indicate that the anti-corrosive cement coated reinforcements do not exhibit any corrosion after corrosion tests and the bond strengths are very good as much as plain bar. It is seen that the anti-corrosive cement coated reinforcements can be efficiently used to enhance the durability of reinforced concrete structures.

  • Recently, household electronic industries require environmentally-friendly and highly functional steels in order to enhance the quality of human life. Customers especially require both excellent corrosion and abrasion resistant anti-fingerprint steels for digital TV panels. Thus POSCO has developed new functional electro-galvanized steels, which have double coated layers with organic-inorganic composites on the zinc surface of the steel for usage as the bottom chassis panel of TVs. The inorganic solution for the bottom layer consists of inorganic phosphate, magnesium, and zirconium compounds with a small amount of epoxy binder, and affords both improved adhesion properties by chemical conversion reactions and corrosion resistance due to a self-healing effect. The composite solution for the top layer was prepared by fine dispersion of organic-inorganic ingredients that consist of a urethane modified polyacrylate polymer, hardener, silica sol and a titanium complex inhibitor in aqueous media. Both composite solutions were coated on the steel surface by using a roll coater and then cured through an induction furnace in the electro-galvanizing line. New anti-fingerprint steel was evaluated for quality performance through such procedures as the salt spray test for corrosion resistance, tribological test for abrasion resistance, and conductivity test for surface electric conductance regarding to both types of polymer resin and coating weight of composite solution. New composite coated anti-fingerprint steels afford both better corrosion resistance and abrasion properties compared to conventional anti-fingerprint steel that mainly consists of acrylate polymers. Detailed discussions of both composite solutions and experimental results suggest that urethane modifications of acrylate polymers of composite solutions play a key role in enhanced quality performances.

  • To improve properties of wear resistance and anti-corrosion of the trivalent chromium platings, oxinitrocarbunsing and steam oxidation were conducted. Armophous trivalent Cr platings could be transformed to chromium carbides of high hardness, that showed low friction and wear rate. Even though micro-cracks were within as platings, superior anti-corrosion property was obtained by these treatments due to healing of cracks at the interface between the trivalent chromium platings and substrate.

  • 440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content(~0.5%) and addition of small amount of nickel, vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and tempering temperatures on the uniform corrosion in the solution of lN H2S04 were investigated through the electrochemical polarization test. When tempering temperature is constant, corrosion current density in active-passive transition point, Icorr, decreased a little with an increase of austenitizing temperature. In addition to this, when austenitizing temperature is constant, longer holding time showed a little lower Icorr and Ipass, passive current density. And when austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ and tempered in a range of $350{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, best anti-corrosion properties were obtained at $350^{\circ}C$ tempering temperature while worst at $450^{\circ}C$ or $550^{\circ}C$. The specimens tempered at below $450^{\circ}C$ and above $550^{\circ}C$, similar and good anti-corrosion characteristics were obtained regardless of alloying elements added, showing anti-corrosion characteristics are influenced more by tempering temperature than by alloying elements.
