Triaxial tests are essential to estimate the shear strength properties of the soil or rock. Normally triaxial tests are carried out on samples of 38 mm diameter and 76 mm height. Granular materials, predominantly used in base/sub-base construction of pavements or in railways have size range of 60-75 mm. Determination of shear strength parameters of those materials can be made possible only through triaxial tests on large diameter samples. This paper describes a large diameter cyclic triaxial testing facility set up in the Geotechnical Engineering lab of Indian Institute of Science. This setup consists of 100 kN capacity dynamic loading frame, which facilitates testing of samples of up to 300 mm diameter and 600 mm height. The loading ram can be actuated up to a maximum frequency of 10 Hz, with maximum amplitude of 100 mm. The setup is capable of carrying out static as well as dynamic triaxial tests under isotropic, anisotropic conditions with a maximum confining pressure of 1 MPa. Working with this setup is a difficult task because of the size of the sample. In this paper, a detailed discussion on the various problems encountered during the initial testing using the equipment, the ideas and solutions adopted to solve them are presented. Pilot experiments on granular sub-base material of 53 mm down size are also presented.

A user friendly computer code(EMCOMST; Electro-Magnetic response for COMposite STructures) was developed which provides with computations of the response characteristics such as reflectance and transmittance to the incident wave angles, frequencies, composite thicknesses, ply orientations, and types of backplate as the linearly polarized transverse electro-magnetic wave is emitted to the advanced composite structures. In this investigation were reviewed the electromagnetic characteristics of the continuous orthotropic fiber-reinforced organic matrix composites with or without ferrite fillers, which are actively applied to low-weight and high-strength aircraft structures. Also were calculated the response of the three layered compound structures which have appropriately stacked above-mentioned materials as transmitting layer, absorbing layer, reflection layer, respectively under the specific thickness constraints for mechanical strength design requirements. For the composite structures presented in this study, minimum reflectance value less than -5㏈ can be obtained in the frequency range of 4 to 12 ㎓. In addition, analysis of structures attached isotropic radar absorbing materials(RAM) is facilitated by putting the material properties in the material input card entries adequately.
High-frequency (126-㎑) bottom backscattering measurements with various bottom types were conducted at the water tank in Ocean Acoustic Laboratory, Hanyang University. For the purpose of investigating the energy distribution of bottom scattering with various bottom types, the sediment was varied with gravel, sand, sandy mud and mixed bottoms. To examine the anisotropic nature of the scattering due to the orientations of bottom ripple, the footprints were made transverse and longitudinal to the direction of incident wave. The total scattering characteristics are that the larger grazing angles the larger backscattering strengths become and backscattering strengths for a transverse ripple case are higher than those of longitudinal ripple case. finally, the variations of scattering strength depend mainly on the ripple's orientation.

The three-dimensional strength behavior of compacted decomposed granite soil was studied using cubical triaxial tests with independent control of the three principal stresses. All specimens were loaded under conditions of principal stress direction fixed and aligned with the directions of compacted plane. For comparable test conditions, the major principal strain and volume strain to failure were smallest when the major principal stress acted perpendicular to the compacted plane. The opposite extremes were obtained when the major principal stress acted parallel to the compacted plane. In cubical triaxial tests with same b values and with ${\theta}$ values in one of three sectors of the octahedral plane, independent of the range of ${\theta}$, higher friction angles are obtained in tests with b greater than in triaxial compression tests in which b 0.0, Comparison between the results of the drained cubical triaxial tests on lksan compacted decomposed granite soil and the cross section of the Mohr-Coulomb failure surface as well as the cross section of the Mohr-Coulomb failure surface were made. Lade's isotropic failure criterion based on vertical specimens overestimates the strengths for tests performed with values of 0 between 90˚ and 1 50˚ the Mohr-Coulomb criterion generally underestimates the strengths of tests performed with values of ${\theta}$ between $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ except around the $120^{\circ}$.

Pt thin films on Cr or Ti interlayer were deposited onto a tungsten carbide(WC) substrate by the ion beam assisted DC magnetron sputtering. The various atomic percent of Cr and Ti underneath of the Pt films were prepared to examine the total thin film characteristics. The microstructure and surface analysis of the specimen were conducted by using the SEM, XRD and AFM. Mechanical properties such as hardness and adhesion strength of Pt thin film also were examined. The interlayer of pure Ti was formed with 40 nm thickness while that of pure Cr was done with 50 nm as standard reference. The growth rate of either Cr or Ti thin film was almost same under the same deposition conditions. The SEM images showed that anisotropic grain of Pt thin films consisting of dense columnar structures irrespectively grew from the different target compositions. The values of hardness and adhesion strength of Cr/Pt thin film coated on a WC substrate were higher than those of Ti/Pt thin film.
Unidirectional polymer composites were prepared using high-strength carbon fibers as reinforcement and phenolic resin as matrix precursor with keeping fiber volume fraction at 30, 40, 50 and 60% respectively. These composites were carbonized at $1000^{\circ}C$ and graphitised at $2600^{\circ}C$ in the inert atmosphere. The carbonized and graphitised composites were characterized for mechanical properties as well as microstructure. Microscopic studies were carried out of the polished surface of carbonized and graphitised composites after etching by chromic acid, to understand the effect of fiber volume fraction on oxidation at fiber-matrix interface. It is found that the flexural strength in polymer composites increases with fiber volume fraction and so does for the carbonised composites. However, the trend was found to be reversed in graphitised composites. In all the carbonized composites anisotropic region has been observed at fiber-matrix interface which transforms into columnar type microstructure upon graphitisation. The extension of strong and weak columnar type microstructure is function of fiber volume fraction. SEM microscopy of the etched surface of the sample reveal that composites containing 40% fiber volume has minimum oxidation at the interface, revealing a strong interfacial bonding.
This research presents the effect of anisotropy of the hollow disc mode under Brazilian test using PFC3D. The Brazilian tensile strength test was performed on the hollow disc specimens containing the bedding layers and then these specimens were numerically modeled by using the two dimensional discrete element code (PFC3D) to calibrate this computer code for the simulation of the cracks propagation and cracks coalescence in the anisotropic bedded rocks. The thickness of each layer within the specimens varied as 5 mm, 10 mm and 20 mm and the layers angles were changed as $0^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $50^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$. The diameter of internal hole was taken as 15 mm and the loading rate during the testing process kept as 0.016 mm/s. It has been shown that for layers angles below $25^{\circ}$ the tensile cracks produce in between the layers and extend toward the model boundary till interact and break the specimen. The failure process of the specimen may enhance as the layer angle increases so that the Brazilian tensile strength reaches to its minimum value when the bedding layers is between $50^{\circ}$ and $75^{\circ}$ but its value reaches to maximum at a layer angle of $90^{\circ}$. The number of tensile cracks decreases as the layers thickness increases and with increasing the layers angle, less layer mobilize in the failure process.

Mechanical properties, including Young's modulus, residual stress and rupture strength, of a thermally evaporated gold film have been measured form a blister test. In a theoretical study, the priniple of minimum potential energy and that of virtual work have been applied to the pressurized circular membrane problem, and load-deflection relations have been derived for typical membrane deflection mode of spheroidal shape. In an experimental study, circular gold membranes of 4800 A-thickness and 3.5mm diameter were fabricated by the silicon electropolishing technique. Mecahnical properties of the thin gold films were deduced from the load-deflection curves obtained by the blister test, Young's moduli, obtianed from blister test, have been in the range of 45-70 GPa, while those of bulk gold have been in the range of 78-80 GPa. Residual stresses in the evaporated gold films have been measured as 28-110MPa in tension, The rupture strength of the gold film has turned out to be almost equal to that of dental gold alloy (310-380MPa). It has been demonstrated that the present specimen fabrication method and blister test apparatus have been effective for simultaneous measurement of Young's modulus, residual stress and repture strength of thin solid films. Especially, the electropolishing technique employed here has provided a simple and practical way to fabricate thin membranes in a circular or an arbitrary shape, which could not be obtained by the conventional anisotropic silicon mecromachining technique.
In-situ soil is anisotropically consolidated at rest, and the coefficient of earth pressure at rest $K_0$ is dependent on the properties of soil and stress history. In order to estimate roughly the in-situ undrained shear strength of a $K_0$-anisotropically normally consolidated clay from isotropic consolidated undrained test, consolidated undrained shear testy with four different consolidation pressure ratios ($K={\sigma}'_{3c}/{\sigma}'_{1c}$) were performed and test results showed K-$\alpha$ relationship, representing the strength ratio $\alpha$ as ($S_u/{\sigma}'_{1c})_{CKU}=\alpha(S_u/{\sigma}'_{1c})_{CIU}$. Strength ratio u increases with increasing consolidation pressure ratio. And the angle of internal friction $\Phi'$and angle ratio $\Phi'_{CKU}/\Phi'_{CIU}/$ are increased with the increament of K-value.

We report an experimental evidence of coexistence of the strong and weak exchange couplings in unidirectional NiO/NiFe (antiferromagneticlferromagnetic) bilayer thin films. The exchange bias was measured by VSM and AMR techniques and then, analyzed into the strong and weak exchange couplings by means of a regression method. In NiO(60nm)/NiFe(10nm) film, the ratio of the weak exchange coupling field over the average exchange coupling field was found to be almost unchanged within it range from 0.2 to 0.4 irrespective to the strength of an applied field. However, the ratio increased among the samples with decreasing the average exchange coupling field due to the increment of the weak exchange coupling area.
