  • Game and Animation are considered as two different fields. The definition of animation is 'moving picture' and game is a kind of animation which can be controlled by users. Actually, many principles of animation are applied to the production of games, and are even more emphasized in the mobile game contents which are becoming popular these days because of the characteristics of mobile devices such as small screen size. In this paper, we study on the application of the 12 principles of animation through the making of a mobile 3D game called 'Fly to the music' and that game is going to be serviced in late 2006 by SK Telecom. Moreover, we studied the differences between 3d mobile game animation and ordinary animation.

Equivalence Principles Based Skin Deformation of Character Animation

  • Based on the equivalence principles of physical properties, geometric properties and externally applied forces between a surface and the corresponding curves, we present a fast physics and example based skin deformation method for character animation in this paper. The main idea is to represent the skin surface and its deformations with a group of curves whose computation incurs much less computing overheads than the direct surface-based approach. The geometric and physical properties together with externally applied forces of the curves are determined from those of the surface defined by these curves according to the equivalence principles between the surface and the curves. This ensures the curve-based approach is equivalent to the original problem. A fourth order ordinary differential equation is introduced to describe the deformations of the curves between two example skin shapes which relates geometric and physical properties and externally applied forces to shape changes of the curves. The skin deformation is determined from these deformed curves. Several examples are given in this paper to demonstrate the application of the method.

  • The Cultural Revolution in the history of Chinese animation hinder the development of the initial animation, and after a negative assessment instrument provided the cause is to become sluggish growth of the Chinese animation. So this time animation are things that are the subject of academic research studies or analysis has been depreciating almost uniformly without evaluation. However, of all the cultural and artistic creation it is developing in its own specific historical conditions and has the aesthetic results. This paper puts the primary purpose is to hold in consideration the aesthetic principles that led to cultural and artistic creativity and objective perspective the achievements the Chinese animation of the time period of the Cultural Revolution. Cultural Revolution is avoided to the previous period in accordance with the socialist ideology of Mao Ze-dong(毛澤東) sikindaneun highlight the culture of the proletariat and placed our goal to create a new class culture. Therefore, cultural and artistic creation of this period is often inconsistent with this part of our aesthetic principles generally accepted character has a non- elitist and anti properties.   • The limited animation method which is a Japanese Animation frame production method was born in the U.S. but it is Japan where it was most actively used and developed. With this in mind, this researcher conducted a comparative study on the movements shown in animated films of the U.S. and Japan to identify success factors. For an analysis of the animated films of the two countries, first, the difference between orthodox animation and experimental animation was analyzed. Second, the concept of limited animation was reviewed, as well as its difference from full animation. Lastly, for an analysis of the difference between animations of the U.S. and Japan, 'Disney's 12 principles of animation' was applied.

The Effects of Anticipation in WALL·E (2008) (영화 WALL·E의 선행 움직임(Anticipation) 효과 연구)

  • This paper aims to investigate the effect of anticipatory motion in Wall E (2008). For the purpose of the study, first of all, an overall discussion on the definition and role of anticipation presented through the related literature review. Based on this, the present study analyzed the functions of anticipatory movements of the main characters, Wall E and EVE in 29 scenes. As a result, this paper found that anticipation is involved in expressions of humanity, thought process, utterance and intonation, the degree of emotion and energy, reinforcement of the character's intention, and biological response within the film. Overall, these findings show that anticipation takes an important part in giving the illusion of life to the characters throughout the movie, which may imply that anticipation can be beneficial for characters with abstract form or limited modality. The ultimate goal of this study is to propose that the animation principles can be used as a tool to analyze character animation and can be applied academically or industrially to other fields such as artificial intelligence.

  • Consciously or not, producers have to make many aesthetic choices in creative process of video production. If there are general acceptable aesthetic principles to make right choice it would be guideline of aesthetic decision to somewhat reduce mistakes and errors in the process. This paper proposes a theoretical approach on establishing the media aesthetic principle of 3D animation camera working, which is the most suitable for animation production context. We describe the Herbert Zettl's applied media aesthetics related directly to the camera, which is about the two-Dimensional field focusing on aspect radio and forces within the screen, three-dimensional field focusing on depth, volume, and four-dimensional field focusing on time and motion. In order to have theoretical approach we made an analysis on comparing a camera working of movie with 3D computer animation's one, and reconstructed these basic principles to be suited for the 3D animation production. When applied media aesthetics of the traditional camera working are applied to the 3D animation production, it could be an efficient guideline for it. Futhermore, if we develop the research for the relationship with various visual languages with the basis of these principles, the theory of creative picture composition method for the 3D animation production will be logically and systematically established.

  • This study is the process of performing the interdisciplinary fusion study between multiple fields by identifying the status on the previous artistic education considering the brain scientific mechanism of image creativity and brain-based learning principles. In recent years, producing the educational methods of each field as the fusion study activities are emerging as the trend and thanks to such, the results of brain-based educational fusion studies are being presented for each field. It includes artistic fields such as music, art and dance. In other words, the perspective is that by understanding the operating principles of the brain while creativity and learning is taking place, when applying various principles that can develop the corresponding functions as a teaching method, it can effectively increase the artistic performance ability and creativity. Since the animation drawing should be able to intuitively recognize the elements of movement and produce the communication with the target beyond the delineative perspective of simply drawing the objects to look the same, it requires the development of systematic educational method including the methods of communication, elements of higher cognitive senses as well as the cognitive perspective of form implementation. Therefore, this study proposes a literature study results on the artistic education applied with brain-based principles in order to design the educational model considering the professional characteristics of animation drawing. Therefore, the overseas and domestic trends of the cases of brain-based artistic education were extracted and analyzed. In addition, the cases of artistic education studies applied with brain-based principles and study results from cases of drawing related education were analyzed. According to the analyzed results, the brain-based learning related to the drawing has shown a common effect of promoting the creativity and changes of positive emotion related to the observation, concentration and image expression through the training of the right brain. In addition, there was a case of overseas educational application through the brain wave training where the timing ability and artistic expression have shown an enhancement effect through the HRV training, SMR, Beta 1 and neuro feedback training that strengthens the alpha/seta wave and it was proposing that slow brain wave neuro feedback training contributes significantly in overcoming the stress and enhancing the creative artistic performance ability. The meaning of this study result is significant in the fact that it was the case that have shown the successful application of neuro feedback training in the environment of artistic live education beyond the range of laboratory but the use of the machine was shown to have limitations for being applied to the teaching methods so its significance can be found in providing the analytical foundation for applying and designing the brain-based learning principles for future animation drawing teaching methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose divergence from standardization of animation acting through working on investigating gestures comprising most principal exaggeration acting elements in animation acting. For this purpose, this study utilizes animation 12 principles and Laban's effort theory. This study respectively analyzes 2D and 3D animation gesture expressions that are standards for comedy silent film and derive commonness and difference from them. In the next, this study explores the possibility of how animation can utilize acting of comedy silent film. Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton used to be important elements referring to early animation acting, but as the recent animation technology gets advanced, they are not treated significantly any more. However, as 3D animation turns out to be chief concerns and the roles that acting, dynamics and performance play become gradually important, the necessity is on the rise that Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton's gesture performances should more prudently be reinterpreted.

A Study on Development of a Curriculum for Teachers in Culture & Art Education: Focused on Cartoon & Animation Courses (문화예술교육을 위한 교사차원 교육과정 개발과정 연구 -만화 애니메이션 과목을 중심으로)

  • The ability to develop curriculums is a crucial factor in evaluating the expertise of a teacher who teaches culture & art education. Establishing a one-year plan for classes is an effort to create a well-designed curriculum for the year and also to foresee the big picture of classes in the corresponding year. A curriculum should not be composed of merely educational content or a series of knowledge and skills. It should be well-designed, based on principles of a coherent plan. This study examines organizational principles on which common curriculums are based on and looks at how a curriculum can be designed, especially for cartoon & animation classes, as part of Culture & Art education, and which factors should be considered in planning. In the process of forming such a curriculum, these steps should be followed: considering educational standards for cartoon animation classes; determining the learning experience, organizing the learning experience; and, lastly, evaluating the level of learning. In addition, effective teaching strategies that reflect the characteristics of a class on cartoon animation should be formulated. This study suggests actual examples of an effective annual curriculum for cartoon animation classes based on all the factors presented above.
