  • In this paper, we studied the rotation angle estimation methods required for image alignment in an image recognition environment. In particular, a rotation angle estimation method applicable to a low specification embedded-based environment was proposed and compared with the existing method using complex moment. The proposed method estimates the rotation angle through similarity mathcing of the 1D projection profile along the radial axis after converting an image into polar coordinates. In addition, it is also possible to select a method of using vector sum of the projection profile, which more simplifies the calculation. Through experiments conducted on binary pattern images and gray-scale images, it was shown that the estimation error of the proposed method is not significantly different from that of complex moment-based method and requires less computation and system resources. For future expansion, a study on how to match the rotation center in gray-scale images will be needed.

  • A single snapshot data can only provide limited amount of information so that the rank of covariance matrix is not full, which is not adopted to complete the parameter estimation directly using the traditional super-resolution method. Aiming at solving the problem, a joint time delay and angle estimation using matrix pencil method based on information reconstruction vector for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal is proposed. Firstly, according to the channel frequency response vector of each array element, the algorithm reconstructs the vector data with delay and angle parameter information from both frequency and space dimensions. Then the enhanced data matrix for the extended array element is constructed, and the parameter vector of time delay and angle is estimated by the two-dimensional matrix pencil (2D MP) algorithm. Finally, the joint estimation of two-dimensional parameters is accomplished by the parameter pairing. The algorithm does not need a pseudo-spectral peak search, and the location of the target can be determined only by a single receiver, which can reduce the overhead of the positioning system. The theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the estimation accuracy of the proposed method in a single snapshot and low signal-to-noise ratio environment is much higher than that of Root Multiple Signal Classification algorithm (Root-MUSIC), and this method also achieves the higher estimation performance and efficiency with lower complexity cost compared to the one-dimensional matrix pencil algorithm.

  • Frequency is an important operating parameter of a power system. It is essential that the frequency of a power system be maintained very close to its nominal frequency. And frequency measurement devices have need to measure a fast and accurate of frequency using voltage signals. This paper proposes a comparative study of frequency estimation techniques using the high speed FIR filter based algorithm, the DFT filter based algorithm using phasor angle between two phasors, and positive sequence component based algorithm using the half angle between two successive positions of phasor. The discussed three techniques have been formed through numerical manipulation of a discrete system. The proposed techniques have been tested using signals obtained from selected power system model using ATP simulation package. Some test results are shown in this paper.

  • If the angle of arrival (AOA) of a source is perturbed due to some reasons in a statistical way as in the environment of wireless mobile communications, a new model appropriate for such environment should be used instead of the point source model. In this paper, an angel-perturbed source model is proposed and an estimation method based on the eigen-decomposition tecklique is investigated under the model. The asymptotic distribution of the estimation errors is obtained to observe the statistical properties.

  • The enhanced phase angle estimation algorithm is essential to supply the power stably under synchronizing with grid source. In this paper, we are proposed the novel phase angle estimation algorithm and verified the validity of proposed method as simulation with PSIM and experiments. We sort the harmonics element using high-pass filter(HPF) that have the cut-off frequency below basic element and make reverse d-q transformation. So, it can be restored the harmonics element at stationary axis, and we can get the fundamental voltage element of AC grid. Proposed PLL method have a rapid responsibility and a large margin at controller design than conventional method because it have a small phase delay and a sufficient controller gain margin. And, it can reduce the error of voltage rms value and axis transformation according to robust PLL algorithm against the harmonic and phase unbalance.

  • Model-based, data-driven and physics-based approaches represent the state-of-the-art techniques to estimate the aircraft flow angles, angle-of-attack and angle-of-sideslip, in avionics. Thanks to sensor fusion techniques, a synthetic sensor is able to provide estimation of flow angles without any dedicated physical sensors. The work deals with a physics-based scheme derived from flight mechanic theory that leads to a nonlinear flow angle model. Even though several solvers can be adopted, nonlinear models can be replaced with less accurate but straightforward ones in practical applications. The present work proposes a linearisation to obtain the flow angles' closed form solution that is verified using a flight simulator. The main objective of the paper, in fact, is to analyse the estimation degradation using the proposed closed form solutions with respect to the nonlinear scheme. Moreover, flight conditions, where the proposed closed form solutions are not applicable, are identified.

  • This paper examines methods to estimate torque and angle in shoulder flexion from surface electromyography(sEMG) signals for intuitive and delicate control of robotic assistance device. Five muscles on the upper arm, three for shoulder flexion and two for shoulder extension, were used to offer favorable sEMG recording conditions in the estimation. The methods tested were the mean absolute value (MAV) with linear regression and the artificial neural network (ANN) method. An optimal condition was sought by varying combination of muscles used and the parameters in each method. The estimation performance was evaluated using the correlation values and normalized root mean square error values. In addition, we discussed their possible use as an estimation of motion intent of a user or as a command input in a physical human-machine interaction system.

  • The signal model and weighted-average based estimation techniques are proposed to estimate the angle-of-arrival (AOA) parameters of multiple clusters for a low data rate ultrawide band (LR-UWB) based wireless positioning system. It is observed that the weighted-average based AOA estimation technique gives an optimal AOA estimate under few clusters condition, and the average based AOA estimation technique gives a correct AOA estimate under many clusters condition through computer simulation. Also, we can observe that the variance estimation error decreases as SNR increases, and the proposed techniques are superior to the conventional technique from the viewpoint of performance.

  • This paper presents an adaptive observer-based approach to estimate voltage parameters, including frequency, amplitude, and phase angle, for single-phase power systems. In contrast to most existing estimation methods of grid voltage parameters, in this study, grid voltage is treated as a dynamic system related to an unknown grid frequency. Based on adaptive observer theory, a full-order adaptive observer is proposed to estimate voltage parameters. A Lyapunov function-based argument is employed to ensure that the proposed estimation method of voltage parameters has zero steady-state error, even when frequency varies or phase angle jumps significantly. Meanwhile, a reduced-order adaptive observer is designed as the simplified version of the proposed full-order observer. Compared with the frequency-adaptive virtual flux estimation, the proposed adaptive observers exhibit better dynamic response to track the actual grid voltage frequency, amplitude, and phase angle. Simulations and experiments have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed observers.
